5.0 étoiles sur 5 I often reread books that I love, and I've reread ONE BREATH AWAY several times 3 décembre 2015

A gunman has entered a school in the sleepy Iowa town of Broken Branch. A thousand miles away, Holly lies helplessly in a hospital bed in Arizona, recovering from severe burns while her two children are trapped in that school. Her daughter Augie is determined to save younger brother PJ. Third grade teacher Mrs. Oliver will risk her life to save her students. Grandfather Will waits helplessly outside. Police officer Meg must find a way to prevent a tragedy in the making. Not everyone will survive.

ONE BREATH AWAY will grab you from the first page and won't let go of you until long after you've finished the last page. The characters are so clearly written they jumped from the pages into my mind as I accompanied them on their journey's throughout the book. Told through several narrators, each POV was clear and distinct and written with a unique and compelling voice in a way that few other writers can do as well as Gudenkauf.

The author's previous works, THESE THINGS HIDDEN and THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE, are both masterpieces as well. I always feel a big of sadness reading one of Gudenkauf's books, because she writes such compelling books and because I know I'll have to wait a while for her next one...yet I know the wait will be worth it.

I often reread books that I love, and I've reread ONE BREATH AWAY several times.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Boring and tidy with no suspense 17 novembre 2012

so once again everyone is giving this book 4+ stars and here's me: ....did we read the same book?

One Breath Away is set in a small Iowa town called Broken Branch. It has what felt like a million narrators but actually turns out to be five:

Holly - Mother of Augie and PJ, living in Arizona at this time, hospitalized for severe burns after an oil fire.

Augie - Holly's 12 year old daughter

Mrs. Oliver - PJ's 3rd grade teacher

Meg - The worlds least proactive police officer

Will - Holly's father/Augie & PJ's grandfather

Holly is a throwaway character, simply necessary to link everyone together and the story wouldn't have been changed if she wasn't in it. Augie is frustrating and careless and absolutely stupid with a sympathetic longing to protect her little brother and meant to help Will redeem himself by having another go with rearing an annoying teenage girl. Mrs. Oliver is a stereotypical elementary school teacher. Actually she starts off interesting and even a little sexy, recalling the way that Mr. Oliver kissed the inside of her neck but it's as if she ages as the novel goes and by the end she's an elderly, retiring teacher. And Meg is one of the worst police officers ever. She spends 80% of the novel putting around, feeling glad her daughter wasn't in school that day and ignoring her phone.

None of these people make good decisions at any time in the course of this novel, except maybe Holly, who doesn't do much besides lay in a hospital bed, though everything we're told about her proves that she too is unable to make smart decisions. Pretty much every step of the way I felt extremely exasperated with all of them.

It's also worth noting that this book is 370 pages, divided into 116 chapters. Each chapter jumps into a different characters head so the reader spend so little time with each person, that it's impossible to really feel part of the experience. Its used to create suspense, keeping us in the dark at moments of action or realization. But it's so obvious in it's execution that the suspense doesn't grip you but just rolls over you, keeping you passively turning the pages in mild disinterest.

The clutch of this novel is Who Dun It -- who is the crazy person with a gun? They have all sorts of ideas. None of which make any sense and each of which is tied up with a big bow by the end of the novel, making it the neatest bloody school invasion book ever.

This was an interesting book. The only problem was I easily figured out who the bad guy was right away. 😐 I kept reading to the end--I was right. This book was so different from The Weight of Silence, that I'm a little disappointed.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 BREATHTAKING THRILLER 24 juillet 2012

On the last day before Spring break in a small rural community in Iowa, a gunman enters the elementary school and takes a roomful of students hostage. Because of the maze-like structure of the school in Broken Branch, it is impossible for the students and teachers throughout the school to know if he has accomplices or is acting alone, and for most of them, the actions are also unknown to them as they wait in an intense lockdown.

The story opens with Holly Baker, a young woman who is lying in a hospital bed in Arizona after suffering serious injuries in a fire. Recovering from burns, grafts, and the anxiety of separation from her two children, Augie and P. J., Holly's angst intensifies when she receives a call from her daughter Augie. She says she is in a closet in the school at Broken Branch--where she is staying with Holly's parents--and a man is shooting.

From there, readers are shown the intensity of the situation in alternating points of view as the narrators tell the taut story as it unfolds. From Holly, helpless in Arizona, to Meg, a police officer with her own issues, we come to know the fear, the helplessness, and the mystery of each of them, and wonder, as they do, why, in this previously safe community, someone would do this horrendous thing. Augie's voice tells the story of her family, as well as her fears in this situation, just as we learn more about the teacher, Mrs. Oliver, in whose classroom the gunman waits, his agenda and his story totally unknown.

Breathtaking, the short intense chapters lead the reader to the startling conclusion, asking these questions and more: Who is this man and why has he targeted this school? Is he a disgruntled former student? Is he a parent in a bitter custody battle over a child? Or does he have no connection at all with any of these victims?

Aptly named, One Breath Away kept me rapidly turning pages, breathless with anticipation as I guessed one after the other of these possibilities as each red herring was introduced...until finally, I started to put it together just before the final reveal. A quick and captivating read, this one earned five stars.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Small Town Iowa School Shooting Rocks Community 11 juillet 2012

I have heard lots of excellent things about Heather Gudenkauf. This is her 3rd novel, with her first two best-selling novels being THESE THINGS HIDDEN and THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE. Gudenkauf lives in Iowa and this book is set in a fictitious small town in Iowa. Throughout the story, she also refers to real places in Iowa that I know well. The school and community she writes about could easily be the small town I live in, which made the story easy for me to relate to. As a mom and someone who works in a school, I easily became emotional throughout the story. Gudenkauf grabbed my attention right away and kept me interested all the way to the end.

Each chapter focuses on one character which I love because the chapters are very short and gives us the story from each of their point of view. It makes you want to keep reading and keeps it easy to read "one more chapter". Soon you have read 15 more chapters. The story moves along quickly and I could have easily read this in one sitting if I had only had the time.

With the chapters focusing on each character's perspective, you are able to get a better feel for their personalities. The author found ways to describe the background and history of each character by weaving it into the story rather than reading pages of information to understand where the character comes from. I was easily able to picture Will, Augie, Mrs. Oliver and Meg which made the story even more personal.

Throughout the story, you are thinking the gunman is one person, and then you are swayed to think it is another, until very close to the end, the real gunman is revealed and your jaw drops and you think, "I never saw that coming!". Those are the kind of stories that make me want to talk about them with someone else! This would be a great book club choice as there are lots of dynamics to discuss including family relationships, divorce, small towns, and schools.

Heather Gudenkauf wrote this story after a shooting happened on the University of Iowa campus while she was a senior. Even though she wasn't in the classroom, this event has left an impression on her life and has changed how she sees the world. She wrote ONE BREATH AWAY to explore the issue of school shootings and how they can draw or tear apart a community. I love finding new authors and she is one I will definitely be adding to my list.
