I have been a vegetarian for years and had decided to go totally vegan 3 months ago. I was eating vegetables, fruit, legumes,whole wheat bread, grains, nuts, seeds, starches, & natural nut butters. I felt better but I need to lose weight and had not. I am a big fan of Dr. McDougall and spent a lot of time on his website. I finally decided to act on what he said in this book and "The Starch Solution" book. I have been following his plan for maximum weight loss for 7 days. This is vegetables, starches, grains, 2 fruits a day and legumes. He recommends no bread, pasta, nuts, seeds, or avocados until you reach your goal. (He has always said no oils of any kind.) I felt a little tired for the first day or so but now I feel great and have lost 5 lbs in 7 days. I am sticking with this until I reach my goal and then I will add some things back as recommended in the Starch Solution. I have about 50 lbs to loose and I have tried it all. It has gotten harder to lose weight as I have gotten older (59). I was not overweight when I was younger but when I reached 40 the weight just began to accumulate. This is the first time I don't have to count points, calories, or feel deprived. I can eat as
much as I want and I have developed a new apprciation for the natural flavors of unprocessed food. I will update this as time goes on with my process.

Great book! I am a diebetic and have had lots of trouble loosing weight. The pounds have been falling off me with little effort on the McDougall diet & I have cut back drastically on my insulin. I didn't expect that I would be cutting back on insulin eating starches. Go Figure.

UPDATE: I so regret having to eat my words, and admit that once again, this turned out to NOT be my forever eating plan. Yes, I lost a total of 30 lbs being very strict on the McDougall program over the year that I stuck to it. And initially, I felt that I had more energy. But after a while, I had to admit that I still didn't feel well. I didn't have energy, was fatigued all the time, no energy in my muscles. I was eating all day long, but seemed I couldn't get enough energy from the food. I was totally wiped out at the end of the work day. I couldn't keep it up, and as usual, as soon as I altered from the strict diet, I gained back the 30 lbs. And I'm not talking about eating chocolate chip cookies for lunch, just going back to being an ordinary vegan.

Then, after being vegan and even McDougall vegan for 5 years, I felt that I had to try another way. Now I'm now eating mainly Paleo. Even briefly considered a ketogenic diet. I now have more energy and am not as easily fatigued. I'm not hungry between meals. I just feel better when I eat a good amount of healthy fat and a reasonable amount of animal protein.

I don't think one size fits all when it comes to diet, and this one might work wonders for some people. But for me, after a mighty struggle, I found that veganism and McDougall did not make me feel well (and you don't know me, but I was STRICT - all of my friends are awed by how strictly I will follow an eating plan, while they cheat left and right). I deeply regret eating animals again, but I have to take care of me first and other creatures later. Go ahead and despise me for it if you must. Until you've walked in my shoes, you don't know what choices you'd make in order to feel well enough to live a normal life.

Eating more healthy fat (grass fed butter, avocado, coconut, ghee, olive oil), animal protein (grass fed/hormone free whenever possible), and sufficient organic veggies, along with Nature-throid AND additional liothyronine (T3) for my hypothyroidism, has made me feel almost normal again (although it's hard to remember what "normal" actually feels like). But I can get out of bed, go to work all day, and come home not totally wrecked (although not go out dancing all night). For me, that's an improvement.

I'm 56 years old. At 38, while I was at a normal weight and fairly athletic, I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease, an autoimmune disease of the thyroid that causes hyperthyroidism. Long story short, I had my thyroid destroyed by radiation therapy, and now I take supplements to combat hypothyroidism. And I put on 60 pounds in 6 months.

As anyone who is hypothyroid knows, it's darn difficult to lose weight when your thyroid is out of whack. Add menopause to that mix, and I felt I was doomed to be fat for the rest of my life. I've tried or considered every diet under the sun, Atkins, Nutri-systems, vegan, Mediterranean, and in every case, maybe lost some weight while suffering great hunger pangs, and then gained it all back plus some when I couldn't keep it up.

Granted, I've only been doing this for 6 weeks so far, but I am so impressed, because I am never hungry, and the weight is coming off slowly but surely. No counting calories. It's a miracle. Now for me it was a bit easier to make the transition to these foods because I was already eating a plant-based diet. But there are so many recipes given that I should think anyone could find something to like even if weaning off of a meat and dairy based diet.

People will do what they want to do. But if you are curious, or desperate like I was, read the book and see if it resonates with you. Give it a try, what do you have to lose? Like I said, I've only been doing this for 6 weeks, but so far, I have more energy, feel satiated, and have lost 15 lbs. I can't argue with that. I promise I'll come and revise this review if it stops working or if I gain it all back. But somehow I don't think so. I think I've finally found my forever eating plan that is going to help me to achieve and maintain a normal weight for the rest of my life.

This book helps you look at food differently. It is so easy to grasp and break down to utilize in your everyday life. It's so easy. The recipes are very simple. I was able to implement eating this way into my everyday life, I work 40+ hours a week, I also workout 5x a week and still have time to visit friends and go out for social events. I saw an 8 pound drop in less than a month. I was NEVER hungry. I got to eat rice everyday (i love rice, especially brown rice). I actually saved a lot of money on groceries because i was buying whole foods, produce, beans, rice, potatoes etc.
My instant pot is a lifesaver, I bought dry beans in bulk, cooked multiple batches 2-3 times a week, always had some beans with my starches and veggies, excellent! Can't recommend this book enough. For someone looking to get healthy, completely change their life around and REALLY get rid of that stubborn fat that you'll realize isn't so stubborn after following McDougall's program... this is the book for you. No matter what you'll get benefits out of it just by learning a few things about health.

It's an excellent book! After I went vegan in 2009, I quickly and easily returned to the weight I was after finishing basic training in the army at 18 years old. I went vegan for the animals (having already been vegetarian for about thirty years) after my veterinarian told me all the horrible things that happen to virtually ALL of the male chicks in the poulty industry as well as to virtually all male calves and eventually all of the poor cows used for dairy production, too. I went vegan with my next meal.

I got so much flack from friends about being vegan, however, that I started to look into proper nutrition on a vegan diet and found Dr. McDougall. I had already gone down four dress sizes when I watched the documentary "Forks over Knives," but after I saw that film, I stopped eating oil and processed foods and went down two more dress sizes. I have maintained this weight loss for over seven years, which has prompted a lot of people to ask me how I got my health and figure back. Very often people are open to the principles of whole food plant-based meeting, but just do not have the follow through to be disciplined long enough to establish good habits. I bought this book for ideas about how to help my friends get off to a good start on this way of eating. I even found it helpful to myself when I recently had to travel for about six weeks and stay in hotels where I had no access to oil free food - it was hard enough to get vegan food! - and I was shocked at how quickly I gained weight. I have been slowly losing that weight, just living my normal lifestyle eating just whole food vegan no oil foods but decided to give this a try to get rid of the last of the hotel pudge before summer. It really works!
