Présentation de l'éditeur
Gigi, a fun-loving Jewish girl about to marry a Louisiana Cajun soldier at the end of World War II, reminisces about the war years and her family’s struggle to survive them. Gigi’s impeccable world of loving family, friends, and her plans to attend art school is shattered as the German army approaches Paris. Along with millions of other refugees, the family takes the decision to flee the advancing Nazis. Marked as rich Parisian Jews, her family is subject to people’s scorn while the French Republic crumbles around them. During the next four years, they will endure isolation, starvation, deportations of family and friends, and the horrors of the gestapo. Despite living through the grim realities of war, Gigi emerges from girlhood adolescence to become a beautiful young woman with a monumental sense of humor and lightness of being. Sometimes comic, sometimes tragic,"Mademoiselle Gigi" is an emotional roller-coaster that takes the reader on a page-turning journey from pure joy and laughter to despair and tears. Gigi’s indomitable spirit will inspire and capture your heart. Dennis Ward’s debut novel is based on the true life events of Gisele “Gigi” Carriton. The sequel, "Chez Gigi," will be ready for publication in 2014. Biographie de l'auteur
After many years of varied careers from respiratory therapist, computer systems engineer, and art gallery owner, I sometimes felt my working life was an “all you can eat buffet.” One day I was honest enough to accept I was more in tune with the artist’s way of life than the world of bits and bytes geekdom. A decision I never regret. During my journey as an author, some people have said my writing is a gift to humanity. I’ve told them so are adult Depends. Truly, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to write novels, stage plays, short stories, personal essays, and poems at an age when I have more hair growing out of my ears than on my head. I wish I would have jumped on the literary merry-go-round years ago; however, I think I needed many years to accumulate the wisdom, humor, and insight to be able to find my writer’s voice. My authorial journey continues into the coming year with some exciting events. Currently, I am publishing my debut novel, Mademoiselle Gigi, and writing the sequel, Chez Gigi. If that wasn’t enough, I am attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, seeking a degree in Creative Writing and editing for The Southwestern Review. Since 2006, I have written numerous short stories, personal essays, and two full length plays, which have been produced at the Cité des Arts in Lafayette, Louisiana. My play Chez Gisèle won as a finalist in the 2011 New Orleans Saints and Sinners Theater Festival full and will open the inaugural Acadiana Pride Festival for a three week run in March-April 2014. My personal essay Higgins Lake and Planet Claire have been recently published by Grey Wolfe Publishing in an anthology collection titled Summer Legends. Also, Desperate Living, an excerpt from Mademoiselle Gigi will be published by Grey Wolfe in Autumn Legends. To best relate my feelings about writing, I quote Somerset Maugham, “If you can tell stories, create characters, devise incidents, and have sincerity and passion, it doesn’t matter a damn how you write.”

Great Read Until...
le 6 juin 2014 - Publié sur Amazon.com
This is a wonderful book. It kept me turning pages right up until the last page hoping it would never end. After such a gripping tale that held me in suspense, I found the ending to be a let down. I am sure the author and perhaps some of the readers will say, just wait until the next book. It is a series. I understand that Gigi had come to a fork in the road and made a choice, but I found the ending almost soap operaish (if that is a word?) I think that Gerald's character should have been a little bit better developed within the context of the story and leading up to the wedding. Yes, I got that he was going to be a potential jerk, but felt that the lack of character development contributed to the weakness of the ending. It might have better benefitted the cohesiveness of the story had volume 1 and the promised volume 2 been combined into one novel, telling the full story without the seemingly awkward drop off at the end of volume 1.
All that being said, I still felt it deserved four stars!

Mademoiselle Gigi - Strength and Compassion through turmoil and strife

This fantastic book tells the story of a young Jewish girl surviving the German invasion of France who grew up to become a fascinating young woman. The story weaves effortlessly through the ups and downs of Mademoiselle Gigi's sometimes turbulent but very exciting childhood through adolescence. A very easy read. I can't wait for the next book to learn more about Mademoiselle Gigi's adventures in Louisiana!!
My type of book

I have such appreciation for Mademoiselle Gigi through reading and re-reading this wonderful book. Truly an engaging story, the journey of the young Gigi Carriton will remain with you long afterward. I laughed, I cried, and generally felt very invested in her world and all the people in it, in her struggles and triumphs. Mademoiselle Gigi is exactly the type of book I love to read, and it causes me to wish that I could go back and meet the real-life Gigi, as it seems she was a fascinating person. I cannot wait to pick up the next book and learn more of her story.
Touching and fascination story. The author tells a great story worth reading.

Y'all, buy this book. I have seen it developed from the time I met Mademoiselle Gigi in Opelousas, Louisiana at one of author Dennis Ward's parties (Dennis is also author of the stage play Chez Gisele) - to playing a technical part for the stage play that was directed by Christy Leichty at Cité des Arts in Lafayette, Louisiana - to seeing part of Mademoiselle Gigi's story come to fruition and available to the public here on Amazon as a great work of literacy and storytelling. This book came directly out of the author's deep love and respect for Mademoiselle Gigi. Y'all buy this book.

This book kept me intrigued and it was very difficult to put down. I especially loved learning some history about the German invasion of France and one family’s plight, with the help of friends, the humor and laughter in times of adversity, and the love for one another through those times. I am looking forward to the sequel. Great job to all those who contributed in any way; especially to Dennis.
