Par Scott Knight - Publié sur
Format: Broché
Kyle Higgins's Nightwing Vol. 3: Death of the Family is a crossover with the Joker story running through the Bat-titles. Nightwing (Dick Grayson) has sunk his life-savings into building a home for Haly's Circus at a renovated amusement park. But Joker has other plans. He intends to use Dick's friends to break him down and punish him. Why? Because Joker believes Dick (and the other members of the Bat-Family) are preventing Batman from reaching his potential.
I really enjoy Nightwing; he's my favorite of the heroes surrounding Batman. He is the more hopeful face to Batman's cynicism and darkness. But lately, Nightwing has been going through a lot and is beginning to lose some of his optimism. There is a poignant scene with Robin (Damian Wayne) that perfectly encapsulates Dick Grayson and shows how he balances Batman. The scene is all the more moving in light of recent developments with Damian, and the resulting story is very moving and well done. Higgins has really added emotional depth to Dick Grayson's character.

This is a collection for Dick Grayson fans, and for those looking to read the complete Death of the Family storyline. I highly recommend it.

I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics in exchange for an honest review.

Nightwing Volume 3: Death in the Family continues the interweaving of one story arc across several characters. Each book in Death of the Family has a convergent point (Joker capturing each of Batman's "family" (Nightwing, Damian/Robin, Batgirl, Red Robin/Tim Drake)) and then each diverge either before, during, or after that point. It's a great concept and fleshes out each of the characters nicely. But what keeps that conceit from being a 5 star book is that the convergent panels are simply reprinted in bulk for each bulk and not retold from a different perspective. Like it or hate it, a whole chunk (30 pages or so) are simply repeated across the volumes.

In Nightwing Volume 3 Death of the family, We start from Joker's storyline convergent point of the Batman 'family' captured in the cave. After that scene, Dick Grayson turns to rebuilding the circus in Gotham, with a circus family he has cultivated to bring amusement back to Gotham (and as a tribute to his parents). But Grayson is conflicted - the person making it possible is the daughter of the man responsible for his parents' deaths. If he allows himself to have feelings for her, does he betray his parents? Meanwhile, the Joker has plans for Nightwing, hoping to exploit Nightwing's belief in people by having them try to destroy and then abandon him. Can Nightwing protect those he cares about - or will Joker manage to systematically destroy Dick Grayson's future?

We have some great interaction scenes - between Batgirl and Nightwing, Barbara Gordon and Nightwing, and Damien/Robin. It has a solid story arc but also opens the door for a revelation about a character from Grayson's past.

The artwork didn't wow me this time. Dick Grayson looked a bit too much like Frank Stallone and the female characters were very bulky. It just didn't look like Nightwing enough for my personal preferences. That said, the artwork was solid and well presented.

In all, I appreciated that this one had a very strong storyline and arc. As well, a more serious tone but with a lot of Grayson history/backstory as well.

Received as an ARC from the publisher.

Loved, loved, loved it! OK, I was fed-up with yet another issue of Batman #17 to start off with but then everything was fabulous. A lot of Joker story went on and most of it was new to me even though I've read the big Joker volume. Great action scenes with Lady Shiva and a plot with her develops. Nice bit of relationship romance starting to go on for Dick and then fabulous intimate moments with Damian at the end. But that's not all the book ends with a cliffhanger introducing us to a new old villain. Can't wait for volume 4!

DC Comics unleashes another volume of its New York Times best-selling series with "Nightwing Volume 3: Death of the Family." The collection includes issues 13 through 18 of the monthly title and issue 17 of Batman. There's a lot going on in this graphic novel collection and it makes reading it all the more fun.

Nightwing has his hands full fighting crime these days in Gotham City. Our hero goes up against Lady Shiva before facing down the homicidal Joker. The Clown Prince of Crime is dead-set on taking out the Dark Knight's sidekicks and it's Nightwing's turn to play bat-and-mouse with the laughing lunatic. In the aftermath of these events, he finds himself dealing with the death of a brother-in-arms before making a startling and life-altering discovery.

Writer Kyle Higgins handles the bulk of the storytelling found in "Nightwing Volume 3: Death of the Family." Tom DeFalco kicks the book off with the story pitting the super hero against Lady Shiva. Scott Snyder picks up for one chapter to bring the "Death of the Family" story-arc to a close. Each one uses their great talents to weave an intricate tale of excitement and drama.

A few different artists bring all the writers' stories to life in pictures. Each one has their own unique take on the world of Batman and Nightwing. Andres Guinaldo handles illustrating duties for the first storyline. Eddy Barrows leads us into the "Death of the Family" arc. Greg Capullo interjects and closes out the Joker-centric saga. Sanford Greene and Juan Jose Ryp finish out the book in their own individual styles.

Strangely, we don't get any bonus material for "Nightwing Volume 3: Death of the Family." I'm used to thumbing through variant covers, concept sketches, page layouts, and various other extras at the close of DC's graphic novel collections. It's fun to get to see where some of the character concepts came from. Gazing on great alternative cover artwork isn't such a bad thing either.

"Nightwing Volume 3: Death of the Family" is an interesting compilation of different stories. In addition, it gives readers an insight into the super hero's whereabouts during the big Batman event the title of the book alludes to. You can't go wrong with a book that gives you appearances by Lady Shiva, Penguin, Joker, Batgirl, Damian Wayne, and more. Let's not forget a shocking reveal that will leave you frantically fumbling to find issue 19 of the monthly title so you can keep reading.

I'm a big fan of Nightwing, he's my favorite. But the last two books had a totally different artist and the artist must not be able to draw people because it was terrible.

It has an entire Batman comic in it, the one that is the grand finale of "Death in the Family" which I owned by already owning the Batman version of this. But it's nice of them to put it in here so we can complete Nightwing's arc.

I didn't much understand why the last few books just aren't very good, but the first half of the book was amazing.
