Présentation de l'éditeur

***After Neverlove, there's more drama in the fantastic follow up: They All Fall Down***

For a girl born of privilege and a young man bred for status, life truly sucks. And what was love but a twisted thing or currency to earn from unloving parents? At least, until they meet each other...

Abigail - Abused to the point of defeat, seventeen doesn't seem a bad age to die. Surviving suicide leads her to a second chance at V'Salicus Academy to become a Cleanser, a protector of lost souls.

Basil - Perfection is the key to earning his parents' love. A slip of the tongue lands him in service to hell as the devil's newest Harvestor, a collector of lost souls to feed his new master's constant craving.

As with angels and demons, love is forbidden for Cleansers and Harvestors, yet it is the forbidden that is most alluring. When their paths cross, true love is what Abigail and Basil finally discover in each other. Can they hold tight to their love, or will duty trump all, leaving them both to a fate of Neverlove?

***Beware, there will be action, light romance and a few moments that will tug at your soul.***

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Pacing & Interesting Plot Twists 10 février 2013

STORYLINE: Two young souls find themselves on the other side--one, helping lost souls make their way to the judgment seat and the other, stealing souls for the evil one. When their paths cross, they are drawn to each other, but how can their relationship survive if one is serving heaven and the other, hell?

Abigail Bishop: An abused spunky seventeen year old who gets a second chance at life and learns unique skills that help her combat the demons of hell.

Basil Hines: A wimpy young man seeking acceptance from his parents but is fighting an uphill battle. In an ironic twist, losing his life gives him the opportunity to stand on his feet and do battle for what he desires most.

I LIKED: the fact that although both Abigail and Basil can be considered weak and beaten at the start of their story, they mature into courageous young people with a will to fight and survive.

I COULD HAVE LIVED WITHOUT: the scary pictures Ms. Brown drew in her descriptions of hell and some of its occupants. Gruesome, but effective.

COVER NOTE: I didn't get a full picture of Abigail, other than the Goth get-up she uses as a shield for her pain. The cover, with its flames and broken heart, hints at what the story is about.

OVERALL COMMENTS: I don't normally read in the paranormal genre, but the few books I've read have been good ones that encourage me to read more. Abigail's situation is difficult to deal with and things do get worse before they get better. I found the pacing good and the plot twists interesting. I'll be looking out for the sequel.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A fascinating dark tale 8 mars 2013

Abigail's future had never looked more bleak. So when she tries to end her life, she receives one thing she never expected: a chance at a good future. At V'Salicus Academy, she trains to be a servant of Heaven to help escort souls to Judgement. She still must deal with the pain of her past, but she meets a cute boy named Basil in a coffee shop and he makes her feel good again. The secrets keep building, and when everything explodes, Abigail must decide between duty and love.

Angela Brown hooks the reader with a powerful beginning and doesn't disappoint with several shocks at the end. It's a dark and emotional tale that makes your stomach twist and your heart hammer in your chest. Abagail begins at the bottom in the darkest depths of her own nightmares and claws her way back up. She's real, lovable, and admirable. I'm an even bigger fan of Basil. Smart, compassionate, and a bit of a geek. I love he's not the bad boy we typically see in YA books.

The plot takes the reader on several twists and turns. To dark places and sweet moments. The imagery is astounding. I could picture even the most horrific things in my head like a certain throne!

I can't wait to read more in this series and to learn more about the fascinating mythos.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 a fantastic YA paranormal romance 22 décembre 2014

Abigail is a servant of heaven and Basil is a servant of hell, one a Cleanser and the other a Harvester. They don’t have a strong concept of what love is because of their twisted parents and early environments. The two shouldn’t be together since they’re in opposing factions, but a romance happens anyway.

Basil is an amazing character. I also felt for Abigail, especially since the story starts with her side and she went through horrific abuse in the hands of a family member. This YA paranormal romance has a fantastic storyline and will pull any reader into the plot from beginning to end.

The beginning was the most interesting part of the book to me since the beginning was believable. It introduced the two main characters: Basil, an unhappy 19 year old college student who is dominated by his overbearing mother who wants him to be the perfect straight A student with no social life, and a weak, seemingly indifferent father; and Abby, a 17 year old girl who is and has been sexually abused by her father for five years and a mother who has never protected her. Both characters feel unloved and betrayed by their parents. After we meet the characters in the first few chapters and begin to empathize with them, the plot changes to fantasy with devils and angels and soul savers and soul harvesters and shadow jumpers that interact with human beings and also live as human beings. Although the storyline is interesting and creative and very descriptive, I was not captivated by the characters or the story. The characters were for the most part too good or too bad. There was, however, a touching love connection between Basil and Abby, one who represented heaven and the other, hell. The ending was ok but a little confusing. I suppose my confusion would be cleared up in Book 2. This was easy reading and a nice diversion from the epic, heart wrenching, soul stirring novels that I usually read.

I tend to hold first-time authors in high esteem, especially those who take risks. Normally, I stay as far away from the YA paranormal genre as possible because there really isn't anything new under the sun (again, with a few notable exceptions). It seems each book is a pastiche (usally poorly executed) of others before it. However, NEVERLOVE was an amazing surprise and though it did adhere to some paranormal conventions, it was also far darker in tone and not full of sugar and fluff. I was actually thrilled at how good this book was. The concept of Shadow Jumpers is totally original.

Of course, it was the cover that sold me. Call me shallow if you want but I like seeing people of color front and center on a cover. I especially like it in genres in which we are strongly underrepresented as lead characters, such as paranormal and fantasy. The cover grabbed me, the story kept me. The writing was strong and could only get even better with the next book. Abigail and Basil were refreshingly flawed but sympathetic and their blossoming relationship didn't feel tossed in, though it could have used a little more time to develop considering Abigail's background. For the discerning YA paranormal reader, one cannot go wrong with this novel.

If I have one minor quibble it's that Abigail wasn't described thoroughly enough. The cover is a dead giveaway of course, but I would have liked to have had a little more meat in regards to what she looked like. After all, Basil was described pretty well.
