5.0 étoiles sur 5 Reissued And Remastered On CD At Last!!! 8 janvier 2011

The Motels' 1979 and 1980 albums, 'The Motels' and 'Careful', have been due a reissue treatment for many, many years. The original CD pressings from the early '90s have long been out of print and have been fetching huge bucks. In late 2010, BGO Records (Beat Goes On Records) out of England finally gave The Motels' first two albums a much needed upgrade on one CD! Unlike some other independent labels based out of the U.K., BGO actually went the extra mile here by using the original master tapes from Capitol Records! Some labels use vinyl transfers or previous CD issues and remaster from there due to the cost of either hunting down the original master tapes or the cost involved in transferring from the original masters. Best of all, the remastered audio is beautiful and very well done! Mastering credits go to Andrew Thompson at Sound Performance, London, 2010. Those complaining about "loudness wars" will be happy to know that the audio has not been mastered far too loud. It is also not flat. I think that it is just about perfect. The audio quality is a major upgrade from the 20 year old original CD pressings.

In addition to excellent sound, BGO have provided stunning packaging and liner notes. The package includes a slipcase cover for the jewel case, a surprise bonus when I received my copy in the mail. Various photos from both album projects are included in addition to both original credits and reissue credits. Informative liner notes by John Tobler and song lyrics make the booklet a winner. Some labels tend to go really cheap with these kind of reissues due to lower budgets. BGO gets my utmost respect for caring about the music and for presenting a wonderful reissued package.

The Motels' first two albums spawned a handful of hits around the world. "Total Control", from the band's self-titled first album, made the Australian Top 5, the French and New Zealand Top 20, and the U.S. "Bubbling Under" Top 10 tally in late 1979/early 1980. 'Careful', on the other hand, yielded the band even more success in late 1980/early 1981. "Danger" made the Top 20 in France and the Top 40 in New Zealand, whereas both "Whose Problem?" and "Days Are OK" just missed the U.K. Top 40, peaking at #42 and #41, respectively. The Motels' first two albums were a stepping stone to much greater success. In 1982, the band would find its greatest success with 'All Four One' and in 1983 would repeat similar success with 'Little Robbers'. Both albums spawned numerous hit singles, including "Only The Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer". BGO reissued and remastered both albums in a 2-disc collection, All Four One/Little Robbers, in 2009.

I love when labels get reissues right! Nice job, BGO! Highly recommended!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Finally! The First Two Albums Remastered and Reissued! 17 décembre 2010
Par whitechocolatebrotha - Publié sur
"Motels" featuring "Total Control" and "Celia" and the incredibly moody sophomore set, "Careful" in full, glorious remastered sound! It only took thirty-one years! Also, for a more in-depth review of "Careful," check out my review under THAT CD if you're interested in exploring one of the premiere 80's New Wave turned Pop bands of that decade and also, check out The Motels' other recently remastered/reissued two-fer of their 1982 & 1983 albums, "All Four One" and "Little Robbers." They're just as excellent (although geared more toward Pop audiences) and the sound quality is inCREDIBLE! Now all we need is a final twofer which might combine the Motels' fifth album, "Shock" with Martha's solo album, "Policy" on CD. Capitol, u listenin'?

The Motels were a great band from the LA scene in the early 80's when bands like "The Knack" opened doors for other talented LA bands. These are the first 2 LP's and is some of their best work. They would hit it big on their 3rd release, "All 4 One," and also release 2 other releases which were more commercially relevant but not as good.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 "...Closets And Bullets..." - Motels and Careful by THE MOTELS (2010 Beat Goes On CD Remasters) 12 janvier 2015
Par Mark Barry - Publié sur
For years now 2002's paltry 10-track "Classic Masters" CD was the only way to get half-decent remasters of The Motels hits (transferred by Robert Vosgien) from their great run of albums between 1979 and 1985. Well along comes Beats Goes On of England to rescue the day. They've gathered up the band's first 4 albums on to two CD sets and these new 2009/2010 Remasters sound cool (accompanied by ace packaging too). Here are the drive-in details...

Tracks 11 to 20 are their 2nd album "Careful" - released July 1980 in the USA on Capitol ST-12070 and in the UK on Capitol E-ST 12070

The outer card slipcase that comes as standard with BGO CD reissues now gives the whole thing a classy feel. The 20-page booklet has great liner notes by noted writer and music nut JOHN TOBLER, photos of the band and principal songwriter Martha Davis and all the lyrics too. But the really big news is ANDREW THOMPSON remasters from original tapes licenced from Capitol. The audio quality is fabulous throughout and when the band rocks like on "Envy" - you really feel it.

Sort of America's answer to Blondie - The Motels blend of sussed Pop and catchy New Wave anger saw their five albums chart in the USA and have been held in affection ever since. They'd been around since the early Seventies before they signed to Capitol and made sure their opening gambit was chock full of tunes to be noticed. The debut opens with the wickedly catchy "Anticipating" with its New Wave guitars and piano and it's the first time you get to hear the driving force in the band - Californian Martha Davis who wrote all the songs ("Total Control" and "Dressing Up" were co-written with band's great guitarist Jeff Jourard). Davis sounds like a female Elvis Costello/glamorous Patti Smith, all snarling-siren and street-smart, fronting a bunch of Punk Rockers who can actually play her slyly affecting tunes (they took their name from the seedy motels on the Boulevard). The remaster on "Kix" allows the wild guitars free rein while "Total Control" sounds like something of the first Cars album. Another rave of mine from the debut is "Counting" which has that jagged beat that builds and builds (it's a bit hissy but still sounds great).

But for me things took off big time with the 2nd LP "Careful" from 1981 after Jeff Jourard was replaced on guitar with the tremendous axework/songwriting talent of Tim McGovern (ex The Pop). It opens with "Danger" - another clever Cars-like chugger (production values massively improved over the debut) - but things go Punk/New Wave genius with "Envy" - the first of two written by McGovern. I've loved this track for decades - and you can even hear Paul Weller's solo sound in the way it rocks out towards the end. Things go full-on Pop with the brill "Bonjour Baby" written by keyboard player Marty Jourard and Bass Player Michael Goodroe. This cool duo also penned "Careful" and "Cry Baby" - more hits with surgically economical New Wave guitar parts. The witty "Whose Problem?" sounds like the daughter of "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" from Joe Jackson's "Look Sharp" album - great stuff and as catchy as a cold in January...

The Motels would go on to more success with the albums "All Four One" (1982) and "Little Robbers" (1983) - the other CD in this reissue set. Love it...
