Os Maias (Portuguese Edition)Eca de Queiroz, the author of Os Maias, is one of the greatest writers in the Portuguese language. For those who do not know, Portuguese, the language of Portugal, Brasil and assorted places in Africa and Asia is one of the most beautiful languages in the world, and is the language of several literary masterpieces, ignored only because so few people speak Portuguese. I guess it was Eca de Queiroz who said "Portuguese is the graveyeard of ideas", because what is said or writen in Portuguese is not disseminated as easily as what is said in other languages.
Os Maias is a fascinating novel with a very tragic twist, but what impressed me the most was the description of a very expensive and refined lifestyle enjoyed by a class that did absolutely nothing to earn it. Portugal is a very interesting country with a remarkable history. It is the land of the great navigators of the XIV, XV and XVI centuries. The Portuguese were the pioneers of sea travel. Tiny Portugal even managed to build an empire, although building en empire is probably nothing to be proud of. In any case, the legacy of Portugal is huge, Portugal cultural's influence lives on in Brazil, in Africa, in parts of China and India and in parts of the United States. However, at the time Portugal was enjoying the spoils brought from the colonies, the gold, the precious woods, the monarchy and the nobility lived a very high lifestyle while the people who worked the fields, built the houses and palaces, and did all the useful work went hungry, sick and oppressed. Os Maias never mentions these people, the novel is all about the useless upper class who contributed nothing to their country, or to the world. If one read Os Maias and also read Memorial do Convento, the Nobel Prize winning novel of Jose Saramago side by side, one would be able to see the human sacrifice that made possible the building of convents, cathedrals and palaces, as well as supported the lifestyle of the characters of Os Maias. Currently Portugal is going through a terrible recession and horrific austerity measures were announced. The Portuguese people continues to suffer as much as it did in the past, and this is a shame. However, Os Maias is worth reading as a well written, entertaining novel, and lovers of literature would be well advised to learn more about the great writers and poets who have used this unknown but beautiful language to craft great masterpieces.
