Présentation de l'éditeur

For years Jacob Christianson struggled to reconcile his faith with his skepticism about the polygamous practices of his religious community. That doubt, combined with a sharp analytical mind, enabled him to solve the ritualistic murder of his cousin at the hands of bloodthirsty fundamentalists within their own church. Now, those experiences have captured the attention of the FBI, who come to Jacob with an unusual request: infiltrate a millennialist cult and extract the undercover agent who has fallen off the radar. Jacob reluctantly agrees, but it doesn’t take long to realize that his mission will be easier said than done. Impatient and unwilling to heed Jacob’s warnings, the FBI closes in, forcing a power play with the dangerous cultists—with Jacob and his family caught squarely in the middle. Tense and engaging, Mighty and Strong offers “an in-depth ride into a world few have entered,” a page-turning foray into the realm of religious extremists and the lengths to which they will go to defend their beliefs.

This book is so well written, I like the way Michael Wallace develops his story and sets his scenes so you want to know what will happen next. There are twists and surprises ahead. His characters are well written and described. I am a great fan of Michael Wallace and look forward to the next in the series of these books.

As an historian, I was drawn to Wallace's subject. I liked the first book better than the second. Being a Utahn, I found the scene changes to be slightly confusing, but the story line is compelling. Though it is fictional and a mystery, I wonder how the various facets of Mormonism view his work. I've found that it takes very little to be viewed as pejorative by these religious communities. One thing is certain, the truth is often stranger than fiction, and it's hard to process and forget. Wallace's stories remind me of Tony Hillerman's style, completely off the reservation. :-)

Mr. Wallace does a great job developing characters and storylines. I am enjoying this series of books and am reading them in order as there are elements that one needs to know from previous books. I think it might have been a little lacking if I hadn't read the first book. I don't recommend it as a stand alone book.

I was disappointed in the way the main character's wife handles her situation. I just couldn't buy that she would handle the things the way it was written. I won't say more b/c I don't believe in spoilers in reviews.

I am a person who shuns conversations on religion and politics. So I'm not going to write my views here about what I think of the religious denomination that figures in the book. All I'm going to say is that I enjoy reading this book/series.

Although the individual books can stand on their own, I think it's better if one read it as a series; not so certain though as I've read only 2 so far. Nothing preachy at all. The stories espouse both the good and the bad. I guess the attraction, for a Catholic like myself, is the opportunity to learn about backgrounds that are foreign to me. Coupled with all the right storytelling elements, this series might be a keeper.

This was a wonderful read, and just as one viewer mentioned, I could hardly bring myself to put my Kindle down and get to bed at a decent hour once I started it. The characters from the preceding book are likeable and well-developed. The plot is just gritty enough to keep my interest throughout. The bad guys are truly evil and the good guys are imperfect, but earnest.... just the right combination.

It is clear to me that the two negative reviews of this book were done by people who did not bother to actually read the book in any complete way. These detractors have nothing to say about the actual content of the book, but merely give a knee-jerk reaction to its cover and general subject: polygamy. They feel a need to defend their church, when no such defense is needed. The author takes great pains to present mainstream Mormons positively: genuine, sympathetic and trying devoutly to find a spiritual existence. Yes, they are also imperfect, but that is absolutely true in real life. He certainly does not bash the LDS church. He never intimates that current LDS people are polygamists.

I look forward to the next book by this author.
