Two weeks in the hot Texas sun. Small town sheriff story with a difference. And the difference makes all the difference, adding a depth such tales rarely have. Okay, it's not delving deeply into a character's psyche, but its light-hearted approach gives balance and takes the edge off observations on some effects of the bipolar condition (heretofore called manic depression). There is nothing depressing about the telling of this story and the muffin touch produced a neat ending. The setting and locals were well enough described to make me NOT want to go to Texas in summer (or ever?). Another kindle good read I gratefully picked up for free.

John Lawson, the sheriff of Bolero, Texas has two mysteries to solve. First there is a series of crimes surrounding the cover up of the collapse of the local high school and secondly, why has his father returned to town after abandoning the family 24 years ago. The crimes eventually gets solved with no real surprise in store but the circumstances surrounding what the father has been up to all these years and why he comes back to Bolero really never comes to a conclusion.

While the book was interesting enough to keep me wanting to find out what was going to happen, in the end it fell flat for me. The characters really weren't very interesting and there is no sense of place other than numerous mentions of how hot it is in Texas. This novel could have been set in Minnesota just as well and it would have made little difference. There is just no atmosphere at all. Finally, there is the talking muffin that weaves its way through the story and gives the book it title of Muffin Man. I simply do not get this part of the story at all.

Normally if I story doesn't grab me in the first chapter, out it goes. I don't have to slog through bad fiction if I don't want to--I'm not in school anymore.

At first, "Muffin Man" was on the "toss it out list". It just didn't grab me. I liked the characters well enough, was familiar with the locale, but just didn't see how this was going to keep me interested. So I put it down for a day or so. Funny thing was, I kept wondering to myself, "Okay, what's next?". So I'd read another chapter or less, put it down, and find myself wondering again, "Okay, now what?" I kept doing this over and over until I had finished the book!

Even now, I'm not sure I really liked it but it still leaves me wondering, "Okay, wonder where this could go in a future novel....."

This story will keep you entertained if you need something to keep you entertained on your next cross country flight. I have become enthralled, well maybe that is a little strong, fascinated by the mysteries taking place in the Texas Hill Country. It's where I live and love things that are familiar to me. In the case of mysteries (murder and mayhem), I am only interested in the fact that they take place around where I live and are not personally connected to me! If you can believe that a muffin talks to the sheriff and helps him solve a crime, you might like this story even though the ending felt rather anti-climatic. I am still looking for the Fez restaurant; the shish kebab sounds like it might be pretty decent!
