Présentation de l'éditeur

After a busted marriage kicks his drinking problems into overdrive and the LAPD unceremoniously dump him, 35-year-old Jesse Stone's future looks bleak. He is shocked, however, when a small Massachusetts town called Paradise hires him as their police chief. Once on board he doesn't have to look for trouble in Paradise - it comes to him. For what is on the surface a quiet New England community quickly proves to be a crucible of political and moral corruption - replete with triple homicide, tight Boston mob ties, flamboyantly errant spouses, maddened militiamen and a psychopath-about-town who has fixed his violent sights on the new lawman. He finds he must test his mettle and powers of command to emerge a local hero - or the deadest of dupes.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Never hire a drunk for a sheriff. 6 mai 2015

Decent read though just average overall. Divorce can be hard on a man, maybe lead to drinking too much, which can interfere with keeping your job. No one should hire someone who is drunk at his interview but Jesse Stone was just hired to be the new police chief of Paradise, Maine. Paradise is a small, quiet town where some people are hiding some fairly big secrets. Secrets which some might be willing to kill to keep. – Decent prose, plenty of characters with their own agenda and flaws to keep the story interesting. The story is different from what you might expect from the Tom Selleck movie series but you can see where the movies came from. I think I will get the second book in the series at some time in late summer.

I've read all of the Spenser series and loved the characters, humor, and story development, I hated to see a good series end. So, I'm hoping for the same humor Spenser had and all the comradery between the other characters in the new Jesse Stone books. It's like starting a new friendship. So far, he's a good guy, love life problems, maybe a little to much drinking, storyline is good. I"m still getting use to all the new characters and their quirks. I look forward to picking up the book to see what happens next. BUT, I'm still waiting for the humor, it separates the good thrillers from the very enjoyable ones.

I love the movies. The book is different in many ways. I dont like the f word at all. I know that is how a lot of people in the police dept talk but not all of them. I just dont like reading those words but hey it sells books. I do love reading the books because of the suspense. I like the story line and how it keeps you on your feet. Thanks for the books.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 My favorite part about the Jesse Stone character is how hung ... 29 octobre 2015

My favorite part about the Jesse Stone character is how hung up he is on his ex. I've seen all of the movies with Tom Selleck, and now I'm finally reading the novels--I'm getting a lot more about the character from the novels. I'm also getting much more about all of the other characters in the movies that I never got before. The novels fill in so much more.

I give only four stars because of some firearms info that doesn't seem realistic to me. I'm a gun geek, and I cannot believe that a "great detective" from the downtown precinct of the LA Robbery/Homicide Div would carry a j-frame snub as a primary weapon, even in 2001. It would have been unlikely enough in 1991. In Mayberry or Paradise, okay, no problem. But not in LA Metro. Selleck changed this for the movies and carries a commander-sized 1911. That I could see I think. But these days big-city detectives get in too many shoot-outs to not carry heavier primary firearms. Even Jim Cirillo carried two DA revolvers as a primary, and that was about 1975 I think. But most readers won't care about this, so no problem.

For me, I enjoy the character's complexity. And even the bad guys are interesting. Hasty Hathaway seems very childlike in some ways, in his idealizing his world and in over simplifying his wife. Gino Fish, who apparently is gay (I never picked up on this in the movies--perhaps William Sadler has been in too many bad ass roles for me to see him as gay???) is wonderfully complex, although we only get an intro in this novel. From the movie, I thought he was a linear personality. Not so in the book. Lots of info about Jo Jo in the novel that wasn't in the movie. And his was perhaps the most simple character in the novel. Although even his "epithet" is a curious choice, given the circumstances in the novel. One wonders about his mommy issues, maybe a Madonna/Whore complex or something...

All in all, a terrific novel, competent writing, and some of my favorite detective characters ever!

An introduction to two things, a policeman who was fired for drinking on the job after his divorce and a town that hired him because he was a drunk and a policeman. An LA detective on the downward slide lands in a small town in Massachusetts that has an unusual amount of hidden crime going on undetected.
