Description du produit

Présentation de l'éditeur

For mature readers only. This pulp, cyberpunk, technothriller has profanity, violence, sexual situations, and an atheist protagonist. There are some disturbing scenes that may upset the more sensitive reader.

For Jonathan Harkon, living life in exile is never easy.

Forced into hiding his true identity and leaving the only home and family he's ever known, Jonathan finds himself halfway across the solar system, smuggling condoms for the religiously-oppressed citizens of an outer-system colony named Sanctity.

It isn't long before his cover as a bouncer for a local "bikini-bar" is questioned, and he is quickly embroiled in Sanctity's hardcore, underground, sex-slave trade.

With few friends by his side and only his ship, the HMS Mary Rose, to rely upon, Jonathan will need every ounce of the strength and skill that his heavily enhanced, genetically-engineered body can manage, if he means to survive and expose the terrible truth behind Sanctity's "Meat Market."

Set in the not too distant future, "The Meat Market" is the first short novel in author James Chalk's "Jonathan Harkon Adventure" series.

James Chalk has created a Sci-Fi story set in the future with such excellent detail and such plausibility that it's so realistic and could, in fact, probably become so. Some readers may find the subject and the content shocking, though I think that anything that shocks prudes can only be a good thing. In Jonathan Harkon we have a protagonist that is deeply involving, witty and opinionated and therefore a character we're genuinely interested in as we follow his adventures in a solar system with very different and unique colonies everywhere. The Meat Market might be dark and at times depraved but it's an excellent starting point for what is sure to be a compelling series.

Not a regular reader of sci-fi, I enjoyed this book greatly, because it was so different. The realistic portrayal of not such a distant future, with human colonies spread all over the solar system, but not always in a good way, soon we come to discover that nothing is what Jonathan thought at first it was.
Fast-paced, full of amazingly diverse characters and realistic descriptions, the most unexpected twist and turns, this novel kept me glued to its pages. I can't wait to read the book 2!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Gritty and real and hilarious scifi! 14 février 2014

I was totally blown away by this book. It takes place in a human future where we have colonies all over the solar system. But what made this book for me was the narrator's voice. He's gritty and real and very human -- not to mention hilarious -- all things which are sorely lacking in a lot of scifi. The lead character Jonathan Harkon is an atheist with a big libido and a lot of wit and opinions, which he is never afraid to write about. That's what makes the story feel so real -- Harkon's constantly hilarious and spot-on narration. It's very crude and very modern, but if you like that kind of stuff you will love this story.

A lot of scifi you read is about people who are all similar wearing one-piece leotards. But Meat Market feels like a realistic portrayal of what a human diaspora might actually be like -- with a multitude of religious, political, technological and ethical differences between colonies and between peoples. I like that each of the colonies is very different, each one being founded on its own religious, cultural and commercial principles -- principles reflected in everything about the society, even the design of the space station colonies.

Oh and the technology is just great. It feels like the kind of technology that would actually occur in the future: nanobots and A.I. ships that act like wives and stealth technology and biological upgrades for the upper classes.

Best part is, it's all used in a story that is wacky, dark, depraved and unpredictable. Author James Chalk has essentially taken a "Criminal Minds" type of storyline and infused it into a "Dune" type of universe with a gritty and vulgar and witty first-person narrator who combines the best qualities of "Dexter" and "American Psycho." Good stuff overall!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A look into the future 12 avril 2014

James has written a fantastic sci-fi novel with The Meat Market. Not only does it take you into a future that is both corrupt and depraved, but it also paints a picture of where the world could be in a matter of decades.

Jonathan Harkon is a fantastic character that will draw you deep into his world, forcing you to breathe and cringe with each step he takes. The author has created characters that will make you wonder if they are real or alive on the page.

This is a fantastic story that makes someone like me, who hasn’t picked up a sci-fi novel in many years, want to return to the genre that first taught me the love of reading and books in general. I’ll be adding all of James’ books to my library, as well as anything else that he writes in the Jonathan Harkon series.

A must read for anyone who loves the sci-fi genre and has the stomach to see where the world could be in the future.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A very unique and enthralling voice 31 janvier 2014

I found The Meat Market to be a breath of fresh air, when compared to most of the other books that I have read lately. Chalk definitely writes in his own unique tone, which creates vivid scenes and characters in this book. The main character Harkon is a complex and engaging dude, and I while I was never quite sure if I entirely liked him, couldn't help but root for him in this seedy sci-fi world.

This book is an excellent change-up if you are looking for a book that will get you thinking and take you down a road that you will think about for a while (perhaps with trepidation). Highly Recommended.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great read! 1 septembre 2014

I had a fair idea of what this book was about going in and wasn't disappointed. Genetically enhanced and exhaustively trained individuals in sci fi tend to wear the Peter Perfect crown and it is quite obvious they are going to overcome all odds from the get go. Chalk's Jonathon Harkon is a very grounded and real person, warts and all. This makes for a very visceral read that I found utterly enthralling.

What was the cherry on the top for me was the humor. Without giving away any spoilers, as this is already in the blub, Harkon starts his adventure by smuggling condoms to a sexually repressed society. It is a very accurate take on human nature. If a thing is forbidden/difficult to get, then that is the very thing a large part of society will want. They will also act in a more depraved way when they get it as all the holds are now gone. The sinister overtones add a piquant thrill to the action. Highly recommended. I will be looking out for more books from this author.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 HOLY WHAT THE HELL!!! 12 avril 2014

James, you are insane, and I LOVE IT!!! Let’s see how many cliché’s I can use to describe this book…

A page turner – yup!!! You better set aside some time, cause you’re not gonna want to put it down.

A nail biter – uhuh!!! Remember to breathe; don’t want to pass out in the middle of the good stuff.

Overly graphic – yes, there is a lot of details that support the world he has created. Does that mean it’s believable? Not to me, but I love sci-fi, hair on fire, adventures that are way beyond what ‘could’ happen – that’s what daydreaming is all about and it’s fantastic!!!

So… you need to be 18+ to read this book, that’s a given. You also need to have some fortitude, cause it ain’t pretty. If you can take it, it is ONE HELL OF A RIDE and I can’t wait to read the next one!!!
