Présentation de l'éditeur

57BC. The fearsome Belgae have gathered a great army to oppose Rome, and Fronto and the legions assemble once more to take Caesar's war against the most dangerous tribes in the northern world.

While the legions battle the Celts in the fiercest war of Caesar's career, the plots and conspiracies against him, both at Rome and among his own army, become ever deeper and more dangerous.

Biographie de l'auteur

I live with my wife, my son and two (close approximations of) dogs in rural North Yorkshire, where my wife and I both grew up, surrounded by friends and family. A born and bred Yorkshireman with a love of the country, I cannot envisage spending my life anywhere else, though my anchor is sometimes tested as the wanderlust hits and we travel wherever I can find the breathtaking remains of the classical world. I have a love of travel and history, architecture and writing and those four interact well enough to keep me almost permanently busy. Since leaving school and University, I have tried a great number of careers, including car sales, insurance, software engineering, computer network management, civil service and even painting and decorating sales. I have lived in four counties and travelled as widely as time and budget allowed and find myself, on the cusp of my fortieth year, back where I began and finally doing something I love. Having written a number of unpublished short stories in my early days, I decided back in 2003 to try and write a full length novel. That was the start of Marius' Mules. Being a lover of Roman history, I decided to combine my love of writing and my love of classical history. Marius' Mules was followed two years later by Interregnum, my attempt to create a new fantasy story still with a heavy flavour of Rome. Since then, the success and popularity of both has spawned sequels to each work, with three tales in each series so far and more planned.

A great sequel to the first tome of the conquest of Gaul. From the relentless military action to the gripping personal and emotional interactions among Caesar's senior staff, 'Roman period buffs' like myself will find themselves sharing the daily life of a Roman legate immersed in one of the most adventurous and romantic conquests of our founding empire. A must-read.

HASH(0x8add9138) étoiles sur 5 A joy to read! 26 octobre 2011

The Marius' Mules series has been a joy to read. S.J.A. Turney has lost none of the ingredients in this third book that have made his previous books so successful.

The three books have offered a fantastic historical journey coupled with a style of writing that has allowed the reader to establish strong emotional attachments with specific characters and their individual personas. I came to feel their joy, their pain, their rage and much more. By the end of the third book I felt like I knew each one personally.

Our journey began with book one (2009) set in 58BC with the tenth legion camped in northern Italy awaiting Julius Caesar to outline his plans for the invasion of Gaul. We experience the camaraderie of such characters as Fronto, Priscus, Balbus and many more as their relationships are cemented through life's trials and especially through `blood and guts' battles with the various Gallic tribes.

Book two (2010) takes place in 57BC as Caesar readies his legions to deal with the rebellious Belgae and their huge army and if this is not enough he has to deal with plots and conspiracies within his army and back in Rome.

Book three (2011) is set in 56BC with events in Rome, then in Gaul to uprisings caused by Crassus' (the younger) harsh rule and then back to Rome to deal with gangs that had destroyed the peace and safety of the city.

I hope that S.J.A. Turney decides to continue the saga with a fourth book as I value his writing style and his meticulousness with historical facts, famous people and events.

A lot of the history books I have read on this period are based on Caesar. It is usually very long lists of the numbers fighting, where their tribes are from etc. This creation of the author, for me, has brought the history to life. Following the adventures of Fronto as Legate of the 10th legion, like the sharpe and Cato series, allows you to keep to the broad historical truth while allowing the author to entertain.

Instead of lists you are swept up with the charachters into the battles. Would rate this author as up with the likes of Simon Scarrow and Bernard Cornwell for his creation of a very likeable series.

This series for me has been very good value for money and kept me busy reading.

HASH(0x8add930c) étoiles sur 5 SJA Turney writes another excellent book 12 février 2011

Marius' Mules II - The Belgae follows the first book seamlessly. It is as if we wintered in Gaul together and are ready to campaign with Fronto again. The characters are familiar and entertaining, and make one feel as though it would be exciting to serve alongside them. The battle scenes are thrilling! Turney makes the reader feel as if he's also in the assault. His descriptions are intense: metal on metal, orders being shouted over blairing horns, carnage and blood,... The huge attack by the Nervii is totally great. In this book, Legate Fronto is drawn closer to the frontline of Roman politics; clearly a place he does not want to be! Mr. Turney's books add enlightenment and life to Caesar's Gallic campaign. I'm looking forward to Marius' Mules III!

HASH(0x8add9600) étoiles sur 5 Another solid read 19 octobre 2011

This is obviously from the name of the title the third book by SJA Turney about Caesar's invasion of Gaul. At this point in the story you already know if you enjoy Turney's writing or not, so I won't say anything on that. Though you should not start with this book, it does not stand on its own, Turney just throws you right into the story. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on who you are. It has been close to a year since I read Book 2 so the begging of the book took me awhile to get everything straight. The first third or so of the story was a little slow, but as soon as Fronto gets back to the legion the action picks right up. While not my favorite book of all times if you enjoy Turney's other books then for $2.99 you can't go wrong.

HASH(0x8add969c) étoiles sur 5 Action packed... 19 mai 2013

This second novel in the series is a strong, entertaining read. The author's vision of the main character improves over the first novel and you can tell Turney is really hitting his stride as a writer. The narrative is fast paced, action packed, with historically fascinating elements. The main character is joined by well developed supporting characters who I found myself caring about almost more than Fronto, the main character. Would definitely recommend this for the historical fiction crowd who enjoy a solid read.
