5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great book! 5 janvier 2016

We had tickets to the Nutcracker ballet, so I bought this to read to my kids (4 and 2) before we attended the show so they would have an idea on what it would be about. The book does an excellent job of telling the story and is just the right length. I definitely recommend.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Attractive stocking stuffer 23 janvier 2016

Cute stocking stuffer at Christmas time. The author did change the character of Fritz. He is usually depicted as a mischief-maker. In this version he's just a little tike doing what all small children do. I think children enjoy the Fritz the Bully more.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 NOT the ballet story 29 décembre 2012

It's a great story filled with battles and magic. But it's in a very old fashioned language style that will require translation for the kids and does not come trippingly to the tongue. I don't mind this: my husband does. Also, it's the story the ballet is based upon, but great artistic liberties were taken in translating the story for the stage. You can see the roots of the story, but it's drastically different. My little boys were very annoyed that the ballet didn't follow the story and kept whispering to me throughout the ballet about it. While it was a good conversation piece afterwards I think it hurt their enjoyment. Next year before we go see the Nutcracker I will read them one of the many books based on the ballet instead. ;-)
1.0 étoiles sur 5 I expected the artwork to be awesome since Maurice Sendak was the illustrator 25 janvier 2017

This book is very dark, violent and weird. I stopped reading it aloud to my seven-year-old son about half-way through, because the content and imagery was completely inappropriate. The imagery was creepy, as were the drawings. I expected the artwork to be awesome since Maurice Sendak was the illustrator, but they gave my son nightmares. Thanks, Maurice. We had tickets to the ballet and I wanted him to understand that there was a story being acted out on stage through dance, and thought reading about it would increase his enjoyment level. I had read a review in Chinaberry that it was an amazing children's book, so clearly they didn't really read it before writing a review. Highly disappointed.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great childrens' version of the Nutcracker story 20 décembre 2016
Par Nicole - Publié sur Amazon.com

I bought this for my 2 1/2yo before we went to see a performance of the Nutcracker so she would be familiar with the story to help her pay attention. This version is simple, not too long, true to the traditional story and has nice, kid-friendly illustrations. This is now one of my toddler's favorite books and while she enjoyed the ballet performance, weeks later she still wants to read the book every day and talks about it constantly. Plus hearing her say "Herr Drosselmeyer" is hilarious.
