Présentation de l'éditeur

A compact, profoundly inspiring book that captures the spirit of Nelson Mandela, distilling the South African leader’s wisdom into 15 vital life lessons

We long for heroes and have too few. Nelson Mandela, who died in 2013 at the age of ninety-five, is the closest thing the world has to a secular saint. He liberated a country from a system of violent prejudice and helped unite oppressor and oppressed in a way that had never been done before.

Now Richard Stengel, the editor of Time magazine, has distilled countless hours of intimate conversation with Mandela into fifteen essential life lessons. For nearly three years, including the critical period when Mandela moved South Africa toward the first democratic elections in its history, Stengel collaborated with Mandela on his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, and traveled with him everywhere. Eating with him, watching him campaign, hearing him think out loud, Stengel came to know all the different sides of this complex man and became a cherished friend and colleague.

In Mandela’s Way, Stengel recounts the moments in which “the grandfather of South Africa” was tested and shares the wisdom he learned: why courage is more than the absence of fear, why we should keep our rivals close, why the answer is not always either/or but often “both,” how important it is for each of us to find something away from the world that gives us pleasure and satisfaction—our own garden. Woven into these life lessons are remarkable stories—of Mandela’s childhood as the protégé of a tribal king, of his early days as a freedom fighter, of the twenty-seven-year imprisonment that could not break him, and of his fulfilling remarriage at the age of eighty.

This uplifting book captures the spirit of this extraordinary man—warrior, martyr, husband, statesman, and moral leader—and spurs us to look within ourselves, reconsider the things we take for granted, and contemplate the legacy we’ll leave behind.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Everyone is Virtuous Until Proven Otherwise! 12 mars 2015

It is hard to find one person who has not heard about Nelson Mandela. How many people in our recent history spent 27 years in jail and came out to become a president of a large nation? If I hear of such a person I surely would be very anxious to find out more about him. In trying to unravel the personal mystery of this great personality the author spends considerable time living, working and socialising with Mr. Mandela. Finally he comes out with a list of features which he believes explain the world wide respect and admiration for this outstanding person.

But what a life he endured in reaching his goals! From an underground freedom fighter to a compromising diplomat. From a hateful and vindictive enemy of the state to a caller for peace and coexistence. From humiliation within the apartheid regime to the highest levels of world respect. Hardly was there a world personality that did not pay due respect to Mandela on one occasion or another. On his funeral, representatives from the greatest nations flocked to bid him farewell.

Behind the love and respect, however, there were some deep personal traits which the author uncovers and identifies. One of these is: "See the good in others". In Mandela's social principles everyone is virtuous until proven otherwise. We must try to see the good in others. He would not even say a bad word about the man who sought to have him hanged; he would say : he was a decent chap and very polite. What an extraordinary attitude from a man who was so ill-treated in his life.

In Mandela's biography there are indeed lessons for all of us.

Mandela's Way is a truly inspiring and applicable book on leadership and self mastery. I first read the book in 2010 and subsequently several times since then. It is a staple favorite of mine when I am charting unfamiliar territory that life can bring. Richard Stengel does a wonderful job of painting the picture of a man whom always maintained an eye to the long-term. Undoubtedly, his experience in collaborating with Mandela for his biography enabled his success in writing these 15 lessons. Stengel's poignant desire for this book to serve as a reflection for his children on the full experience he had with Mandela comes through in the style of his writing. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for insights to leading yourself and others through life's challenges. Although he is still human, we are lucky to have the wonderful example of Mandela's leadership and to have Stengel put it into this easy to digest format.

Very Inspirational book from one of my heroes. I was a fan of Richard Stengel first book on Mandela 'Long Walk to Freedom' and although this is no way in the same category as that book it still contains great insight into the compassion of this great leader.

Mandela's life experiences are amazing.. He just forgave everyone and decided not to speak evil of anyone, and made his "enemies" part of his Cabinet....What Mandela accomplished, taken apart and analyzed, were simple ways of life...forgiveness....putting others first..just thinking the best of every human being, because, as Mandela said, "Somehow, I just think that will help the other person in some way.." are available for us all, and the world would be a MUCH better place if all of us read this book and began to life with no more hatred and unforgiveness .......
