Présentation de l'éditeur

Could Mr Darcy have made a worse proposal at Hunsford? Short answer. Yes.

In this Pride and Prejudice variation, Darcy's parents pass away earlier than canon and his upbringing is supervised by his slightly disreputable uncle, the Earl of Matlock.

Elizabeth and Jane Bennet meet the new tenant of Netherfield when they are involved in an accident. Lizzy couldn't care less about the haughty Mr Darcy: she's more interested in the new physician in town, Dr Gregory. Nor is the very experienced Mr Darcy about to fall for a country chit; but as the local fauna, and her arts and allurements conspire against him, he makes a grave miscalculation. Humor/Angst. Hunsford fork. This story is suitable for mature readers.

"Wow. What a thoroughly fun read this was! I just finished a near binge-read of Via Luton and it is simply exquisite. All the P&P spirit is here and the characters are beautifully drawn. Finally a way for Elizabeth's fine mind and caring sensibilities to shine - through medicine and caring for wounded soldiers. It also serves to improve her sisters by giving them direction and purpose. I liked that Elizabeth had her "cold-feet" moment - brave as she is - and was able to reconcile her fears. A tremendous effort certainly that has humor, intrigue, adult-fun...it's all here. Thank you for bringing this [to] us P&P fans - a good story is always so very welcome"

Biographie de l'auteur

Fredrica Edward grew up in country Australia speaking cant terms straight from the Regency period, which are now disappearing from use due to the globalization of English via television and movies. Her husband teases her on how easily she can still drop into the vernacular if she meets an old timer, but as he once used the word "gammon" in polite conversation - a term only used by highwaymen in Georgette Heyer novels; she pays him no heed. Fredrica spent her summer holidays with her great aunt, a modern miss who learnt to drive a car, and conveyed her husband to the pub once a week when he became too old to get on a horse. Fred first read Pride and Prejudice at fifteen and thought it very entertaining. She next read it at thirty and thought it a work of genius.

This has absolutely one of the worse rip-offs of poor Jane Austen's P&P.
Riddled with modern day speech and expressions, totally unbelievable behavior and circumstances.
Written in language at the level of lower-primary, in poor English and worse grammar. Among the countless incoherences and incomprehensible
points, here are some gems:
"frogs, snails and puppy dog tails" (huh? this is suppose to be P&P!)
"telling porkies"
"fazed"
"determined to go to hell in a handbasket"
Getting a pitchfork out of a small child's foot (does the writer have a notion of what a pitchfork is, and what it's size is?)
Someone saying: "I hope he is feeling better in the morning" (feels? will feel? would be feeling?)
Charlotte Lucas being referred to as a "parvenu". A most unlikely scenario, if one know the real meaning of the word. And Charlotte being a woman, the gender is incorrect. If French is used, do at least use it correctly.
Oh, and Elizabeth checked-mate Darcy, the pronounced chess champion at university, after only some minutes.
The whole book is so ridiculous, all 69 chapters of it! Which I admit, most of I did not read.
I'm noting the writers's name in view of avoiding all and anything she might have or may write.

Good novel, well written plot, believable characters.
However, this is not your average fanfiction.net story. This book contains references to a multitude of Regency / Georgian related stuff, which may (or may not) be interesting to you.
Personally, I loved it; I learnt names for articles of clothing, furniture and make-up :)
It's also a more detailed glimpse into what society would've been like, a society which did indeed include servants, for example. Unlike JA, for whom the servants were merely furniture, Ms Edward describes a much more ballanced day to day life. The same goes for what the gents and the ladies are actually doing with their time. This is a much more nuanced account of how stuff works, it feels a lot more real than JA's own.
I love all this bits of info; they enrich the story without overpowering it.

Lastly, there's a reviewer who didn't really read it (by his/her own admission), but found it in every way horrible. To each their own, I guess.
It's not a bodice reaper. If that's your thing then you should keep looking.

Une belle version alternative d'Orgueil et Préjugés de Jane Austen, en anglais, bien écrite et passionnante. Les personnages sont attachants malgré leurs défauts qui les rendent si humains.
