Présentation de l'éditeur

A New York Times Best Seller!

In the spirit of JUDGE DREDD and the current hit series THE BOYS, MARSHAL LAW is a violent, satirical series about a futuristic law official charged with policing super-heroes gone rogue by any means necessary, all while fighting his own self-hatred for being the thing he hates most: a super-hero. Featuring art by Kevin O'Neill, illustrator of THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, the centerpiece of this massive volume is the original six-part tale in which Marshal Law hunts down the Sleepman, a serial killer who is somehow connected to the popular hero known as The Public Spirit.

Biographie de l'auteur

Pat Mills is one of Britain's most popular writers and comics editors, and is often credited for having revitalized the comics industry in Britain in the 1970s. After working on several war titles, Mills developed  morally ambiguous heroes including Nemesis the Warlock and the ABC Warriors. He continues to write dark science fiction series like Slaine and American Reaper, as well as several Doctor Who radio plays.

HASH(0x991e4150) étoiles sur 5 Wonderful Satire 23 mai 2013

Beautiful collection of an under appreciated 80s/90s series that started under Marvel's Epic line and jumped to multiple publishers over time. It is more satire than parody in the sense that most of it's jokes are very very dark, especially in the first half. It takes many of the principles of what makes a hero and perverts them by showing normal people given powers without any sort of nobility or special sense of responsibility. The Boys seems a like a nice tribute to Marshall Law without the Gonzo tone O'Neill/Mills uses.
The basic premise is that Marshall Law is a police officer, with powers but they're never used after the first issue, dealing with super-powered heroes who were given their powers to fight in a South American war (earlier wars are added in future issues and kind of throws off the vibe set up in the first story). He lives in San Futuro (San Francisco after a devastating earthquake)
The first story line deals with a Superman figure who's under suspicion for being a serial killer. Other stories deal with various superhero types like the Avengers, Batman, JSA, and the Legion. The Legion story has a lot of Aliens in it as well. Missing is a Savage Dragon team-up and a Marshall Law vs. Pinhead series.
You can see the evolution of the character as it goes on. Marshall seems to mellow and in the last storyline the character is a lot less harsh and more empathetic towards those around him. Some, like me, may not care for the change.
The book itself is beautifully colored and has a full color wraparound hardback binding.
If you enjoy Judge Dredd, The Boys, or Kick-Ass, then this would be a pleasure to read and reread.

A really cool story, not to mention the very nice hardback. This is very much a spoof of Judge Dredd, with better art and a much sillier, albeit very stark and sad world. There is definitely dark humor here and its definitely not for kids. If you can appreciate spoofs, or like a cool story and awesome artwork give it a try I purchased this months ago and it was finally released. So excited to finish it one more time.

HASH(0x991e4b70) étoiles sur 5 Fantastic book as relevant today as it was when it was first published. 16 novembre 2013

Awesome graphic novel from one of the best, and most under-rated (at least in America), writers in the business. The artwork is similarly amazing - and again from one of the most unique, creative and under-rated (again in America), artists in the business.
This is comic book satire at its best. It has aged well (it was first published more than a quarter of a century ago!) yet is just as relevant today as it was then - perhaps even moreso with the ridiculous, vague, unwinnable and excuse to curtail citizen rights, 'War on Terror (TM)'.
Buy it, read it and enjoy it.

HASH(0x991e4b7c) étoiles sur 5 I purchased this because I own the original series 23 août 2013

I purchased this collection of one of the greatest anti-hero stories I have read in years in my opinion. Marshal Law was a fantastic series and that every mini-series and one shot that came after it I purchased because I really enjoyed it that much. There are some similarities between this and Brat Pak which is one of the great anti-hero stories that I believe pre-dates Marshal Law. Whereas Brat Pak deals with the dark side of super heroes and their side kicks and how the super heroes exploit their side kicks, Marshal Law is the story of a man battling supers that are more criminal and dangerous then he is. He is just vilified for doing what needs to be done to protect the average citizen from these costumed freaks as he calls them at times. The original series is somewhat of a Jack the Ripper type story in which the Superman type character of this world has a son who is crazed and deranged and kills women who dress as his super hero mother in an attempt to get back at his father who denies his existence and tried to kill his mother while in the womb. Dark stuff, but fantastic story in my opinion. And at the price it was sold for when pre-orders were available made this a must buy for me and my collection.

I don't know why Marshal Law entertains me so much. Maybe it is the wanton bloodshed. Maybe the snarky hidden pieces of text. Maybe the government corruption rings too true. Maybe that Marshal Law is not some high society guy protecting the little guy. I don't know. What I do know is that Marshal Law kicks ass.
