HASH(0x8e0f5fc0) étoiles sur 5 Near-perfect AOR album - (re)reissued 20 décembre 2006
Par Justin G. - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
What a difference the right singer makes. Strangeways' 1986 debut album was decent enough, but the UK-based melodic rockers struck gold when they replaced original vocalist Tony Liddell with Terry Brock, who had previously sang for Kansas and Steve Morse, and provided background vocals to several high profile AOR artists.

Brock's debut with Strangeways was 1988's Native Sons, which is arguably the band's finest hour. His vocal style is like Steve Perry's with a bit of a David Glen Eisley "rock" edge, and is absolutely perfect for the kind of Journey/Foreigner/Toto/Giuffria/FM AOR that Strangeways did so well. Native Sons draws the best elements from all of the era's best AOR/arena rock bands, and while it sounds pretty dated all these years later, it is still a fantastic album that can hold its own against any of that era's better known AOR albums. Native Sons is full of great guitar work, gorgeous melodies, lush keyboards, solid songwriting, and above all Terry Brock's powerful vocal performance.

If you're a fan of that larger than life 80's AOR/arena rock sound, Native Sons is all but guaranteed to put a big smile on your face. Strangeways should have been huge back in the day, and they're still well worth discovering now.

Edition Notes: Majestic reissued Native Sons in 2006. The album features digital remastering and four bonus tracks - live versions of "Stand Up and Shout," "Breakin' Down the Barriers," "Dance With Somebody" and "Never Gonna Lose It."

Edition Notes 2: The Majestic reissue was pretty impressive, but Rock Candy did a fantastic job with their 2011 reissue of Native Sons. There's only one bonus track (a live combo of "Stand Up and Shout" and "Breaking Down the Barriers"), but the new remastering job is just incredible. Rock Candy has a great track record with breathing new life into these old favorites, and they definitely continue that here. The liner notes have also been expanded to include rare photos and a band essay/interview by Classic Rock Magazine's Dave Ling. It's a 5-star reissue all the way.

HASH(0x8e0f9030) étoiles sur 5 Over the top AOR/melodic rock that makes the most of every second! 22 janvier 2012
Par Nikiforos V. Skoumas - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
"Native Sons" is the second album by British-American AOR/melodic rock group "Strangeways" originally released in 1987, re-issued by "Majestic Rock" in 2003. The line up features guitarist Ian Stewart, bassist David Stewart, drummer Jim Drummond and American vocalist Terry Brock.

"Native Sons" takes the basis of radio-friendly AOR and induces inventive riffs, melodic guitar lines and flamboyant solos. Keyboards are also a big part of the album, much like the bass, ever-present yet complementary to the overall sound of "Strangeways" rather than driving the songs. Of course one has to appraise Brock's vocal performance, bringing to front a powerful and very clean singing style, easily one of his best recordings to date. Clearly the vocal melodies on "Native Sons" would prove a challenge for just about any singer, mainly due to their length and quick succession.

The re-mastering effort is also a huge plus for the particular release, granting these recordings depth and clarity which rarely comes out from re-touched seasoned tapes. You can pick any song on "Native Sons" and you get a melodic rock classic on the spot. Form the stylish opener "Dance with somebody" to the powered-up "Where do we go from here", to the aggressive "Stand up and shout" it is all authentic, substantial `80s melodic rock, never forgetting the immense power ballad "Goodnight LA". Overall if you are a fan of `80s rock and AOR/melodic rock in particular you simply can't go wrong with this remarkable album.

HASH(0x8e0f9468) étoiles sur 5 Reloaded AOR masters! 14 juin 2012

I have to say this particular selection was a bit weak and yet it excelled my expectations. The tracks are smooth and melodic for the most part but i think the 1st album was better in my opinion. However, the 2nd album is awesome in the sense that it paved the way for their next release ''Walk in the Fire'' which is one of the best AOR albums i've had the honor in obtaining as part of my collection. Native sons is worth purchasing because it is outstanding music for the chosen few who enjoy 80's AOR. Long live the rebellion!

HASH(0x8e0f9450) étoiles sur 5 AOR Melodic Rock Masterpiece!! 1 juin 2006
Par Stuart M. Tysinger - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This is one of the best AOR/Melodic Rock CD that exists. If you love Journey, Bad English, Giant, Foreigner, Lou Gramm, China Sky then you must own this cd. Singer Alan Carvell left the band and in came Terry Brock (Michael Bolton, Seventh Key) and turned them into a more AOR/Melodic Rock band. This is a masterpiece and considered one of the best in the genre. Don't miss out on this CD because you will regret it. Stand outs are: Only A Fool, Never Going To Lose It, Goodnight L.A. and Where Do We Go From Here.

This is a great CD with some hard rock feel to it. This CD is so good that I don't have a favorite on here, but I think the best has to be "Face to Face" and "Dance With Somebody." I would recommend this to anyone, especially to fans of AOR, Hair Metal and Hard Rock.
