I really enjoyed this book, I had many late nights from not wanting to put it down. The storyline was great, I was sure I'd figured out what was happening then there was a twist which left me guessing once again and wondering what would happen next. Some books go into far to much detail with the sexual scenes and it becomes common and expected but in this book it's written so that you are the one filling in on the details as you imagine them to be. Really don't have one bad word for the author. Looking forward to reading your other books !

A gifted copy was provided for an honest review by author, Cynthia Eden, through NetGalley.

3 Simple Stars!
The Review:
This was a quick read that was filled with a mysterious "who done it" feel with intense characters and an interesting story. And though I liked it well enough to give it three stars, I just didn't get any tingly feelings for the characters or a strong love of the story itself. It was just so-so for me and fell a little short.

Skye Sullivan walks into Trace Weston's private security office needing help. She hasn't seen him for ten years but she's desperate because she thinks she's being followed, and has been for a while, possibly even going back to the night of her crash which resulted in an injury where she could no longer dance professionally. She's reluctant to go to Trace because they used to be friends and lovers, until the day he told her he never wanted to see her again.

The initial meet is intense and full of longing looks and alpha male goodness. The moment we meet Trace, you know he's going to be a yummy handful. Skye is a bit timid but she has reason to be. The last time she saw him, he rejected her out of the blue and told her to get out of his life. So the tension is immediate and sets the stage for a lovely push-pull relationship filled with doubt and hurt.

But immediately, Trace wants back into her life now that's she's come to him for help and he's willing to do anything to keep her there.

With a mounting list of suspects from Skyes past lovers, it's anyone's guess as to who the guilty party is. Everyone suspects everyone and the suspicion is even thrown towards Skye at one point as parts of her past are revealed.

Though all this buildup makes the story and characters interesting and I read straight through to the last page, when I was done, I just didn't feel any strong connection to the read. I also thought the logic behind Trace leaving Skye was a bit cowardly. He wanted to get his life straight, become something more, so that if she ever came back, he would be ready. But we get the sense Skye is this fragile thing and Trace is this tough alpha. After all his success, he should have gone after her, done anything to win her back. The conflict just didn't make much sense to me and it could have if there had been more details, more story, more history to fall back on.

Also, you have these highly trained security people, at least one who's been in Black Ops and are supposed to be the best in the business but they get foiled by.... the stalker. I won't name who it was, but really? How did this get past them?

The Wrap Up:
This read fell a bit flat for me. I wanted to rate it higher because I didn't dislike it but I couldn't give it more than three stars because I didn't love it either. Maybe if there had been more history with the characters such as flashbacks or even some idea of what happened to them while they were together, how they moved on from being friends to lover to ex's, then I might have cared more about their situation. Either way, it wasn't a miss but it wasn't a hit either.

After reading this book I got the impression that I didn’t really know the characters. Yes, Skye, the lead female character was a great dancer and yes, she had a rough and poor childhood but, what else do I know about Skye? Not much besides her ex-lovers and her absolute love and trust for the main character. The same happens with the male character and that really bothers me. Ok, he was an army guy with a very secret profile but, in my opinion, that’s not a reason to totally ignore his past and his current life. I would have enjoyed knowing more about his business, his past love life, friends or likes and dislikes. Everything seemed to be rushed.

This is the second book I have read by this author and I think I am giving up on her. It is not that her books are bad, because they are not. However, when I read a book I expect to feel attached to the characters and that it’s not the case with Ms. Eden’s books.

I didn't like either of the main characters. I thought that Trace was Alpha Male that went too far - in a creepy scary kind of way. I thought that Skye was wimpy and needy. I didn't care who was stalking her and I didn't really want to see her with Trace. I wanted her to get a backbone and dump everyone and start fresh. I am a lover of romance but I didn't think this was romantic at all. It was almost disturbing how messed both these characters are. Not my cup of tea....

While I enjoy a "bodice ripper" as much as the next person, I have an issue with "love" scenes where the female character is taken against her will, where she says no, tries to push the man away, but ultimately acquiesce when she is overcome by desire. We live in a world that is teaching young men that a woman "really wants it," but just needs a strong man to take her. By my definition that is rape and I find nothing romantic or sexy about it.

This book definitely had me guessing on what was going to happen next. I was on edge trying to figure out who the real stalker was and who Skye should be trusting. I wasn't positive on who the bad guy was until his name was being spoken as confirmation. I had a feeling but was kept unsure right up until the moment it was revealed.

The alpha male of this book, Trace, is pretty intense. It could have a lot to do with the fact that I didn't know whether or not I could actually trust him. So instead of being so sure that he was doing everything to protect Skye I was trying to pick apart everything that he said and did to get any sort of clue as to whether or not he was the good guy or bad guy. Was he crazy or sincere?

The love story between Skye and Trace is pretty difficult. They both really have no idea just how much they care about each other because they have done their best to put those feelings to the side. Self preservation being the reason for trying to ignore the hole that they each left in the other's heart. He walked away so that she could have her dream, when she would have given that dream up to have him.

So not only are they trying to keep Skye safe and alive, they now have the tension of trying to figure each other out added to the mix. Trying to decide what went wrong so many years ago that they couldn't make it work and if they could make it work now.

The book is told in both first person and third person point of view, this totally threw me off in some parts. I am not sure if this is the first book that I have ever read that was set up like that but it is the first book that I have ever noticed it in. I found it difficult for my brain to switch from one point of view to the next. This is totally a personal preference issue so it may not even bother anyone else but me.

I really wanted more from Trace and Skye, with it being short there is not much time to develop an emotional connection to the character. I loved reading a romantic suspense though, this could be a new addiction. Being a novella this is a great quick read and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a lot of time but wants to read something exciting.
