5.0 étoiles sur 5 Finally, a Kindle Compatible Edition!!! 18 octobre 2009

I just bought this today, and so far, have been impressed. I've been searching for some time to find a Spanish to English dictionary that was Kindle-compatible. All I had to do is change it in "settings" to my default dictionary, and PRESTO (poof!), all my unknown Spanish words were immediately visible just by a flick of the cursor. It is integrated and functions just as the default Kindle dictionary does. (It should be noted by newbie translation dictionary users however: The Spanish language has something like 14 verb tense conjugations, including the conditional, subjunctive, blah, blah, blah. When you are viewing a word in a different tense, you'll receive the "root" word and definition. It might be confusing to you, but persevere, it's how we learn). Overall, this was $6.39 well spent!!!

Just an FYI (on 1/22/11): I see comments and low-star ratings due to non-integration issues on the iPod, iPod Touch and iPad. This review was written in regard to it's integration with the Kindle. The real ACTUAL Kindle. It was written before the iPad even came into retail existence. Users of these other devices need to remember they are not using actual Kindles, but rather Kindle "applications" and should do a little research to see if certain features/options are available before buying. Hopefully, this helps with compatibility disappointments.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Works as advertised, but with a few glitches and not much detail 24 octobre 2009

Once you figure out how to get this dictionary installed correctly (I had to reboot the Kindle, something I didn't even know could be done, before the dictionary appeared as an alternate dictionary) it works just like the default English dictionary. Unlike a paper dictionary,it catches most verb forms converting them to the infinitive (but oddly, doesn't register reflexive forms...i.e. it knows that destruyeron is destruir, but doesn't recognize destruirse), leaves out a fair number of words used by the Spanish newspaper El Pais (i.e. it doesn't do current non-standard usage), and is parsimonious in its definitions, usually limiting them to one word (or several one-word definitions if there are multiple meanings). Since dictionary bulk is no object with a Kindle, it would certainly be nice to have a large, much more complete dictionary.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Kindle Integration, Dictionary is Limited 10 janvier 2010

Integration: The only limitation I experienced was the inability to catch the root verb when one or more object pronouns are attached. Other than that - the integration is excellent. Selecting this new dictionary as the default is simple - with no reboot needed on Kindle 2. Note that I read a post on another site that said one needed to reboot the Kindle.

Dictionary: While reading books designed for students of Spanish (like first and second year) I was disappointed in the number of words that both the dictionary and I did not know.

For the price I find it an OK deal.

I want a more comprehensive dictionary. There are several for sale at MobiPocket. And Amazon owns MobiPocket....

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A second dictionary to build language mastery 28 novembre 2009

Although this Spanish-English dictionary only goes one way--it won't find the Spanish equivalent of an English word--it may open a new avenue to improve your command of Spanish. Once loaded on the Kindle, it can be selected as the 'Primary Dictionary' when you read a Kindle book written in Spanish. When you move the cursor to the beginning of a word in the Spanish text, this dictionary's entry for that word will appear at the bottom of the screen, just as it does when the Kindle's default dictionary is 'Primary.'

There are a number of books in Spanish available for Kindle, including some you may have read in case you want to start where setting, characters and plot are already somewhat familiar.

Ideally for this purpose I'd rather be able to designate an all Spanish dictionary as 'Primary,' but I haven't found any available for Kindle yet. Nor have I found an Italian dictionary of either sort (Italian-English or all Italian) that can function in this integrated way with other books on the Kindle.

FeedbooksDOTorg and gutenbergDOTorg have a number of books (mostly free) in other languages that are not found at Amazon.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 An untested, faulty product not worth the money 17 septembre 2011

This dictionary does work with Kindle, but is far from meeting the basic standards of a product that is being sold to the public.

1. It cannot find definition of verb-pronoun combined words (examples are: casarse, pensandolo, digamelo ...). Since a large proportion of the Spanish verbs are attached by reflective, direct and/or indirect pronouns, this means you will have to rely on another form of dictionary while having this particular dictionary installed, otherwise you will not find definition of a large proportion of verbs.

2. It cannot always identify the correct conjugation of the verb; as a result, it often produces irrelevant definitions based on an incorrect word.

3. A new entry is attached to the contents of the previous entry without a sign of division. Could not figure out why they can't put a division sign between the two separate, unrelated entries. This only shows that the product was not fully tested before going to the market.

4. I can't figure it out either, why it uses only two precious lines to display the definitions. Since most words would need more than two lines to fully define it, you would always need to go to the full dictionary page. This might be okay if Kindle is a very fast machine; unfortunately this is not the case. As a result, you have to wait the full dictionary page to appear, then wait for it to disappear, before you can resume your normal reading.

5. It goes only one-way Spanish-English; since kindles allows only one dictionary at a time, once you assigned it as the default, you lose the ability to do English-Spanish, or English-English.

These are not minor nuisances, which render me a quite unpleasant experience in using the product. I have bought it for 9 months, and was waiting to see it would announce an upgrade to fix some of the bugs. The upgrade has never come. Guess I have way passed Amazon deadline to return it.
