How can you be a kid and not own a copy of the 1001 Night? If you don’t, then you have been deprived of your childhood! 1001 tales told by Shahrzad the story teller indeed! But, there is a but! You must purchase a version of this book which is:

Translated properly
Well Written in English
Well Formatted
Well Illustrated
Fun to Read

This book is qualified to have them all. The crew has done a fine job creating this book. As an author and a journalist, speaking 5 languages, I will promise you that this is the best version and the most fun to read version of this book which you will find in English. I have read this book back in Iran when I was a child. I have read the Persian version and at that time, it was very joyful to read this. Every little child must know the tales told by the great Persian storyteller Shahrzad.

I purchased this for my little Sun Goddess as one of her Christmas presents. She was old enough to be able to read this book and it is surely a blast to read about all the amazing stories.

To read this book is like to read 35 different children story books! This is 35 books in one. Each story takes you away to faraway lands in the Middle East and Near East with amazing settings and amazing stories.

Sun Goddess strongly recommends it because it has passed her very finicky taste and she treasures this book as a solid base in her library.

McCaughrean has won awards for her skill at retelling ancient folk tales, and this collection by her is no exception. If you're looking for a collection of stories that are politically correct books about ancient Arabia, this is not it. But if you're looking for a set of stories about ancient Arabia -- humorous and wise and with a warning of falling prey to vice -- and can enjoy a tale for the tale's sake, taking from them an understanding of culture, and why current views are what they are and learn from them, then read on indeed!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting an enjoyable and easy way to draw conclusions of political, social, and cultural aspects of this time period during the Islamic Golden Age. McCaughrean managed to compile one thousand nights of stories and translations into an almost three hundred page book. Even so, the author was able to convey a years old folk tale that came out of ancient and medieval times and allow the reader to easily comprehend it.

I found this book to be a quick read as I was able to finish it in one day. The ever so interesting and intertwined stories kept me coming back, and there was never a point when I was un intrigued. Hearing from others who read this book, they had the same thoughts as it is an enlightening and historical adventure. I encourage everyone to read this enriching tale as it can be used for educational or pleasure reading.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent version for reading out loud 2 juin 2010

I was looking for a version of the story that I could read out loud with my 7yo daughter to give her an introduction to the monumental work. Although more "authentic" translations such as Burton's may be nice for the highly literate adult, there is no way that I could tolerate reading it out loud to someone. It would have been nice to have more of the stories included, but many of the major ones are in place and creat the jumping off place for literary discussion of the origin of some of our more modern tales to which a child would have been exposed.

If you are looking for a lighter version of the stories or want a quicker read to get an overview of the historial relevance, this version is for you. If you are wanting to read out loud, this is a nice version. If you are looking for the full force, heavy duty experience, then this is not for you. Go find Burton's multi-volume set.

I like some of the sly comments that the author Geraldine slipped into her retelling of the tales. In the story of the jinni and the fisherman, I'm quite sure that in the original the fisherman didn't make all the clever insults that goaded the jinni to get back into the bottle. It was brilliant and hilarious!!!
