If you want the actual music used in the rides and attractions, buy one of the official WDW albums. These are Disney song covers by a variety of artists. Etta James makes "It's a Small World" meaningful and beautiful, Tim Curry has his tongue planted firmly in cheek in "The Ballad of Davy Crockett," and Take 6's lush accapella harmonies are outstanding on "When You Wish Upon a Star." As another reviewer said, David Benoit's "Spectromagic Medley" shimmers like the parade itself. Linda Rondstadt and Olivia Newton-John sing pretty straight-forward versions of familiar tunes, and Brian McKnight's sentimental "Remember the Magic," used in Disney World advertising, might bring a tear to your eye.

I love Disney music, but you know what, I do not always want to listen to Disney music. This is a great collection of songs that are interpretations of disney songs done in the artists style. TRULY GREAT BACKGROUND MUSIC FOR LIFE.

The first time I heard this CD, I thought, "Goodness, what have they done to that familiar Disney music?" I was shocked!
Then I listened again, and again, and again. I have the CD in my car and I play it over and over. Tim Curry's version of "Davy Crockett," always makes me laugh. The SpectroMagic parade theme makes me cry remembering the beauty of the parade. I can sing "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "It's a Small World."
The first time you hear this CD, you may not really like it. If you play it for the third time, you will love it.

Pros: Some good versions can be found, especially Barenaked Ladies!

Cons: Tim Curry

When I came across this CD, I was in the Walt Disney World resort. The mood is light and happy, and what seems just as light as the mood, is the cash in my wallet. One look at Tinkerbell sprinkling her fairy dust over the Cinderella Castle against a purple sky is all I needed to see before the cash in my wallet floated into the cash registers at Disney World.

Actually, I looked at the back of the CD first very quickly and scanned for artists I liked. There was one or two that appealed to my tastes and I bought this product.

What caught my eye right away is Olivia Newton-John singing Part Of Your World from The Little Mermaid. I love the original from the movie that is sung by Jodi Benson, and I loved Olivia Newton-John's voice. The fact is that Olivia doesn't come close to Jodi Benson's classic version, but it's not without it's charm. The original, if you don't know, is a beautiful ballad with beautiful lyrics that tell the dream of this mermaid, Ariel, of becoming a human with legs instead of fins. Olivia does a nice job singing this song, the problem in my opinion falls with the drumming. For the original version, there are no drums, just an orchestra that accent the lyrics and provide the right drama at the right time. On this Olivia version, the drums give the song an off-time feeling and Olivia's voice comes off sounding awkward.

The year of this release by the way was 1996. 1996 was one of the few years when the hit TV show Friends was huge, and everybody who was a fan knew that The Rembrandts was the band that sings the theme song to the show. So during my quick perusal, their band name caught my eye as well. The songs they cover are from the film The Lion King. The songs are I Just Can't Wait To Be King and Hakuna Matata and they are in a seamless medley form. Here we have two upbeat songs originally and now even more upbeat for The Rembrandts' take on these songs.

As I am a fan of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, I loved Tim Curry as Frankenfooter. He is featured here with the classic song from the 50s, The Ballad Of Davy Crockett. Now I know from past movies, that Tim Curry has a good powerful voice, yet here he gives his best impression of William Shatner's singing voice to what sounds like the theme music of Conan O'Brien's television show. SO in summary, God-awful!

A band who, at the time, I was not aware of is Barenaked Ladies. Their version of Grim Grinning Ghosts is the brightest shining highlight on this compilation CD.
It's a zoot-suited jazzed up version that somehow stays faithful to the classic original that can be heard during the Haunted Mansion attraction found in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. It's better than the original, the fast piano and perfect vocal harmonies by the band is terrific. This version sounds like a cross between a tune from a Dr. Suess movie and Cab Calloway.

The Pointer Sisters do an awful version of Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life For Me). The original is a swash buckling drinking song that can be heard in the attraction The Pirates of The Caribbean. The Pointer Sisters turned it into a sterile R&B version. They attempt to make it more ebonic with the hilarious changed lyric:
♫Yo Ho, Yo Ho a pirate's life for me
Yo Ho, Yo Yo, it's a pirate's life for me♫

The amazing singer Etta James performs a medley of two classic Disney songs, It's A Small World and When You Wish Upon A Star. She does a fine job in this gospelized version until she gets to the end and it's time to scat.
♫ "It's a small world, talking 'bout an itty-bitty world y'all" ♫

Patti Austin gives an enjoyable rendition of Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, as long as you do not compare it to the original version. I admit it took me a while to wash my brain of the original and give this a fresh listen. This is an upbeat R&B version, and it's a lot of fun.

I really am not a big fan of Linda Ronstadt, her politics annoy me, but I have to give her props as Randy Jackson says. She sings a beautiful version of A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes. She makes it her own, and gives new life to such an old classic. It starts off a lot like the original, but when the drums and electric piano kick in, it turns into a soft jazz/adult contemporary number.

The Walt Disney World Band adds a lot of swing to the Mickey Mouse March/Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah medley. This is OK, not the best on this CD by a long shot.

Take 6 give a short but nice a capella version of When You Wish Upon A Star. Nice harmonies from this classic from Pinocchio's Daring Journey attraction. Take 6 was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997 for this performance by the way.

Possibly, my favorite track is the hidden track, number 14, seems to incorporate some of EPCOT's World Showcase countries. It's awesome and very Disney-esque.

Fans of Disney and Disney music probably would not pop this CD on in their car in lieu of the classic originals. Yet, this CD is not totally without its charm. There are some good performances, yet sometimes surrounded by a not-so-good performance. I believe this CD is a good one to add to the old Disney collection, number one because the songs are Disneyland/World attraction related, and two, because there is about half a CD's worth of good music. Add it to your collection and rip a Disney CD that contains one or two from here. Great CD cover art anyway.

I always love having anything with Disney music because I really like going to Disneyland. I mainly bought this because it had the "Pirates' Life for Me" song. Before I received this CD, I thought it was a music book for a piano.
