Présentation de l'éditeur

When the wealthy and handsome Fitzwilliam Darcy encounters the beautiful and lively Elizabeth Bennet at a small country ball, he loudly refuses to dance with her, declaring her to be merely tolerable. Fortunately for Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth has walked away and does not overhear his insult, thus snagging the thread that would have sealed her prejudice against the prideful stranger. Unexpectedly, circumstances thrust Elizabeth into the same household as Mr. Darcy, and her proximity unwittingly proves tempting, as her tantalizing wit and playfulness evoke desires that threaten to unravel his resolve against her. In this delightful re-imagining of Jane Austen's beloved classic, Pride and Prejudice, the players are the same, but the rules have changed as the dance between Darcy and Lizzy unfolds.

Was a bit reticent about buying this, mainly because of the whimsical title. But, very pleasant surprise, as this is one of the best P&P spin-offs. First, the English grammar and usage is really above the average level, even compared to books of a different genre. There are a few discrepencies where some modern american terms have been used, but fortunately not too overly so (I find this irritating, language written used at certain periods ought to be consistant; yes, I am a somewhat severe critic).
The plot and introduction of new characters and scenarios is fairly belivable and works quite well in this book.
Look forward the reading the author's next book and encourage you to do the same!

Take your favorite Jane Austen novel, reimagine each character as a warm-blooded three dimensional being, then layer in fun, richly described details of both your favorite Pride and Prejudice scenes as well as new glimpses into the lives of Darcy and Elizabeth that make you fall in love with them all over again. That's my take on One Thread Pulled.

The characterization is amazing. While retaining their "Austen-y" essence, Ms. Oaks has given every player additional dimension and created softer, more realistic versions of each. They are both more maddening and more sympathetic than I can recall in any other P&P fiction (and I've read more than my share). Many of my favorite folks had a wicked good sense of humor that really added to my enjoyment of the novel.

The book reads so quickly that I had finished it before I knew it. One Thread Pulled is full of literary and historical references that weave a richly described tapestry of Regency life. In every chapter, the author has offered layers of nuanced foreshadowing that made me squeal in delight as I found them. It is really well constructed.

The story does not leave off where one would generally expect, but I think it does provide a glimpse into a more realistic Regency era ending than one usually gets in this type of novel. I do hope that Ms. Oaks continues in a sequel. I loved, loved, loved this book and recommend it without qualification.

I have read nearly two hundred different Pride and Prejudice variations at least once. One Thread Pulled is one of the excellent ones. It's long, which I like, but never drags. The detail in the story-line and the development of the characters gave me so much pleasure and cost me so much sleep until I finished it. . ., and then until I finished it again. I relished every morsel and eagerly look forward to many more Elizabeth and Darcy works by this a accomplished new author. Thank you for the pleasure.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An excellent what-if story!! 21 septembre 2012

This is probably one of my favorite Pride and Prejudice what-if story. What if Elizabeth does not hear Darcy speak those insulting comments to Bingley during the Assembly? By not hearing these remarks her instant dislike and prejudice of Darcy does not occur. Even though she is not predisposed to dislike him, she still finds him to be aloof and haughty. Darcy is very much the typical regency gentleman that Jane Austen wrote him as. He still said Elizabeth wasn't tolerable enough to tempt him, he still doesn't dance with anyone besides his own party, and he still gives the impression that he believes himself above the Meryton townspeople.

This story very much felt like reading the characters straight from canon, but it is a completely original journey the author created. The characterization of the characters are straight on and when their actions deviate from canon, it is entirely believable. Although Darcy struggles with his growing feelings for Elizabeth, they are able to form a friendship and bond with the help of her openness to understand him... and his dog :)

One Thread Pulled is written in the time frame of where Pride and Prejudice starts to just before Christmas. In this time, Darcy and Elizabeth grow close and fall in love. Mr Collins, Caroline, and Lady Catherine aspire to cause trouble. Colonel Fitzwilliam is brought into town and we get the opportunity to see more of Anne de Bourgh. I enjoyed getting to know each character and loved to hate the "villains." If you like Colonel Fitzwilliam then you'll love this one!

One of the great things about this book is that it is a full length novel and very detailed in descriptions. The author has such a way with words that you really feel and understand what Darcy and Elizabeth feel. It's definitely a page turner and a well thought out story. In addition, I did think the story ended fine with their engagement. As stated in the title, it is Volume One of a series, which means there will be at least a second book. With that in mind there won't be an epilogue of them married and having 2.5 kids. I personally can't wait for the second book to see how Elizabeth fares in London and what happens during their engagement.

I highly recommend reading this. It is an exceptionally well written story.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 An enjoyable read 16 août 2012

I purchased the book today and finished it today. It was by no means short in length; I was just enjoying it too much. It was interesting to see a funny Mr. Darcy who had a very playful side. However the ending was hurried. I feel that there must be a sequel in the works as there is a lot of things left unwritten.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Best P&P Variation I have read in a long time! 30 août 2012

I loved this book. It starts out with a very simple change to Austen's story but that one change has a dramatic affect on the story and in a VERY good way. Not only were the conversations between Darcy & Elizabeth wonderful but so were nearly all of the interactions between the other characters. I have read hundreds of sequels/prequels/variations to P&P but this one easily ranks in my top 5! I have to admit that one or two of the situations were a little far fetched but overall they were easily overlooked give how well written and engaging this story was. I am really hoping that Diana Oaks writes quickly and brings us the next installment of the wonderful book. Bravo!
