Dan Wilson has one of the most unique careers of anyone in the music business. Instead of fizzling out, he just gets better with age. One listen to his new solo album and you can hear why he has been a successful songwriter for other artists. But, for some reason, this really hasn't translated to his own material with the exception of Semisonic's "Closing Time" back in 1998.

Mr. Wilson has been in several bands, and has written several hit songs for other artists over the years, and this is his second solo album, his first in seven years. "Love Without Fear" is the perfect album that no one will hear. Such great turns as "Love Without Fear", "A Song Can Be About Anything", "However Long", "When It Pleases You", "We Belong Together", "I Can Never Stay Mad At You" and "Even The Stars Are Sleeping" all have an honest truthfulness about them. When Mr. Wilson writes and sings about relationships, that's when he is in his element.

"Love Without Fear" contains the type of mature, self-assured music that is meaningful without being bombastic. Mr. Wilson takes an organic approach rather than a high tech one, and it pays off. It's also not boring or dull, which is a pitfall for most artists attempting to make an album like this one. There's enough tempo changes, and musical variety to carry you through the entire 45 minutes--and yes, Mr. Wilson understands less is more here. He gets in and gets out in a timely manner.

As I said earlier, Mr. Wilson keeps getting better with age. It's arguable that his two solo albums are his greatest works in a long and varied career. Here's to hoping it's not another seven years before another solo album. Heck, I'd even take a reunited Semisonic putting out a new album.

Here's how "Love Without Fear" compares to Dan Wilson's previous works:

1986 Applehead Man (Trip Shakespeare): One Star
1988 Are You Shakespearienced? (Trip Shakespeare): Two Stars
1990 Across The Universe (Trip Shakespeare): Three and a Half Stars
1991 Lulu (Trip Shakespeare): Three Stars
1996 Great Divide (Semisonic): Three and a Half Stars
1998 Feeling Strangely Fine (Semisonic): Four Stars
2001 All About Chemistry (Semisonic): Four Stars
2007 Free Life (Dan Wilson): Four Stars
2014 Love Without Fear (Dan Wilson): Four Stars

I just purchased Love Without Fear by Dan Wilson in CD Format, to add to my computer stored Library of music. Dan Wilson was a co-contributor to another CD I listened to and the title track, "Love without fear" features harmony vocals from Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, after Dan corroborated with her in her own music endeavors. This cut is just one of the many nice songs on this CD. Dan Wilson is his own musician and writer, he is not a super-star and his is not a much known name, but this music appeals to me, mostly for the songwriting, but his delivery is sound and enjoyable. If you like a good song, pleasant and endearing voices singing and playing ones' own compositions, I will predict you will like Dan Wilson's music. He combines it with some nice help from Maines, Aaron Redfield on drums and percussion, Sean Watkins playing guitar, Brad Gordon is on the Synths and Organ, Zac Rae also on Organ, John Munson n the upright Bass, Joey Waronker doing drums, Eric Robinson plays Accordian, Craig Wrighton Synth, Sean Watkins on acoustic guitar, Oliver Kraus plays Cello and Strings, Mai Bloomfield plays cello, Blake Mills on Slide, Ken Chastain on Percussion and some vocal help from Missy Higgins on a Dual Vocal of "Even the stars are Sleeping", which is a good sound on this album. Dan Wilson and friends, here, provide some nice songs well performed and just a really nice sound, which brings to mind 70's era flannel shirted troubadours around our country. I won't over do the stamped out accolades to this music and the guy staring out from the CD album cover, but I like it and if you like a vocal, pickin' and smilin' kinda guy offering from some really good writer and his helping hands, this is it. I have listened to it now quite a few times, and in about a dozen listening's, I won't downgrade this review. In fact I upgraded it to 5 stars, because I've come to really appreciate it. I usually do that with most of the music I start out liking right out of the cover. I'd kinda like to know him one day. Surely as his picture on the cover of this CD is real, how could you not? He is quite good.

I was absolutely blown away by this album. Everything about it is perfect. Wilson's voice is excellent, his phrasing is precise, his lyrics are complex, literate and clever, his melodies are beautiful, the harmony vocals are gorgeous. Best of all, all of the songs on the album are connected to one another thematically while being quite different from one another musically. I have only one complaint, which is that I've listened to the album so many times over the past two weeks that I can't the two best songs, Disappearing and Two, out of my head.

Dan Wilson, the former lead singer of Semisonic, is simply an excellent songwriter. His music is warm and melodic, and his lyrics are moving and catchy. He's a no-frills kind of musician, who happens to have won a Grammy.

Honest music that speaks to the heart. Not the standard BS most "musicians" are turning out these days.
