Not an easy one, not for beginners, but the best fretboard mastering method I've seen

Not as fun as Troy Nelson's Guitar Aerobics but really a great tool for a better knowledge of the fretboard, with great emphasis on what he calls the target tones

HASH(0x931473fc) étoiles sur 5 Fretboard Freedom 28 juin 2013
Par Brad Bailey - Publié sur Amazon.com

I've been playing guitar for about 25 years. Much of that time, I was stuck in boxes. I learned the standard pentatonic (greek for "five note") scale box, and used almost only that for several years. (Think the first phrase of Jimmy Page's solo from "Stairway to Heaven.") Sometimes I'd break out of it, but that was always home base. Even when I had to play jazz, I'd almost always rely on the minor pentatonic scale pattern. I had difficulty visualizing the fretboard as a whole. I tried a bunch of different tricks. But I still see it in boxes.

Troy Nelson, former editor of my favorite guitar magazines, has come up with a method to get out of that rut. In Fretboard Freedom, he's come up with a daily practice regimen to help us box-imprisoned pickers to get out of the box, and also to see how the patterns relate to different chords. Nelson takes a chord-based approach, rather than scalar. The reasoning being that chord tone focused playing enables us to outline the chord changes of the music we're playing.

For me, one of the best parts of the book is its organization. Something new to work on every day. I'm one of those who needs a methodical approach, and Nelson delivers here. Each week focuses on a new key center. First up, he gives the chord voicings, arpeggio, and scale pattern that everything will be built from. Then there's a lick based off of a chord voicing. The next few lessons are the same lick reworked in different fretboard positions, built off of different chord voicings. Towards the end of the week he changes things up.

I'm already finding Fretboard Freedom to be very helpful. The set schedule has motivated me to be more consistent in my practicing, and I'm already making connections that had escaped me the last 20 odd years. - See more at: http://bradbaileymusic.com/blog/fretboard_freedom_by_troy_nelson#sthash.YR99p3WU.dpuf

HASH(0x93147450) étoiles sur 5 Voicings, Scales, Arpeggios, Licks...this book has it all 21 mai 2013

I would call myself a beginner to intermediate player. I can play a few songs with tab. I just learned the C Major Scale and the A minor Pentatonic. I know how to use both scales to improvise over music. The major problem I had is that I can't improvise unless I am looking at some kind of fretboard road map. That is why I bought this book. Starting this book my goal was to come out of it knowing exactly where every note is, knowing exactly where every scale voicing is and knowing how to get from one to the other musically. Having written that, I love this book. It is exactly what I am looking for and more.

I have two other books which are also good, Fretboard Workbook and Fretboard Logic. I find myself gravitating to this one the most for a couple of reasons. FB Logic is a little bit dated to me and a little bit flimsy on the ideas. FB Workbook is very good but it does not have enough exercises to reinforce the ideas. This book has solid ideas, with solid examples and on top of that it is divided into a daily program.

The presentation of this book is amazing. Other guitar books look amateurish as if done by a typewriter at times. This book is very, very professionally done with a nice lay out. Presentation isn't everything but the author put a lot of work into this book and I appreciate that.

Where should you be in terms of playing to get the most out of this book? I would write if you know the major scale and pentatonic scale then this book can help you fill in the gaps and more.

HASH(0x93147888) étoiles sur 5 Excellent licks book 2 avril 2013

This is not for beginners, but boy it's not THAT advanced. You need to know some techniques (slide, bending, hammer ons and pull off) to benefit from the text, but it's not that difficult. You won't find extra complex rhythms at the beginning that would make you cry. The method is really interesting :It is a combination of CAGED chords, arpeggios and pentatonic scales which covers different positions of the guitar, so it teaches to play outside the box, and along with the licks studied, this will give us a good knowledge and command of the fretboard, and good technique. It is a one year program (like Guitar Aerobics) I am playing the licks and they are quite good! I am really happy with this purchase. Recommended!!

I love this book. I have been playing guitar for almost 50 years and I know my pentatonics, but Fretboard Freedom really helps you visualize the entire guitar neck in a different way by playing the same lick in five different places on the neck utilizing the CAGED system. These are cool and useful licks that can be applied to any playing situation. This is not a shred book, but rather a systematic method of navigating the entire fretboard. I love the fact that you master one lick per day over a period of a year. Fretboard Freedom is a great book as is Guitar Aerobics. Highly recommended!

Beware that this instruction book is not geared to a beginning guitarist. To get the most out of this book, you have to have a lot of pre-experience with barre chords, string bending, slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, arpeggios, and alternate picking at sixteenth note speeds. There is not any instruction on how to do these things except for the tabs and the CD that lets you hear what the lick should sound like. A budding guitarist could easily get frustrated and give up too quickly because these licks are just too advanced from the start. One lick could take an entire week or more to learn and play well. An advanced player who already possesses these skills won't have any problems with these licks and would be able to assimilate the material more easily and get the most out of what this book is really intended for. My suggestion is to first spend a year with Guitar Aerobics before introducing yourself to this book. I rate the book with 3 stars because I felt that there should be some claim that the buyer have a certain prerequisite skill level before making the purchase.
