Présentation de l'éditeur

‘Munro is still one of our most fearless explorers of the human being, as she descends, time and again, headlamp on full beam, pickaxe and butter-knife at the ready’
The Times

Spanning her last five collections and bringing together her finest work from the past fifteen years, this new selection of Alice Munro's stories infuses everyday lives with a wealth of nuance and insight.

Beautifully observed and remarkably crafted, written with emotion and empathy, these stories are nothing short of perfection. A masterclass in the genre, from an author who deservedly lays claim to being one of the major fiction writers of our time.

I love Alice Munro but this was a collection of mostly already published stuff so I was very disappointed.

These stories live and live on in ones memory. Alice Munro has an exquisite grasp of characterisation and descriptions, while sometimes leaving a teasing note for the reader.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of the best literary writers alive, and now, retired. 28 juin 2013

Alice Munro is an amazing writer, but there is something you should know about her before you buy any of her works. She writes long short stories. In fact, most of them would probably be considered novellas or novelletes by fellow writers. Very few of them are under 35 pages. All of her stories are about oppressed women trying to deal with the way life treats them. Most of the stories are set in Canada (where Munro is from) and a lot of them are extremely entertaining. This collection, which draws from her most recent five collections (Dear Life not counting, as it came out after this one), draws on her strongest collections to date. Too Much Happiness and Runaway, especially, are Munro's best collections, and the main reason she is so popular and revered.

Now, Munro is a literary writer, as I say in the title of this review. She writes literary reviews in the style of Chekhov, meaning that, with a few exceptions, there isn't a whole lot of action going on. There's a lot more epiphany and inner dialogue and exploration of psychology. If that sounds pretentious or boring, don't pick up this collection. But if that's your cup of tea (if you like Raymond Carver or Ernest Hemingway, for instance) then you will love Munro, who is better than both of those guys.

This collection contains my two favorite stories by Munro, "The Love of a Good Woman" and "Free Radicals." While this collected stories book is pretty good, I am a Munro purist and collector and own all the books it collects from, rather than this one. That's what I recommend if you like her work, which you can read online at The New Yorker before you make this purchase.

Hop on board if you like Munro, and you can say you read her work the year she retired for good.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Human Dimensions 31 octobre 2014
Par An admirer of Saul - Publié sur Amazon.com

Fifteen short stories from five of Alice Munro's short story collections, and there is no other way to describe them other than in variants of "Brilliant" ; Alice Munro sits easily with the true Nobel prize winning greats she joined last year.
So many of the stories stick in the mind; Willens's death ; Fiona suffering from dementia; Doree's abusive and Psychotic husband Lloyd ;Edith and Sabitha writing love letters to a lonely spinster housekeeper from Sabitha's father;, Old James and his family emigrating to Canada from Scotland in 1814....all exploring the human being and told so they allow the reader to be part of their creative process as Munro never tells you or leads you to how you should think or feel about anyone she writes about , something other writers often fail in. This is what makes these stories rise above others.
The only negative would be that these stories have already appeared in 'The Love of a Good Woman', 'Hateship Friendship, Courtship Loveship Marriage' , 'Runaway', 'View from Castle Rock' and 'Too Much Happiness', so many would have already read some or all, but if-like me- this is your first Alice Munro book, you are going to be hugely impressed. A great book by a truly great writer.

I was disappointed. Never having read Alice Munro before I was expecting something wild. What I got was a lot of stuff to wade through before any point of interest was reached; something mild. That said, I did enjoy about half of the book, but nothing really sticks, except a mental image of women taking train journeys to get to, or avoid ,a crisis. Fair enough.
