Description du produit

Présentation de l'éditeur

A little more than seventy-five years ago, Kate L. Turabian drafted a set of guidelines to help students understand how to write, cite, and formally submit research writing. Seven editions and more than nine million copies later, the name Turabian has become synonymous with best practices in research writing and style. Her Manual for Writers continues to be the gold standard for generations of college and graduate students in virtually all academic disciplines. Now in its eighth edition, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations has been fully revised to meet the needs of today’s writers and researchers.

The Manual retains its familiar three-part structure, beginning with an overview of the steps in the research and writing process, including formulating questions, reading critically, building arguments, and revising drafts. Part II provides an overview of citation practices with detailed information on the two main scholarly citation styles (notes-bibliography and author-date), an array of source types with contemporary examples, and detailed guidance on citing online resources.

The final section treats all matters of editorial style, with advice on punctuation, capitalization, spelling, abbreviations, table formatting, and the use of quotations. Style and citation recommendations have been revised throughout to reflect the sixteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. With an appendix on paper format and submission that has been vetted by dissertation officials from across the country and a bibliography with the most up-to-date listing of critical resources available, A Manual for Writers remains the essential resource for students and their teachers.

Ce livre sera sans doute formidable si je le reçois un jour, déclaré livré par UPS? il m'est très difficile de pouvoir joindre quelqu'un alors que il ne m'est jamais parvenu.

J'espère qu'Amazon se bougera un peu.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Errors in Examples of Italics 11 août 2016
Par Dolph - Publié sur

The quality and organization of the book is good; however, there is a serious issue on the Kindle version. In blue-green colored examples where are supposed to be italicized, such as book titles, fonts are not actually italicized; instead, they are typed in a slightly different non-italicized font, which is confusing. These errors are all over in the book. I suppose that perhaps something went wrong during the e-book conversion, but I wonder why this issue has not been fixed by now even after the several years of Kindle publication. This is the book that is supposed to show the "correct" style, including italics in examples. I hope the publisher will correct these errors and run an updated version automatically on my Kindle soon.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 8th edition is legit!! 30 avril 2013

I upgraded to the 8th edition after my 7th edition was completely worn out- too much use. The 8th is more concise and easy to use as well as includes more citation information for electronic sources, etc.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 No page numbers in the index??!!! 11 mai 2016

To be such a relied-upon standard of style, Turabian leaves a lot to interpretation. "Check with your professor or department" is not uncommon in this volume.

But the worst thing about the book is the index. There are no page numbers. Instead, the index uses section numbers. For example, If you look up citation of manuscripts, you're guided to "17.6.4," then you have to flip through the book until you find that section. It's on page 195; why couldn't the index just list 195? Finding sections is awkward and unnecessarily time consuming because the sections are different lengths, and start in different parts of the page, unlike page numbers which are all in the top corners, and equal length--it's why they're there! I can only assume that the publisher is attempting to save money by not having to re-index the entire work when printing a new edition. To University of Chicago Press: give readers a proper index, please.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 you'd best get the book 27 juillet 2016

This falls into the category of "if you must you must." I've written many papers in APA, and if you have as well, Turabian format will have very strange differences that make no sense what-so-ever. Still, if you must use Turabian, you'd best get the book. I found APA easy to figure out to the point that I never cracked the book, so I figured Turabian would be the same way. I was wrong and have been dinged a lot for it. Do not let yourself believe you do not need this book because APA was easy. Turabian is not easy. It is confusing. And the websites on it are not helpful. Buy the book.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Dry reading 27 mai 2012
Par Aletheuo - Publié sur

I read this entire book and found it to be very dry reading. I was more familiar with the APA style. This style seems a bit less formal in some ways, but in others it (just like APA) is ridiculously overbearing. Nevertheless, the academic world adores it, so it is what it is. The first few chapters are reasonably engaging. They cover how to initiate and tackle a research project. The next few chapters dig into the realm of starting to write a first draft and then revising it. The second half of the book, which is the driest, is about citation style. The rules are spelled out for almost every imaginable citation scenario that one can concieve in his or her mind. The chapters on spelling rules regarding possessives, punctuaction rules, and capitalization rules are probably the most useful for the general population. At the end of the book is an appendix with examples of paper formats for various things such as a cover page, table of contents, chapter page, page with footnotes, etc...
