Présentation de l'éditeur

At last, a clear manual for managing slaves the Roman way. In How to Manage Your Slaves, Marcus Sidonius Falx offers practical advice, showing where and how to buy slaves and how to get the best out of them. He explains how to tell good slaves from bad, offers guidance on the punishment of miscreants, and reveals the secrets of command and authority. He covers the delicate subjects of when you should let your slaves have sex and whether to engage in sex with them yourself - and considers when to set them free. Armed with this guide you will be master in your own home: your household will be a comfort to your family, its running the envy of your neighbours. Slavery was a core institution in the Roman world for all its long existence. As they conquered, the Romans enslaved millions and then bred from this stock to maintain their numbers in times of peace. It almost never occurred to anyone that slavery might be dispensed with and to no one at all that it was morally reprehensible. Up to now ancient slavery may have been difficult to fathom: this Roman's-eye view takes us to the heart of the matter and, based on a wealth of original sources, lets us understand just why slaves meant so much to the Romans.

Serious business! Once or twice, you'll laugh out loud; more than once, you'll ponder and mull things over. Managing your slaves is a full-time is managing your own management of your slaves - respecting them (just in case you free them later and they become powerful), training them, caring for them, and mastering your own emotions, as well as finding the right balance in the little society you're creating... in our enlightened times, we don't have slaves, but...then, do we? how do we think about 'them?' as enslaved by circumstance? or by nature? or??? Roman and Greek schools of thought diverge... Well-researched and documented and thought-provoking, despite its rather dreadful title...

Un tour de force de l'auteur, pour qui s'intéresse à la Rome antique, mais amenant une réflexion "politique" et "philosophique" intemporelle.

Interesting perspective on ancient slavery, a concept that is hard for modern readers to comprehend. The author really tries to get inside the head of a Roman slave owner and mostly succeeds, but sometimes the juxtaposition of different time periods in Roman history was a little annoying. The narrator somehow knows about centuries of Roman economic life while also exhibiting the biases of the typical upper class Roman from the first century (early empire).

First, do not worry, How to Manage Your Slaves is no apology of slavery. On the contrary, it is an explicit portrayal of that brutal institution and its role in the Roman world. It is also true to the sources: the tongue-in-cheek, self-help format repackages disparate primary texts to make them into coherent chapters for the reader. Toner's latest work explores all the facets of Roman slave-ownership: from acquisition to management, from legal rights to private abuse. Narrated by the fictitious, cranky, and old-fashioned Marcus Sidonius Falx, it is an easily read and often humorous volume, at least as much as the subject allows. It also is a reminder that Roman civilization was in large part dependent on slavery, and that much of the civic infrastructure we still admire was built by slaves. Finally, it allows for the peculiarities of Roman slavery, showing that not all slave regimes are the same. Some (a minority) of slaves were better off than free men or women, especially the domestic slaves of high-ranking individuals. Many Roman slaves were manumitted, though as Toner shows, the motivations for that were more complex than simple generosity. Some even went on to make fortunes with the help of their patrons. How to Manage Your Slaves is an honest and hard-hitting contribution to Roman history, combining originality with invaluable source references.

This is the same book, meanwhile, as Toner's Roman Guide to Slave Management, which is the US edition.

This book offers genuinely practical advice. Are your slaves acting out of line or otherwise showing disrespect to their master? Are your slaves unmotivated layabouts and more interested in their next meal than increasing your bottom line? Then this book is for you. My slave-holdings have quintupled in size because I have assiduously followed the principles espoused by Marcus Sidonius Falx. Sadly, it is written in English and not my native Latin, but all the same I have found it to be an entertaining read. This book is much better than that dry prose poured out by Gibbons into his six volumes. A must-read.
