Présentation de l'éditeur

This first volume of the Inspector George Gently Collection comprises the original two novels that established Gently as one of Scotland Yard's fictional finest.

These are the stories on which the hit BBC TV series was based, written with a charm that conveys Alan Hunter's love of the East Anglian setting and demonstrating his expert use of dialogue to keep the plot moving along at a cracking pace.

The first of Gently's cases, Gently Does It, has him enduring the holiday from hell when he is caught up in a mysterious murder and locks horns with the local police over their handling of the affair. In the second book, Gently By The Shore, other people's holidays are disturbed when Gently is called in to investigate the discovery of a body on a pleasure beach.

Biographie de l'auteur

Alan Hunter was born in Hoveton, Norfolk in 1922. He left school at the age of 14 to work on his father's farm, spending his spare time sailing on the Norfolk Broads and writing nature notes for the Eastern Evening News. He also wrote poetry, some of which was published while he was in the RAF during World War II. By 1950, he was running his own book shop in Norwich and in 1955, he wrote the first of 45 George Gently novels. He died in 2005 aged 82.

The book was well written second plot a bit iffy .Only problem was that they were a bit slow and needed to be a bit deeper in explaining the different settings

Story is set in the 1950s in a very different England from today. Well written and engaging plot. Slow and well paced rhythm

Alan Hunter was very clear about not liking to be criticised for something he never intended to write. What he wrote, in these stories, was the how and why of police work, the procedural, slightly mundane, everyday footslogging stuff which all policemen have to wade through to get at the facts. I have read six of the novels so far and am quite addicted to the T.V. series as well, so it would be fair to say I am quite a fan. I like the wry touches of humour and pathos woven into the tales - the image of Gently sitting at the back of the room and surreptitiously blowing smoke rings at a Scotland Yard detective's ear cracked me up, it is so easily imagined. (Revenge for being ignored even though it was his case.) Being English probably helps, but I think these books would appeal to any police/crime aficionado.

Having seen all but one of the Gently broadcasts on television, I read this two-volume collection in order to find out more about Mr. Gently. I wasn't disappointed, and I plan to read others in this series. I usually read non-fiction, so I'm not sure to whom I would recommend this volume. For novices to mystery reading like myself, it's probably a great introduction to that genre. The author is skilled with words, turns a graceful phrase now and again, and the story goes down a treat.

HASH(0x8953aac8) étoiles sur 5 I found the books to be much better than the TV series 17 juin 2015

Very cerebral, and very British. Gently is Scotland yard the way we thought it would be. I found the books to be much better than the TV series. The TV series of course included graphic violence which is the business of TV apparently, and in addition, the TV series lacks the depth of the books. Yes, the books are slow to unfold, and very subdued, which is part of the charm of Hunter's writing. I had read one book before I watched one episode of the TV series, and I would recommend reading the books as well as watching the dramatic adaptation. Both are good, but different.

We have a subscription to Acorn the British T.V channel on our Roku t.v system. That's where we discovered the very honorable George Gently Detective program. As luck would have it, a few weeks of watching ran us out of the programs, the character. George Gently is really very interesting though and I wanted to keep up with the tales. That's where this very good book falls in, If you're a a Fan, You'll enjoy this book as much as I have. I don't want to review the tales because I dislike knowing too much, Just read the book, You'll enjoy it.

Got it right away and it was a great story. If you like Sherlock Holmes or Inspector Lewis you will like Inspector George Gently.
