HASH(0x8ab19288) étoiles sur 5 scattered, poorly organized, little text 1 mai 2006

Despite its claim of being for intermediate and advanced players, the first 17 pages provide what you would find in any beginner's mandoling book: How to tune, how to read tablature, and simple advice like "practice regularly" and "the metronome is a useful tool". It's obviously a way to get the page count up. In this whole section, there are only a few sentences about crosspicking, and these just tell you how great you'll sound when you master the technique.

Section 2, consisting of 10 pages, provides the core technique through excercises that demonstrate forward and reverse rolls, alternating bass, and a tremolo variation or two. The content is almost entirely tablature without commentary.

Section 3, "Crosspicking Bluegrass style", provides excercises meant to prepare you for the upcoming full song, and then the song itself. The excercises are accompanied by illustrations of suggested fingering. Unfortunately, the song itself will require fingering and techniques that were not covered by the excercises.

If you want to get an idea of what is crosspicking, this book could help, but overall I find it very disappointing.

HASH(0x8ab194d4) étoiles sur 5 An essential book for any student of the mandolin. Buy it!! 22 juillet 2009

I ordered this book without researching it at all. I was expecting a little manual and was pleasantly surprised at what I got.

The lessons are well thought out. After working through a few exercises things started to click for me. I was confidently hitting the strings I meant to hit, I was moving between chord shapes fluently (at least for me), which was a real unadvertised benefit. I also really liked the encouraging tone the book has throughout. Enjoy the journey!

Many method books teach you how to play tunes. This teaches you the technique behind the music, allowing you to apply what you've learned elsewhere.

A note on the tablature format: I've never used tab, and frankly wasn't interested in learning anything beyond standard notation. After going through a few of the lessons, it was evident that tab is the better choice for a book of this nature. It takes the ambiguity out of standard notation. You can visually see what string and picking pattern you're supposed to be playing.

I enjoyed the artwork and overall style of the book. It doesn't make you feel like you're stuck in 1982, like some other Mel Bay books I have.

I guess it's pretty obvious that I like this book. I've been disappointed in some other books I've purchased over the years, so this was a welcome surprise. Buy it! It's worth it at thrice the price!

HASH(0x8ab1978c) étoiles sur 5 Very good but incomplete. 7 novembre 2010

This is a very good book; I got a lot of good use from it. It takes about 6 months to work through the exercises and the songs.

There are 2 deficiencies. First, there is no accompanying CD so that you can play along or for that matter to have a reference point to know that you are playing correctly. Second, the music is depicted is bluegrass. Mandolin can be played in many musical genres but most mandolin instruction books, including this one, cover bluegrass music.

The book is probably best suited to be used by a student taking mandolin lessons from a teacher. Some of the songs are quite intricate, playing at 200 beats per minute or playing far up the neck.

Mickey's Crosspicking guide gives excellent exercises to enable you to become a better picker.
Effective, and useful, arpeggios used to improve skills were immediately put into my repetoire
and included in my jamming. My fingers hurt but I'm a better mandolin player for it!
I particularly like how Mickey previews what will be the main skill and gives practice for it before he lets you
loose on the songs. I highly recommend Mickey's book for the serious mandolin player who wants to get the basics down tight.

I have been a mandolin builder and player for over 40 years. This book really helped improve my crosspicking techniques. It was easy to understand and very well written. I am very proud to have this man's book in my library. My 10 year grandson is now studying this book and is doing great with it. Jerry Tekell, Italy,Texas
