You know, I'm fine with wandering around the Hindu Kush with Eric Newby, or trekking the Sahara or running the Amazon. But at some point you've had enough sherpas, camels and man-eating fish. That's where this rollicking High Seas adventure tale from David Baboulene comes in. Let's join the merchant marine and see the world in the company of a vivid, funny, stylish and good humored travel adventurer.

Lots of people can tell a good story, especially over a few beers in a snug spot. But, to write a lively and engaging tale, to capture the humor and energy of an episode on the written page - that is a rare talent.

On top of all that, because this isn't just a collection of adventures and tall tales, you actually get a feel for what day to day life in the merchant marine is like. Romantic and tedious, this accounting is interesting stuff for the armchair traveler.

Bottom line - our author had real adventures, he understood what he was seeing and doing, he can recast his observations as great stories, and he has a puckish and witty sense of humor. How's that for a fine combination?

(Please note that I found this book a while ago while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

This is an entertaining book by a writer who has a good eye, a gift for narrative, and the comedic writing talent of P.G. Wodehouse. The author, David Baboulene (nicknamed "Windy" in the book), takes us with him as he experiences the outside world for the first time as a teenage apprentice seaman on a British cargo ship. Baboulene flies from England to New Orleans to join the ship, where he meets fellow apprentice seamen Giewy, NotNorman and Blom, and the old timers on the crew who do their level best throughout the voyage to keep up the time-honored tradition of making life entertainingly difficult for the apprentices. From New Orleans the ship makes stops to offload and/or load cargo, vittle and/or make repairs in Houston, Barbados, Jamaica, Australia, the Solomon Islands, Samoa, the Gilbert Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Azores, finally finishing up in Liverpool six months after departing New Orleans. This is a great read. I wish it also were available as an audiobook.

The prose is excellent. The book is funny, readable and of great interest to those who are inquisitive about life at sea. One must keep the 1970's vintage in mind while reading, lest the tales become unbelievable. At some point, predictability sets in and the reader feels the urge to skip ahead to the next tale. Beneath it all, there is perhaps the wistful desire to return to a more carefree, forgiving time.

This is far and away one of the funniest books I have ever read. The author is a comic genius.
I literally fell out of bed laughing.

When I rose from the bedroom floor it seemed advisable to take a break from reading in order to recover my composure, and to give my laugh-exhausted innards a chance to resettle. I did a little cooking and then sat down for a small meal.

Unfortunately I also opened the story again and was soon in the throes of hilarity once more, to the extent that I inhaled my hamburger. Only the mercy of God allowed me to clear the blockage before I turned blue.

I'm telling you, this is a DANGEROUSLY funny book . . .

So far only three books have ever made me laugh outloud and so far this was one of the best. Read this book if you have ever wondered about those amazing cargo ships delivering products to the world and the people who make all of this possible. This book was one of those that was so hard to put down. When it ended, I wanted more and so I bought the sequel.
