Description du produit

Revue de presse

Stephen Leslie has put together an absolutely first class book for anyone wishing to explore how horsepower can provide the energy we need for small-scale and resilient food production. Packed with useful tips and techniques, this is an indispensable guide to working horses in a closed-farming system. From selecting and training your beasts, to working the ground, managing pasture and cutting hay, I for one will never be far from seeking advice and guidance from Stephen's The New Horse-Powered Farm. I only hope that some day, Stephen will visit the shores of this island and impart some of his knowledge first hand! --Alex Langlands, presenter, BBC TV's The Victorian/Edwardian/Wartime Farm

"Presents all the information a small-scale farmer will need to incorporate draught horses into the farm's working day." --British Horse

"This is a very detailed book on the use of the horse in farming and market gardening operation today and can be regarded right now already as the handbook for the modern horse-powered farm." --Green Living

Présentation de l'éditeur

In an era when fuel is a primary concern, draft horses are seen by many as the solution to small-scale, resilient farming with a closed-loop system. Horses bring farmers back to the roots of what it means to work the land and present a viable model for a small farm that lasts, while offering enjoyment for the whole family. This is the first book of its kind, offering wisdom and techniques for using horse power on the small farm or homestead, from long-time horse farmer Stephen Leslie. The New Horse-Powered Farm sets the stage for incorporating draft power on the farm by presenting tips on getting started with horses, care of the work horse, different horse-training systems, and the merits of different draft breeds. The novice teamster is introduced to the basic tools of horse-drawn tillage and cultivation used for profitable horse-powered farming, with a spotlight on whole-farm management, as well as information on haying with horses, raising small grains, managing the woodlot, farm education, agritourism, and more. Incorporated throughout are profiles of more than a half-dozen farms that epitomize some exciting new trends in agriculture and highlight the new and old horse-drawn equipment used for profitable market gardening, including contributions directly from the farmers about what works and what doesn't. The novice teamster is introduced to the specifics of horse-drawn tillage and cultivation of the market garden, and using horses in the woodland. Recent studies on the economics of horse-powered market gardening and a comparison between horse-, human-, and tractor-powered systems have been included to help round out the picture. The resources section lists contact info for teamster schools, books, draft-animal publications, annual events, equipment manufacturers, parts and repairs, and more. A must-have for any farmer, homesteader, or teamster seeking to work with draft power in a closed-loop farming system.

I am very impressed with this comprehensive and interesting book about farming with horses. As a life-long horse-person, this is something I've considered but didn't even know where to begin. This book doesn't only answer that question, but many others as well. And it answers them in detail and with heart. It's all in here, from the history of the horse as a work animal to modern applications. Mr. Leslie doesn't just address "how to", but the very relevant "why". I am grateful to Mr. Leslie, and all of the other contributors as well, for being willing to share their vast knowledge and wisdom with the rest of us.

In some ways I should not be writing this. 60 years ago we farmed with horses. When we went to tractors I thought we did the right thing. Reading this book makes me think maybe not. If you are going to market garden this is a wonderful book and will help you a great deal. For those of you who remember horse power of days gone by this will you with nostollage.

This is a very nice book. Its well written, a very pleasant read and did I mention how badly I want to do the things that are described in it?
