Format: CD
A new Cannibal Corpse album. What's new? Very little, and that's the way it should be.
You don't buy a Cannibal Corpse album expecting subtlety, innovation, and great musicianship. You buy Cannibal Corpse expecting bludgeoning death metal, blood thirsty lyrics and great musicianship. Corpse's riffs have become ever more complex over the years, and have continued to do so here. Hey, they ain't Meshuggah or Atheist, but there's a huge difference between what's on offer here and their debut "Eaten Back To Life". There are unexpected flourishes thrown in here and there, but the listenability remains. The solos are frenetic, as would be expected, but are perhaps a shade cleaner than in previous albums. The drumming is less straightforward than the earlier blast-blast-blast style, with a few odd rhythms thrown in. Never fear though, there are still still plenty of blast beats here!
Perhaps the best feature of this new album are George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher's vocals. They are actually clear enough for most of the lyrics to be understood without closely following the lyric sheet. Corpsegrinder is still bestial in his delivery, but now the murderous lyrical creations are given a fuller horrific scope. Corpsegrinder's style suits the band far better than his long departed predecessor. He has developed a two tone style, both gutteral, adding a touch more variation and venom to the overall sound.
"Hatchet To The Head" is bound to become a new moshpit favourite, with a shout along chorus in the vein of "Skull Full Of Maggots" and blast beats aplenty. "Dormant Bodies Bursting" sees the band cut back the speed a fraction on the chorus, to great effect. It's downright menacing! There are no dud tracks here at all.
The final act of this album is a surprising, but extremely well executed cover of Metallica's "No Remorse". To describe it as heavy is an understatement! A nice solo has been added at the beginning, and the rhythm and bass absolutely thunder along... This is really what this song SHOULD sound like!
Cannibal Corpse don't so much get in your face with this album, as leave you "Sanded Faceless".

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The best with CorpseGringer 27 février 2002

I got this album when it was released. I have only heard of "Hatchet Unto The Head" on radio while I worked at Nightcrew... So it kinda inspired me of buying this album. The album "Gore Obsessed" is pretty much a "Bloodthirst" part 2 but a whole ALOT better in my opinion.
Musically Cannibal Corpse has managed to create one of the best riffs ever made (listen to "When Dead Replaces Life" and you'll know by what I mean). The production is very clean just like Bloodthirst. Lyrically, it hasn't changed much so don't expect any surprises. CorpseGrinder's vocals are more amazing than Bloodthirst. Cannibal Corpse remains Cannibal Corpse and this work is their 2nd best release overall (their 1st would be Butchered At Birth). Anyways best tracks in this album are "Pit Of Zombies", "Hatchet Unto The Head", "Hung And Bled" and "When Dead Replaces Life".
Buy it now, it can become the greatest release of 2002.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Best Corpse album since The Bleeding! 12 mars 2002
Par Total Scumbag - Publié sur Amazon.com

This is the best Cannibal Corpse album with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher and gives me hope that this band may still have a bright future. The best part about this album is the vocals. Corpsegrinder seems to have finally gotten it right and his vocals absolutely shred. The best song on this album is "When Death Replaces Life". The riff to that song is unbelievable and is one of the best Corpse songs of ALL TIME! If you thought Bloodthirst was boring be sure to check this out because Cannibal Corpse has improved big time. This surprises me because it is rare for a band that is 8+ albums into their career and they can still improve and put out high quality albums. Hail death metal!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Cannibal Obsession For Death Metal Gore 7 septembre 2005
Par Ronald Placeres - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This is one of my favorite Cannibal Corpse albums in my collection. I brought it sometime in the spring of 2001. Before the release of the album, there was an MP3 of Hachett To The Head released on the Metal Blade Record's (the band's label) website and it ruled. So like many Cannibal Corpse fans, I had to wait until the release of the album and I did but when it was released, I took it home, heard it and it delivered.

Now before my review. I need to say some things that are very important. When the album was released, I bought 2 copies of it because the first pressings were limited editions featuring a cover of a Metallica song called No Remorse. The cover is not on this version of Gore Obsessed but all IS NOT lost. The cover is on the Worm Infested EP which I will review next. By the way, for the newbies that don't know, the original version of No Remorse is on Metallica's debute album Kill 'Em All.

Now for my review. With this album, it is another new direction for the band. Through the band continues to mature with every album, they always retain the basic elements that have made them who they are in the world of death metal. So it's pretty much a case of incredible musical improvement, innovation and musicianship which makes the band very special. So all of this has been achieved but with no possible chance for selling out and this is the case here as with every album. Brutal vocals, blast beats, pounding bass and solos along with amazing passages, dynamics, creativity and penty of death metal heaviness and brutality along with many suprises. So this album has it all. Some of my favorite songs here are Pit Of Zombies, Dorment Bodies Bursting, Compelled To Lacerate, Drowing In Viscera and When Death Replaces Life. So buy this album and fufill your obsession for gore and buy the Worm Infested EP for the cover of No Remorse.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 took me a couple of years... 7 août 2005

to really appreciate this album...I bought it back when it came out, i think at the begining of 2002? I love Cannibal Corpse, I know they are like everyone's favorite band to bash on, but these guys started it all for me as far as getting me into extreme metal. I absolutely love Gallery Of Suicide, Bloodthirst, and The Wretched Spawn, those have to be my all time favorite Corpse albums. Well, i have always liked this one quite a bit, i just always thought it kind of lacked something....until after about 3 years of listening to this album. Now, i have become Gore Obsessed!!! Man, i can't believe i used to think that some of these tracks were boring, what the hell was wrong with me? This album has everything that makes the 3 i listed above my absolute favorite Corpse albums. Corpsegrinder truely gets better with every recording, listen to his vokill performance on here! Savage Butchery, When Death Replaces Life, Hung and Bled, Mutation Of The Cadaver, i mean listen to that conviction he sings with! Pat and Jack's playing on here is top knotch once again, and Alex contributes some of the best music Corpse has made on this album. Listen to his bass playing closely, you can hear that he is a true master at the bass. He writes a lot of the music and lyrics on here and they are all killer! Paul does some of his best drumming on this album too, it sounds like they must have recorded this coming right off of a tour or something, the precision and conviction that they play with is unbelieveable! I absolutely agree with the fellow reviewer that said Corpsegrinder is under-rated, he has one of the best death metal voices in the genre. And this is coming from someone who normally hates high-pitched screams, but his fits perfectly! For anyone who thinks this recording is mundane, give it some listens and really pay attention, you'll see that it's one the best Corpse albums. They even pulled off a metallica cover that is better than the original, back from when metallica wasn't gay! highly recommended to Corpse freaks!
