3.0 étoiles sur 5 Introductory Sample Chapters Only 26 juillet 2014

This book is only a few introductory chapters of a larger book written by a television personality in the UK. It's far from being "Everything You Need to Get You Started" beyond the most basic list of sewing supplies. There are numerous references to the "full book" in the Introduction.

Since the author is UK-based, her terminology for some sewing items and techniques could be confusing to a US reader. (What is a "rouleau loop" and where would it be used, for example?)

Most of this short book is taken up with lists and descriptions of what the author considers sewing essentials and tools and useful additions. The length (and total cost) of this list would overwhelm most beginners, and many items could be postponed until the beginner is on firmer ground with her or his new hobby.

Another portion is taken up with how to customize a dressmaker's dummy. Why this is included in a short introductory book aimed at beginners is a puzzle to me; not only is this a high-ticket item and beyond the budget for most beginners, I have to say that I have never found the need for one in my 40 years of sewing. Why not use this book space for information that would be of more use to the new sewer and to better highlight the author's teaching style about sewing techniques?

The remainder of the book covers the basics of using printed tissue patterns and a few hand sewing techniques for hemming.

There is a mention in the Introduction of links to patterns (as an additional purchase, but would these be available for purchase for US readers?) in the "full book" for projects.

There is a technical problem with the Introduction and the chapters of the book dealing with sewing tools and essentials. For some reason the book designers decided to present these sections in a grayed font which is extremely difficult to read on e-ink Kindles since it blends into the background with insufficient contrast. It would be more readable on a Kindle Fire or Kindle app, but it shows that all devices were not considered equally when this book was formatted.

Not recommended. If you are truly interested in learning how to sew, I would suggest looking at the line of Singer or Simplicity sewing books which are all excellent and contain practical projects and techniques well described and illustrated without the possible misunderstandings caused by the UK terminology for beginning sewers in the US.

Too short to be useful, this piece seems designed as just a teaser for her other books. With that said, it should make us want to buy them.

This makes me want to throw her book, which isn't a good thing considering the only thing that I can throw is my Kindle. I actually learned more about sewing as a 4-H kid from one demonstration than I learned in this "book". It's a waste of time, and leads me to believe her other books will be an equal waste of time.

very disappointing. The second half of this book has projects that are mostly of no use. The apparel projects require you to buy a pattern and then refer you to the instructions in the pattern contents. There are many areas in this book where a picture would be nice and more information. I was looking for help with machine hemming and actually found more help in my sewing machine manual book. There are some nice tips in the first half of the book but not enough to warrant buying. Also it seems that most sewing books all cover the same information about needles, sewing machine, threat, lighting, tools etc , this is all readily available online these days so why bother keep printing it in books.

This really was lacking in telling me everything I need to know...I am new to sewing, and think an "Everything you need to know..." would include at a minimum explaining sewing terms and explanations and examples of how to use the essential tools she identifies.

I got this book in hope that it could be a help and guide . All it did was refer me to buy the "FULL VERSION". Therefore, it wasted my time. Why put out an e-short at all just tell people to buy the FULL version.
