Chris Willard's workbook is a welcome addition to the current mindfulness skills resources for teens. As a psychologist working with adolescents with anxiety issues, I know my clients are in need of engaging and accessible skills for managing their difficulties. Dr. Willard's book is written is a very straightforward, non-jargon style and is provides young readers a broad range of mindfulness learning tools. Mindfulness skills have been clearly shown by research to benefit a wide range of people and difficulties, including anxiety, but often these skills seem steeped in religious overtones or in meditative techniques which many teens would shy away from. Willard's workbook brings these skills within reach of a wide swatch of kids. Their parents as well will find this book useful as a resource for understanding and assisting their child through the process of learning to manage their anxiety. Teens want to carve out their own path as they move from childhood toward adulthood. A workbook such as this allows young people the capacity to craft their own self-management identity, with less stigma and dependence on others.

In a reassuring, accessible style, Dr. Willard helps the reader understand what anxiety is, where it comes from, and most important, what to do about it -- with a rich, varied collection of mindfulness exercises teens can use to reduce their anxiety during family arguments, while taking a test or giving a presentation at school, before going out on a date or using social media, and in dozens of other everyday situations. Drawing on his experience as both a psychologist and a practitioner of mindfulness meditation, Dr. Willard has created a powerful, practical resource not only for the millions of anxious teens out there, but also for the parents, therapists, counselors, and educators who care about them.

Dr. Willard's most recent book, Mindfulness for Teen Anxiety, is extremely useful in my private practice as a psychologist. I work with many young adults (and adults of all ages!) who have found the exercises in the book to be helpful in managing their anxiety and stress. I appreciate that the book offers such a blend of approaches that all fit within the larger umbrella of mindfulness: readers learn about anxiety and mindfulness through clear and concise psycho-education sections; and then can gain tools that help them identify, challenge, and shift unhelpful thought patterns (CBT); understand the physical manifestations of anxiety and begin to ground and support themselves in their body, as well as release tension physically; understand multiple forms that anxiety can take and ways that it can manifest as anger or acting-out; identify personal strengths that support coping strategies to manage anxiety effectively; and learn a range of simple and effective meditation techniques, from following the breath to self-compassion. It is especially helpful that Dr. Willard breaks down these techniques into exercises to practice in specific situations (e.g. social, school, home, etc), especially as young adults often crave specific tools to help them across the different contexts and arenas of their lives. My experience is that, once practicing these tools in specific situations, clients can often generalize the skills to other areas of their lives. The writing is clear, grounded, and easy to understand, without being simplistic. The tone is authentic, informal, and open, while remaining serious. Clear instructions are given throughout, both for the therapist and the client, so that you can guide clients through meditations and exercises, or they can practice on their own. My personal favorite is the snow globe meditation - very helpful in allowing thoughts to be as they are, and watching them settle as one steps back from attaching to or rejecting them. This workbook is an essential tool for anyone working with teens and young adults - and, I would argue, for anyone working with clients who struggle with anxiety!

I love this book and more importantly, several teens (ages 16, 17 and 19) I know love and appreciate this book. It's never condescending, and beautifully combines humor and brevity in its style with excellent advice and strategies.

In a society where children and youths are engaged in “programmed” sports activities and competitive games (with associated performance anxiety) and are devoting a large amount of their time to computer games and texting, there is very little time for self-reflection,or for engaging in unstructured relaxation-mindfulness types of activities. Dr. Willard’s user friendly book, “Mindfulness for teen anxiety: a workbook for overcoming anxiety at home, at school, and everywhere,”presents many easy to implement scenarios of various mindfulness exercises to help people appreciate “slowed time experience” and associated self reflection and capacity for experiencing relaxation and coping with “anxiety’ that children and youths often feel in our modern times. I think the book will be helpful to teens, counselors, and parents alike for practicing mindfulness exercises for coping with everyday experience of anxiety, and the book, I believe, is an useful addendum to “self-help” series of books available to general public.
