First, it is the best looking & best built smartwatch. The Frame is made from polished stainless steel with a mineral hardened glass screen and genuine leather strap. That makes for a professional & elegant looking watch that does not look like some plastic toy (like some others out there). The watch is comfortable, durable, and draws a ton of attention. I get compliments on it everyday, and that's before people even realize what it does! The watchband is also changeable (standard 22mm) so you can customize it however you like. The screen is a reflective LCD, which is really unique. It takes a couple days to get used to, but it makes the watch viewable in any lighting from direct sun to a dark room. Again, it's unique and does take some getting used to, but it works really, really well and even has an "invert" mode to display white text on reflected black background or reflective black text on white background. Useful for different lighting conditions. The Frame also has a built in light sensor and gyroscope (tracks movement) which are going to make for some awesome new features in the near future.
As for functionality, MetaWatch has taken a different (and much better) approach to how the watch works. Mainly, it offers interchangeable and constantly updated screen widgets that are displayed on your main screen, without even touching anything. Much like on an Android device. The widgets always display current & forecast weather, calendar events, phone battery level, emails, etc. With some apps available in the Android Play Store (MetaWatch Noah Edition, Augmented Smartwatch Pro) you can expand even more on the options. This allows for many more widgets (unread messages, missed calls, moon phase, current music playing, and more). You can also control your music (great when your phone is plugged into a stereo across the room). In addition to this, it sends notifications from your phone to your watch. With the stock app, you get your messages, email, phone calls, facebook, twitter, snapchat and more*.
**For iOS, use this method to get all notifications to your iPhone -> http://self.ach.al/post/meta-watch -> scroll to the bottom to see how. For Android, use MetaWatch Noah Edition & Augmented Smartwatch Pro for all notifications**
Some of the un-advertised goodies that you can expect (on Android) are turn-by-turn navigation, all Google Now cards, Find Phone, Quick dial, Answer Call, Full calendar & Agenda views, QR code display, and way more. That's on top of the other notifications that go to your phone, which you can select individually or get pretty much all and set different vibration patterns for each app* (use above mentioned apps).
Battery life on the watch is stellar, and of course varies by usage and how many notifications you get. I use my watch a lot, and get about 4-5 days from a full charge to dead. However, it does charge quickly and I usually just charge it for a little while at a time here and there so I never have to worry about it. And it should be mentioned that the screen is always on, just like a normal watch, so you can always glance without turning it on and off. Oh, and it actually saves battery life on your phone because you won't be turning the screen on and off all day long to check messages, time, calendar, etc. So it's a very good trade off.
All in all, MetaWatch has built the best looking watch with the most options and most potential. MetaWatch seems to be the most future proof and by far the best smartwatch available right now, and for the foreseeable future. The support staff and team are, no joke, amazing. If you have a question or suggestion they always get back to you right away and you are speaking to a direct member of the team. They have a lot of new features in store, and I can't wait to see what comes next!
First thing that disappointed me is that the glass of the watch creates a "mirror" effect and that the display cannot be read unless you spend your time to angle your wrist in a way that the mirror effect goes away and you actually see what is in the display. Quick glances are definitely out of question; the watch that "should make your life easier" in actual fact, begins with turning simple tasks difficult.
Now, let's talk about the real low points.
First, you need to update the firmware to suit your mobile phone (iphone 4s in my case).
Good luck with their website which is difficult to navigate and the instruction difficult to find.
Ok, you make it; the watch switches on and you pair it with your phone's bluetooth.
Be prepare to so this operation a good 10 times a day, as it won't stay connected and above all, it won't receonnect automatically despite you select the same named function. Simply it doesn't work. It just needs to leave you phone in a room, go out of range and here you go, you have got a weight at your wrist that is good at nothig but exercising your muscles.
Please note i have become an expert of this watch (before selling it secod hand on ebay 6 months later!), so believe me when i say my watch was perfectly up to date, perfectly set up etc. Now, you think you have got a watch that saves you the time to fish you phone from the jacket to see who is calling? The truth is that when you need it, it is unpaired, so not only you won't see who is calling (and probably miss the call as you still think the watch is connected) , you have to spend a good 5 minutes to reboot your phone and the waych ang go through the settings again.
Other random issues:
Software Updates are non existent. When released they are a joke, ie the new version has more bugs that the one before.
Now hold on for this one, when you are lucky enough and you get a txt and the watch tells you that, you can see just the first 5-6 words of the message, as you can't scroll and see the whole of it! Genious!
Battery indicator is useless, stays 3 days at 100% and thereabouts, and then 3 hours later the watch switches off as the battery has run out.
Sometimes the watch freezes, which means that won't even reboot. You need to connect it to a pc to unfreeze it.
The recharging clip broke in one month, the metal contacts came off, poor design.
I have been sent a replacemet free of charge. The first that arrive was for the wrong model (strata) and didn't fit. Another 2 weeks wait and got the right one, but instead of black it was white. It had the same poor design of the contacts, but i did't keep long enough to see it fail.
Widgets are useless, you have got a chinese calendar, wow, how useful is that?
Don't be deceived, screenshots that display missed calls numbe and unread email number are for android phones, for iphones this function is not available.
the only thing you have got is time, weather and link to your calendar events. Again you cant read more than a few lines, and the rest cannot be visualized, so you'd better input short calendar descriptions, otherwise you'll miss it.
One of the last updates was supposed to introduce a light detection function, which switches the (pitiful) light on automatically at night when you receive a message. Never worked, reinstalled the update 3 times. Simply the usual lame update.
Facebook button "coming soon".... It has been like this for 7 months or more!
I repeat that SEVEN MONTHS, a new meaning of "coming soon"!!
Simply ridiculous. This is the degree of software developement and update frequency you might expect from this company.
Save your 100$, wait a little, and buy the iWatch, or something else that actually works.
Sold the watch on ebay, never regretted for a minute.
I have spent so much time on it and gave it all the chances available, but ultimately, it is a total lemon, perhaps in a pair of year they could make a half decent prodouct, but by then there would be another half dozen better out there.
Eventually I figured out through trial and error that if I compressed the charger against the watch in just the right spot I could get it to get just enough power to show a splash screen and suggest it was starting setup. *Phew* disaster averted, right? Wrong. Third screen I get to tells me to attach the charger to continue. Tried the same trick I had used to get the splash screen to pop up, but no luck. That's as far as I ever got.
I contacted the company support email, which sent back an automated response immediately. 4 days later I hadn't heard anything so I sent a reply to the initial automated response. Got a reply back shortly thereafter telling me they had ceased doing business and no longer offered personal support.
I checked the webpage again. Nothing looked out of sorts. No message saying "sorry, we're out of business". Dug through a couple of links which all looked like they were up and running. Then I get to the FAQ page and I found one answer to one question saying, in effect, "sorry we are no longer offering support". Another question about a replacement charger stated that they were currently out of stock. No mention anywhere that the reason they are out of stock of chargers and no longer providing support is because they are out of business.
Do NOT buy a watch from this company. The company is dead, defunct, kaput. You will get no updates, support, replacement parts or new features ever. They're gone. But amazingly you can still buy their products like some dishonest zombie business.
