Présentation de l'éditeur

The saga of sex differences in brain and behavior begins with a tiny sperm swimming toward a huge egg, to contribute its tiny Y chromosome plus its copies of the other chromosomes. Genetic, anatomic and physiologic alterations in the male ensue, making his brain and behavior different in specific respects from his sister. Brain-wise, specific cell groups develop differently in males compared to females, in some cases right after birth and in other cases at puberty. But genetics and neuroanatomy do not dominate the scene. Prenatal stress, postnatal stress and lousy treatment at puberty all can affect males and females in different ways. The upshot of all these genetic and environmental factors produces small sex differences in certain abilities and huge sex differences in feelings, in pain and in suffering. Put this all together and the reader will see that biological and cultural influences on gender roles operate at so many different levels to influence behavioral mechanisms that gender role choices are flexible, reversible and non-dichotomous, especially in modern societies.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Pfaff gives us an insider's view of men and women 8 avril 2011

Prof. Donald Pfaff brings us right up to date with the neurobiological differences between males and females - and tries to unravel the origins of these differences. This is different to scholarly articles in that he tries to personalise the researchers using familiar names and locations - which gives this book an interesting edge. The text is great but the diagrams are somewhat clunky for even a semi-technical book. They seem to have been done by an artist with not much idea of biology - or perhaps they were trying to make the diagrams less serious. They certainly achieved this. The one on page 175 showing pediatric surgery to correct a urinary opening defect is not up to the standard of accuracy in the text. It is distinctly odd. The book is well thought out and is logically organised. He skims over the cognitive differencs between man and women as it is not his area - and he makes a few generalisations that could be more nuanced. Contact with a cognitive specialist in sex differences would be a benefit. In summary - a great book that makes you take notes to keep up with all the technical twists and turns but leaves you feeling that you are right up to date with the lastest research from an internationally respected researcher.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 What makes us who, and what, we are? 11 août 2014

The question haunts us, are we made by nature or nurture, or the combination of the two? Beyond the obvious, how are men and women different? While I'm not a neurobiologist I found this book both a bit challenging and highly enlightening (thankfully the Kindle dictionary link made it easy to look up unfamiliar words). After reading the book I still cannot answer the questions posed but I do have a deeper appreciation of what a miracle a "normal" human being is and some better insight into the differences between men and women at the biochemical level. As with all good science writing this book kicked off more questions and more interest. The one that now bounces around in my head is: "what emotionally happens to a person who, through an injury, loses the ability to smell?" Yeah, it is all connected and the implications might be profound.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not much help in answering the big questions such as sexual orientation 11 mars 2014

Reading results from the animal brain studies was generally interesting. The implications for human behavior were cliche and speculative. Not much new stuff there. If hormones and receptors and their locations and timing are really what make the brain work in sexuality, what is a "psychological" factor? There is still a lot to learn.

I thought the discussion of homosexuality was lame. He seemed unwilling to "go there."
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Probably a great book, but very technical 2 septembre 2014

Probably a great book, but very technical. After a felt buried in detail and couldn't keep track of the "carry away" message. Lots and lots of mice and rats here. Surely there should have been a discussion of the extent to which we can extrapolate from rodents to humans.
