Présentation de l'éditeur

The Hayden War has ended and now SOLCOM and the Alliance are face to face in talks, but neither side has the slightest idea what happened in the ultimate battle of the war. Amid political jockeying and diplomatic gamesmanship, Captain Sorilla Aida has been given an assignment : Find a weakness to exploit, buy SOLCOM time to learn just what the hell happened to Valkyrie, and make sure that the Alliance isn't prepared to risk another conflict in the open.

Sorilla has problems of her own, however, and after losing so much in the war she isn't as certain of her life choices as she used to be. Unfortunately for her, the Alliance, SOLCOM, and others don't intend to let her have time to figure it out for herself.

The Hayden War is over, the Cold War is just beginning.

By Other Means is the fifth book in the On Silver Wings series

The author has two great series that are built around the concept of humans standing against powerful aliens. This style and imagination has built those two universes that are really captivating and I am looking forward to reading the next book.

HASH(0x939bd210) étoiles sur 5 Meh. Previous Books in Series Were Much Better 23 avril 2014
Par Dave - Publié sur
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
When I read the first book in the series, On SIlver Wings, I was blown away (which reminds me, I really need to go write a review for the others). Second book, just as good, third book, almost as good (4.5 stars), and the fourth book, the best yet. Would rate it six stars if I could.

This one, though...meh. First, it could have easily been 4-5 chapters in another book. Not only was it short, word/page wise, but the overall scenario, situation was short. It was not what I would consider a novel, nor even a novella.

Second, the grammar and spelling errors, and word mis-usage, were much worse in this. The rest of teh books in the series felt as if they were professionally edited. This one, well, no. It felt like a self-published kindle book, with numerous mistakes throughout, which always bothers me.

Third, well, it just didn't grab me like the other books did. The scale of the action was much smaller, more intimate, and while some like that, and I usually do, this just didn't work for me. It didn't grab me, didn't pull me in, and make me frantically read page after page after page.

Finally, the aliens just didn't feel alien. When Sorilla was wandering around the staion, it felt, to me, like she was wandering around any neighborhood on Earth. The aliens felt like Star Trek aliens, you know, the kind that look and act human, except for some slightly odd facial feature (scarred nose, green skin, etc...) . No sense of wonder to them, or mystery, unlike the first four books.

Having said all that, it was still enjoyable, and I will certainly buy the next book in the series, in hopes that it is better. Evan, your books are in general great, and I have enjoyed this series, and your other series (Odyssey One). I hope that your quality of writing improves back to where it was in the first four books in this series.

HASH(0x9ba28b1c) étoiles sur 5 Plot turns from hot to cold 8 mai 2014

Some SPOILERS herein...

"By Other Means", as the title implies, has Captain Sorilla Aida joining the diplomatic team as a 'bodyguard' to the SOLCON Ambassador negotiating the truce with the Alliance worlds. Aida's actual duties include cultural information gathering with the purpose of identifying weaknesses in the Alliance. The good news for Solcon is that the Alliance is fraught with factions but the bad news is that at least two groups if not more want to use the humans to destroy the truce, including killing everyone on the ship and/or station and get the hot war started again. Ultimately circumstances places Aida working alongside her old enemy Kriss (plus other interesting new characters from both the Alliance and SOLCOM worlds) when the Aida style kick-a$$ mayhem finally breaks out.

My only serious complaint is that BOM is a little short on pages compared to the others in the series which was a disappointment as I read the entire novel in just a few hours. Also, I'm a little worried about where Currie is going with this new story arc as I'm not a fan of cold war style spy thrillers. I highly suggest one read the earlier books in the series first, particularly the first book "On Silver Wings" that remains my favorite.

I note other reviewers' remarks about grammar and spelling errors. I guess that is true but I only recall being jerked from the story one time for a grammar error. Unfortunately I've become inured to all kinds of errors as I rarely find any self published or small publishing house book that is not full of errors. My pet peeve are lazy authors who can't keep their subjective, possessive & objective pronouns straight but I think Currie passed that low bar.

4 stars because the earlier books were better.

HASH(0x939e56b4) étoiles sur 5 Development of Aida spoiled by typos and miscapitalization 27 avril 2014
Par Robert Davidson - Publié sur
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
Enjoyable novel developing Aida, fun science under pressure climax, but for $4.99/copy a popular author should be able to hire an editor who can tell why not capitalizing the first letter of a sentence in dialog is wrong, as well as errors like:
"toss there way" instead of "toss their way"
"if the presence of a Master of Ships was present, ..."
" the most cost efficient want to destabilize " instead of " the most cost efficient way to destabilize "
"shock to the psyche of ever serving spacer" instead of "shock to the psyche of every serving spacer"
If you can get past that, you can enjoy a novel that incorporates economics, psychology, strategy and science.

HASH(0x9379e240) étoiles sur 5 Desperately needs a proofreader 27 avril 2014
Par Steven P. Herrmann - Publié sur

My one star rating has little to do with the writing or the story. It is due to the incredible number of errors in the text (this is the Kindle version, in case there may be others). Not spelling errors, it's been through the spell checker, but way too many grammatical errors, wrong words correctly spelled, glaring punctutaion errors, etc. I give some examples below, if you are interested. The problem I have is that 95% of these errors could have been caught and corrected by a simple proof-read - even a 12 year old would have caught most of this stuff. Sure, I can eventually figure out from context what the author is trying to say, but I shouldn't have to, it's annoying!! As a reader, I feel disrespected, even insulted, that the author or publisher, etc., could not take such a basic step. I understand that in these days of self-published authors, the editor and staff are missing, but still, I was constantly annoyed trying to read this book.

As far as the writing goes, if you like Currie's other stuff you will like this one. It's not the large scale fleet battles kind of story, but a much smaller personal scale. I definitely do NOT recommend you read this book first, it does not work as a stand alone. Read the previous works in the series first.

All in all I enjoy this author and the series, but every few pages there was another example that just made me want to throw my Kindle against the wall!!

Just for example, on the very first page: "the woman beside him barely resemble the hardened soldier...", not resembled. A few pages later "Sorilla didn't really know if she wanted if she wanted to fix it." . Later on the main character asks an alien "Light Years?", to which he replies ""Year" Soun shrugged, "Don't know the word"" Yet just a few pages later the same alien responds to another question with "Alliance law gives protection for five years, but some...". Later on "and while not insular per sey, they were hardly the most outgoing race.." This one DID get past the spell checker! I know this sounds a bit petty, but I am used to reading well-written, and well edited books, and I don't think I should be expected to put up with this kind of crap.

Good story, but not a good book, and Holy Mother of God is the editing awful!
I am a huge Evan Currie fan. I consider him a top tier author, with rich characters, brilliant pace, complex stories, depth and believability. This story though, is not up to par. Actually the story is good. Good concept, inventive, with likable (though far to humanistic) characters, and artfully told. But its just barely getting going when you reach the end of the book. It's abusive to the fan club to be mistreated so!

As for the editing. Wow. It's rare to find something so bad. I stopped counting after 30 or so major errors....and then I reached the end of Chapter 1. I get the impression that this book was written in two or three stages, separated by months or perhaps years. The story itself has good continuity, but the typing of it was atrocious. There were so many jarring, disorienting mistakes, that it became hard to read! Instances of where the author typed He instead of She, or changed the spelling of main character names, or simply used the wrong words that where off by not just one letter, but several. It is unbelievable that no one read this book before it was published. I am by no means a master literary editor, but I could have done a better job editing this book while reading it backwards in a mirror!

I love Sorilla Aida. She's a brilliant character with incredible potential. I greatly enjoy Evan Currie's books, and I appreciated the development of the plot line in this novelette, but this is not a good book.
