5.0 étoiles sur 5 40% into the book, already got my money's worth 23 mai 2014

A very lucid and helpful overview. A healthy mix of step-by-step instruction and conceptual overview. And this is actually a perfect reference for a SQL Server engine guy like myself - helping bridge to the new world. It was worth the price after only a few chapters.

This book is exactly what it says it is and it would be very useful to technical and (informed) business managers. Provides enough information to get in enough trouble (if you know nothing) and probably to set up an environment (if you can set up a server).

I got a lot out of it and I am now trying to get in trouble.

Big data is evolving at break neck speed, so it is really hard for printed books on the subject to keep up, a lot of the information in the book still valid but a lot of it is dated, for instance it is missing the two major additions that came after the book like the new APS (Analytics Platform System) and the new Azure ML, on the positive side the book is pretty comprehensible and easy to navigate, albeit pretty verbose; the almost 400 pages could be easily cut in half without loosing any significant meaning, another minor issue is in chapter 3 the table script is missing from the downloaded code and it is a pain to type, so here it is for anybody who needs it:

CREATE EXTERNAL TABLE flightinfo (
Year int,
Month int,
DayOfMonth int,
DayOfWeek int,
DepTime int,
CRSDepTime int,
ArrTime int,
CRSArrTime int,

FlightNum int,

ArrDelay int,
DepDelay int,

TaxiIn int,

Cancelled int,
Cancellationcode string,
Diverted string,
CarrierDelay int,
WeatherDelay int,
NASDelay int,
SecurityDelay int,
LateAircraftDelay int) ROW FORMAT DELIMITED FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' LOCATION '/user/administrator/flightinfo';

myinput =LOAD 'wordcount/davinci.txt' USING TextLoader();
words = FOREACH myinput GENERATE FLATTEN(TOKENIZE($0));
grouped = GROUP words BY \$0;
counts = FOREACH grouped GENERATE GROUP,COUNT(words);
ordered = ORDER counts BY \$0;
STORE ordered INTO 'output/pigout' USING PigStorage;

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A tour of Hadoop, plus some Microsoft technology 16 mai 2015

The overall impression is positive, but it's not five stars as a book or as an investment. What the existing reviews neglect to say is that 90% of "Microsoft Big Data Solutions" is Hadoop. (Thus, a really useful review would compare this particular Hadoop book against other Hadoop books. Alas, I am not up to the task). The 10% of Microsoft-specific content includes:
(a) a 30-page chapter on SQL Server PDW (since 2014 part of Microsoft Analytics Platform System),
(b) a 10-page walk through installing Hortonworks Data Platform on Windows,
(c) a 15-page look (with content split, and to some extent duplicated, across two distant chapters) at Azure and HDInsight,
(d) an extract-data-from-Hadoop-using-Hive exercise - also repeated, and in one case seguing into a showcase of Power BI tools.
I could not accompany the book on its journey through (b) - HDP for Windows requires a Windows Server OS, and I only have Windows 7 – and this blocked me from attempting the book's subsequent Hadoop exercises. Now, I have set up the virtual-machine version of HDP, but that recent possibility is not featured in the book, so I will need to make use of Hortonworks online resources to progress there. I will do the same, i.e. use online resources, now from Microsoft, for Azure and HDInsight, and I would do the same for PDW/APS. A specialized book on Hadoop (most likely Hive), plus online references, looks to me like the the best path. “Microsoft Big Data Solutions” deserves considerable credit, but shows its age and generally does not strike me as a necessity.
