Présentation de l'éditeur

The Moon Under Water By Lynne Barrett-Lee

What would you do if you suddenly discovered that your husband had been lying to you for years?

Happily married, with two teenage sons, Alex Taylor considers herself lucky. And when she hears her childhood friend Cathy has died, she finds herself counting her blessings. She’s also surprised that she’s been left a bequest. They lost touch with one another almost twenty years ago. Why would Cathy remember her now?

She really can’t imagine but she’s about to find out, because she’s been left something else – something that changes everything. It’s a letter confessing to the two year affair Cathy had with Alex’s husband, Sam. ‘But it’s history,’ he entreats. ‘It’s long over. It meant nothing.’ Surely Alex can forgive and forget?

Should she? And can she? She’s not at all sure. But it looks like she won’t be allowed to. Because it seems Cathy’s left them a third thing as well. A teenage daughter. Who wants to come and find her father.

The Moon Under Water is a novel about secrets, and the ripples that spread when they are suddenly exposed. It’s also about how betrayal not only re-writes the past - it has the power to also re-write the future...

HASH(0x91467e64) étoiles sur 5 h working to save her marriage....alone... 26 août 2013

I have read a lot of cheating books but I have never read one where the h apologizes more to a cheating H. Every other paragraph was an "I'm sorry" from her. It was nauseating, absolutely insane.

The h finds out that the H had an affair years ago with her best friend that lasted two years. Now the best friend is dead and the H and h are left with the reality that the H fathered a child with the other woman. I expected the H to at any point and time feel completely horrid for his behavior but that never happens. When the h attempts to wrap her mind around the affair the H refuses to give her any information or talk about it repeatedly saying "what's the point?" He decides that is how they are going to deal with it, "end of." Who cares what she wanted or needed? Shortly there after, the H takes a why-can't-you-just-get-over-it attitude with the h. Every time she attempts to talk about her feelings he says things to her like "Please. Just get off my back" and "God, not again Alex!" Those are direct quotes, not exaggerations. I could not believe an author would write that of a H that was supposedly feeling remorse for a two year affair. He was over it therefore she should as well. He behaves in this unbelievably selfish manner the entire book. I found no redeeming qualities in him.

The h is constantly apologizing for her feelings that his infidelities caused over and over again throughout the whole book. The only logical conclusion that I found was that the author wrote such an unredeemable H that the only manner to make him a bit less repulsive is to attempt to make the h seem guilty of something. Yet this h held the H's hand the same night that she found out about his affair and child. The same h that had opened her home to the living reminder of the infidelity. He recognized how difficult the situation would be for her yet still demanded that she set her feeling aside and support him and accept the daughter conceived in his betrayal, no matter how painful it was for her. Somehow she was made into the villain by him and all her friends for needing a little support herself during such a difficult time. Then when she finally speaks up and tells him that it would be too painful for her to pretend that everything is ok at that right now, instead of feeling guilty for putting her in that situation his reaction is ""Fine," he barked, "Whatever. Don't come, then."" No worries, the h apologizes for that too. The h never considered leaving her husband, never considered a divorce and she fought tooth and nails to get through the painful betrayal all by herself with no love or support from a H that was so busy building a relationship with his new daughter that he never considered his wife. I am still asking myself, what did he do to reassure her?

***Spoiler*** In the end, the h apologizes for having any doubt that the H didn't love her after hearing that he had a two year affair with her best friend and for being so hurt that she could not make things easier for him. This is where he realizes how much his actions have hurt her and that he doesn't deserve her or her apologies, right? Nope. He accepts her apology and doesn't give one of his own. At this point I wanted to finish reading the book to see if World War II was the h fault too and if she was also going to apologize for that as well. I got this book free and since I can't get my money back, I want my reading time back.

I really wanted to love it,but to be honest it lacked for me. First for me I really needed a bit more from the cheating husband. I hated how we didn't really see him suffering guilt, etc instead he was angry that she couldn't let it go. for the wife it was fresh and new, even though it was years her it's the present. and for for me :2 years is a long affair, and no matter what he says, emotions had to be involved.he was deluding himself to think it was just about s3x and that the gal wasn't wanting him to leave his wife. It's why for me I needed his pov or to see him really seem sorry, instead he seemed angry that she was upset, and very cold and uncaring as to the damage he has done to her and his family. As readers, we saw no regret,no tears no fear that wife would leave him, etc.

If it would have had some of his pov or he REALLY seemed sorry it would have been highly rated and recommended to my reading group. as written for me:it's a 1.5 star book.

HASH(0x9149a418) étoiles sur 5 Badgers, Cheatin' Husbands and the Road to Forgiveness 29 août 2013

This is a book about infidelity, not immediate, lost in the lust moment infidelity but the belated effects of an affair and it's consequences that took place almost 20 years earlier. This is a book about how a woman who thought she had everything and perfect marriage with a perfect guy for her finds her happy life shattered and somehow has to find a way to move on.

If you have no tolerance for infidelity, do not read this book. If you have a curiosity to follow the journey to put a marriage back together from the viewpoint of the betrayed woman, you will really like this book.

This might be kinda spoilery so please read on with caution if you don't want to know .............................

This book is only told in the heroine's pov. Since she is the betrayed one and the one who has to ultimately decide to make the marriage work or divorce and move on, the single pov is remarkably effective for moving through the plot of the story. You can be convinced or doubt right along with the heroine and it makes a very riveting tale. How many times have we all seen a marriage destroyed because of a thoughtless affair and unexpected child? What happens if the betrayed spouse chooses a different path and how do you get to forgiveness after such a devastating experience like having your husband involved in an affair with your best friend and the best friend has a child from it?

What do badgers have to do with anything? Actually, the badgers are a symbol of the roadblocks in front of the heroine preventing her from moving on in her life. (Plus I had to put them in the review cause they are spectacled badgers and I like that.) It is the underlying symbolism that once the heroine can find a solution for the badgers, she can find a solution for her life choices. Fortunately with great compassion, a leap of faith and a humbling amount of forgiveness the heroine does manage to get her life and her choices going a positive direction. She can never go back to the place she was but she has learned that with grace and kindness she can get to someplace better.

That is ultimately the big message in this book, that with love and a certain amount of mental meltdown, forgiveness is possible and even the biggest transgressions can be forgiven. It all depends on how one views the situation and what one values. This story is a journey about understanding and a travel guide to one way to get back to a happy marriage. It isn't easy and not everyone agrees on the outcome or the methods but it is the beauty of this story.

Betrayals happen everyday, a lot of times with unpleasant reminders and permanent consequences, it is so rare to find a funny and well written story that really plumbs the depths of what it takes to move on and rebuild a marriage that this book is a treasure and it is even better with badgers.

I did like this book, although not enough to read it again. The main character, Alex, was just too unknowing. I understand her situation, but seriously, her best friend would NOT have that attitude. Her husband? Meh. And the badger situation did not end the way I thought it should. But then, I like badgers.

A moving story of how past secrets can rock a seemingly perfect marriage, but also how true love really can conquer all.
