Description du produit

Présentation de l'éditeur

With Trillions On the Table, Nobody Plays Fair, and Everyone Plays For Keeps

The New Robber Barons, is an anthology of Janet Tavakoli’s original chiefly web-based articles from the September 2008 financial crisis through February 2012. The original commentaries are unrevised so that readers experience the real-time thought process. Some background was repeated in commentaries so that they could read as stand-alone articles as events unfolded.

The eBook is for readers who do not wish to sift through web content, and who do not wish to read in print format, both of which are alternative options.

The New Robber Barons’ articles pick up where her previous book, Dear Mr. Buffett, ended. Tavakoli serves up example after stunning international example of no-strings-attached socialization of losses and privatization of gains. She exposes the criminogenic environment that enabled international oligarchs to solidify power.

Tavakoli’s conclusions were eventually confirmed by Congressional investigations.

Easy to read because it is in instalments. Hard to read because one has to be in the mindset of a trader and have to be familiar with that language. Nonetheless, given these limitations I learnt a tremendous lot from the book, helped by a lot of repetition from one article to another. There were many links to give it depth but they didn't always work on my ipad.

I am full of respect for Janet Tavakoli and her outspokenness to protect investors from fraud and her determination to hold bankers and rating agencies and regulators accountable for the 2008 meltdown. I am hoping to unearth her counterpart in New Zealand because we have a "Financial Markets Conduct Bill" going through Parliament at the moment.

Nobody can dispute that Tavakoli is brilliant and was right on just about everything regarding the financial crisis long before almost anybody else, and the book certainly demonstrates that.

Unfortunately, this compendium will not help anybody unfamiliar with the causes of the crisis to understand it any better. The book is simply a collection of her articles on the subject. All of the articles assume the reader has a lot of knowledge about the subject matter and terminology; she gives very little, if any, explanatory background before launching into her analysis. In addition, the articles are written in almost a stream of consciousness style with little logical organization. Even for somebody like me who is very knowledgeable about the subject matter, the writing style and lack of background explanation made it tough sledding. Finally, it is very, very repetitive. I can understand how that can happen when one is writing articles on a frequent basis, but when putting them together in a book, it is very tedious to read the same thoughts, many times using the exact same phrases, over and over again.

There are many excellent books about the financial crisis that are much better written and easier to understand. True, many of those authors are writing with hindsight, while Tavakoli was pushing out her articles in real time and warning of the consequences. Unfortunately, that does not make reading Tavakoli's book a better way to understand what went on.

Well presented, plenty of eye opening insights. It can also be maddening and down right depressing considering the crimes that go unprosicuted. And they are crimes commited by criminals illustrating the upside down world of "morality" we live in.

This is an exhaustive and well-written book that everyone should read. I highly recommend it. Deliberative and informative. An important reference book for anyone interest in economic history.

This is a compilation of Janet Tavakoli's writings on the financial industry and particularly the
financial crisis.

She is a well regarded and highly credentialed expert on financial instruments and derivatives.

This is certainly one of the better books on the subject, but I can't wait until she brings out her next original work!
