I know, it's not even February yet.

Apparently modern-day, melodically-twisted psychedelia conjured up by a single person not only exists outside of Perth, Australia but exists without the capable aesthetics of Kevin Parker (who knew?) in Topanga Canyon. Sorry to Morgan Delt but I’m not the first to utter your name in the same sentence containing “Tame Impala“. From me, it’s a huge compliment.

Where Kevin Parker stirs up early Todd Rundgren, obviously loves Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, and Jimi Hendrix guitar riffs (Bold Arrow of Time) after about 5 consecutive listens to Morgan Delt’s self-titled album I heard Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, a touch of Faust’s collage work, what little I know of early Kinks or the Byrds; “Mr. Carbon Copy” harkens to the early Who. (And I didn’t find it a stretch to follow up my 5 listens with Spirit’s “Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus”.) Like Kevin Parker, Mr. Delt takes a genre belonging to another era and brings a fresh ear to the sound. The two will coexist harmoniously in my library as they should in others.

While the aforementioned "Mr. Carbon Copy" was the first cut to hit repeat for me every song is a well-constructed gem—I haven't had to skip over any; wearing headphones it's been a pleasure catching the instrumentations, tempo changes, and textures he manages to weave together in an average span of 3 minutes. The song "Tropicana" earns a special mention given its melding of soaring guitar, bah bah bahs, piano tinks, harpsichord interlude, and obvious synth drums. This is the type of album younger siblings will recall being influenced by an older sibling in a future world :-)

I look forward to a future where out-takes are leaked and new gems are revealed. 5+ stars.

Its hard to revisit the past without coming across as a copycat or revivalist. My first example would be the pretty good Jacco Gardner album Cabinet of Curiosities . It is the kind of album that by the first track you can tell the guy knows his 60s whimsical psyche ala Syd's early Pink Floyd tracks and is doing his best to recapture the feeling and sounds of those times. And he does it so well that one almost could be fooled that it was some long lost album from the summer of love . But that steadfast attention to detail and honoring the past can work against you. Ultimately what you get is a recreation or homage without the relevance of the era. It is too obvious and even worse truly unoriginal. I like that album because I just pretend it really is from 1967 and the songs are good and it hits every button of the psychedelic pop expectation chart- but in the end I feel a sense of disappointment for this very reason.

Then there's this album by Morgan Delt which has obvious influences from the psychedelic era- yes even Syd's early Floyd tracks can be heard here as well. The difference however is Delt has masked this more creatively through incorporating a full arsenal of modern effects- synths crazy guitar effects and ever changing arrangements . One can hear snippets of the flaming lips, tame impala, air , black moth super rainbow , etc so Delts version of psychedelic music is also deeply tied to the bands who have adopted the modern blueprint. The tracks here which are all excellent manage to walk the fine line between this modern take and the 60s aesthetic of classic psych pop. Delt also comes across as far more relevant and more creative. The buried treated vocals go from soft and pretty to flanged out weirdness- the guitars chug and ring out and then disappear into backwards noise and random tempo shifts. The songs sound familiar and alien at once and there's quite a bit of "caught offguard" moments which is always a good thing in my opinion. While Tame impala is likely the best comparison this is a far more risky and challenging affair and has more attitude and originality behind it. Track 4 Mr Carbon copy is the best example of this- a tour de force that must make Kevin Parker sleep uneasy. The only downfall I can find is the short duration clocking in at around 33 minutes.

In summary if you're a fan of the bands mentioned or of classic 60s psychedelic pop you cant go wrong. In fact I doubt you will find a better album all year.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 pop music from the vibrations of happily confused chemical Gods 8 juillet 2014

Los Angeles artist debut—avant-noise hallucinatory pop/rock with backward guitar oscillations tripping over buried melodies that are equal parts harmony and distortion. There are some gorgeous pop hooks hidden here, peeking out from experimental prog-rhythm corners and holding their breath beneath the flow of unbridled psychedelic sound-loop froth. The songs have a strange, murky thickness hovering over the back of melody. Sometimes recalls bands like Tame Impala, Pond, Mmoss, Temples, Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd. Whatever drugs were involved in making this must have come from the vibrations of happily confused chemical Gods. And if it was a drug-free environment, well…Wow! Ultimate tripping music.

this album is very good. I love the batch of people doing the psych pop thing really well. kind of like "if we could of been back there, we would of done it better" thing. it is pretty faithful to the sound, though you can still hear the indie pop. the songwriting is very good, it is warped drugged out pop fun, it is listenable and strange at the same time, which always makes for good listening. if you like stuff like sid era floyd and trippy 60s pop or music from any period, you will really like it.

As I sit next to my pile of sandwich trash candy wrappers and chips I can't really think of anything to say about this album that the cosmos hasn't said already. Putting words together to describe what you may think is your own personal world view is as futile as it is furtive. What if I were like a tree? Or maybe some bits of plastic? Would that be boring? Who cares? I'm going to bike ride. Peece
