Présentation de l'éditeur

Design, deploy, and maintain your own private or public Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), using the open source OpenStack platform. In this practical guide, experienced developers and OpenStack contributors show you how to build clouds based on reference architectures, as well as how to perform daily administration tasks.

Designed for horizontal scalability, OpenStack lets you build a cloud by integrating several technologies. This approach provides flexibility, but knowing which options to use can be bewildering. Once you complete this book, you’ll know the right questions to ask while you organize compute, storage, and networking resources. If you already know how to manage multiple Ubuntu machines and maintain MySQL, you’re ready to:

  • Set up automated deployment and configuration
  • Design a single-node cloud controller
  • Use metrics to improve scalability
  • Explore compute nodes, network design, and storage
  • Install OpenStack packages
  • Use an example architecture to help simplify decision-making
  • Build a working environment to explore an IaaS cloud
  • Manage users, projects, and quotas
  • Tackle maintenance, debugging, and network troubleshooting
  • Monitor, log, backup, and restore

HASH(0x87e515ac) étoiles sur 5 A Dead Tree Version of an Existing Website 15 octobre 2014

Vast sections of this book already exists online. Entire sections are copied verbatim from the Openstack Operations Guide (right down to the titles of the appendixes).

If you want an offline version of the website then by all means purchase this book. Otherwise there is scant new information in this book.

This book does a very good job of explaining OpenStack and providing examples of all the core components. It is not, however, a runbook. If you are a sys admin who is building an OpenStack cluster for the first time, then this is not the right book for you. I suggest following the very well thought out tutorial on and then use this as a companion.

First, a disclaimer: I don’t intend to build an OpenStack cloud in the immediate future, nor do I currently operate one. But with the topic being trendy and having picked this Guide at user group meeting I am sharing a few comments.

There is something to be said for the sprint mode of writing, which is the way this Guide was developed. In the past multiple authors usually meant each one writing a chapter or two without much coordination, often leading to a disjointed end result. But after being “locked together” for a week or so along with dynamic collaboration, this bunch actually produced a nicely flowing Guide.

As a newbie to cloud deployments I enjoyed the architectural overview in the first part. Considerable amount of detailed references and operational advice follows in part II, Operations. Glossary is very useful for those entering this field. No issues with the fact that some of this material is already available on line. That’s to be expected, especially for an open development environment. This guide provides a lot of value through its organization, synthesis of otherwise voluminous info, and additional references. Definitely a handy guide for when I do my first OpenStack cloud roll out.
HASH(0x87fb1390) étoiles sur 5 Book lacks necessary depth and is held back by editorial misses or choices 11 janvier 2015
Par Charles Profitt - Publié sur
Format: Broché
Fairly in-depth book on Open stack that lacked sufficient specifics to really help understand the concepts behind OpenStack. In particular I found some of diagrams appeared to have been created in color, but when converted to grayscale for printing it was impossible to tell which lines were which. The use of dotted lines or dashes should have been used. I also found the chapter on network design to be less than useful. There was no comparison / contrast / discussion of how or why to design the network in a particular way.

While the book serves as a conceptual introduction to OpenStack I do not see it as useful for getting started with OpenStack. The operations aspect was a little better, but without a solid understanding of the reasons for design decision the book lacks the overall quality I have come to expect from an O'Reilly book.
