HASH(0x9a3815f4) étoiles sur 5 Great Stuff, but there are Better Versions 21 novembre 2012

Zelenka is a very interesting Baroque composer -- a bit of a shape-shifter, sounding Bach-like one moment, then making like Handel or Albinoni before finally taking off with a highly original voice that sounds like no one else. As noted by the previous reviewer, this boxed set consists of reissues of recordings from the 1970s of some orchestral works and the six trio sonatas performed by Camerata Bern, Heinz Holliger and friends. They are generally considered classic peformances and deservedly so, though I have to admit that to me their age shows a bit in the sonics, which are a bit muffled to my untrained ear. In my opinion, the period instrument renditions of Zelenka's complete orchestral works on three discs from CPO by Das Neu-Eroffnete Orchestre are simply superior both in sound and performance. Meanwhile, Holliger took a another shot years later at the complex and difficult trio sonatas. That effort, on ECM, outshines these earlier versions. So while this boxed set in question contains some landmark recordings, they are recordings that in my view have since been eclipsed: For the Trio Sonatas, go with Holliger on ECM; and for the orchestral pieces, try the set on CPO.

Re-released by Universal Records here are the "original" Zelenka Orchestral Works as done by Heinz Holliger et al. This is the standard by which interpretations of Zelenka are compared. A must for any Baroque fan.

HASH(0x9aabf648) étoiles sur 5 Nice Introduction To Music Of Zelenka 22 juillet 2015
Par JohnK - Publié sur Amazon.com

The strength of this 5-disc set is the collection of trio sonatas on the last two discs, brilliantly performed by Heinz Holliger, Maurice Bourgue, and Klaus Thunemann. These trio sonatas are spirited and surprisingly intricate, and can easily stand comparison with the trio sonatas of Handel. I find the orchestral works on the first three discs somewhat less interesting, and the recording quality given to Camerata Bern is also sub-par. Nonetheless, the set is affordably-priced and provides a nice introduction to a lesser-known composer. Fans of Baroque music or oboe-playing need not hesitate.

Zelenka was a contemporary of JS Bach, and they even dined together. Zelenka's music is beautiful, but you have to hear it several times before you can fully grasp it. His themes are full of twists and turns and key changes. You can hear his influence in WF Bach's compositions. This recording has a lot of Zelenka's most famous pieces and I downloaded it to my phone from Amazon. It's a great collection to listen to if you need to extend your thoughts and desire to have better focus.
