HASH(0x8cb9c960) étoiles sur 5 This is JUST what I want from a short story collection. Not a single clunker. 9 août 2013

It shouldn't be surprising that I love this Kindle collection of SF/F short stories from Emma Bull and Will Shetterly. After all, for decades I have gone out of my way to read everything that Bull has written, ever since I found her War for the Oaks at the SF bookstore in Harvard Square, with a placard below it shouting STAFF FAVORITE. (Surely it is among my most-often-reread novels, along with Heinlein's The Door into Summer and Steven Brust's Yendi... the "comfort food" books that never grow old to us.) I've read less of Shetterley's work, oddly enough, but have good vibes about his storytelling too.

You'll feel the same way after reading their combined selection of recent short stories. Some of these appeared in other anthologies previously, though I never encountered them. While any such set of tales varies quite a bit (we all like one more than another), the "worst" of the stories is an only-okay 3-stars, which means I never felt I was wasting my time.

The best of these -- "Silver and Gold," Bull's take on "the witch on a quest to save the prince" -- is not just great fantasy, but lovely lovely writing. For example, she eloquently captures the grief of losing someone: "What she did was to sit where she was [...] watching the dark seep in and fill the room around her. Sorrow and despair rose and fell in her in a slow rhythm, like the shortening and lengthening of days. When her misery peaked, she would almost week, almost shriek, almost throw the drum from her. Then it would begin to wane, and she would think, No, I can bear it, until it turned to waxing once again." You see why I love her writing so much?

Some of these are fun (how could "The Princess Who Kicked Butt" not be?), others more serious. It will keep you diverted for quite some time. Recommended.

HASH(0x8cb9cc30) étoiles sur 5 a mixed bag but worth reading 4 juin 2014

I have to admit that the first half of the book, which were all stories by Will Shetterly was good but not thrilling. Then the stories by Emma Bull began and the magic awakened. The last two stories, "Joshua Tree" and "Silver or Gold" are superlative. Joshua Tree is "low fantasy" (it takes place in our world) and the voice of the narrator, Tabetha, rings true and strong. Her description of a military town in the desert and base vs townie politics in high school nails it. I will read it again before too long just to revisit her voice. Silver or Gold is more a fairytale story and gets the voice of that genre perfect pitch as well. An intrepid country witch sets out to find the lost prince. She has adventures and speaks many truths. I will not soon forget her either. The kindle edition has no table of contents so re-reading single stories will be harder than it needs to be.
HASH(0x8cb9cbf4) étoiles sur 5 A collection of two halves 2 août 2015

This is a collection of two halves, the first half by Will Shetterley and the second half by Emma Bull. There's a strong contrast between the tones. Shetterley's stories are much lighter, like a modern-day Frederic Brown. Bull's are notably darker, more of a William Gibson feel if William Gibson wrote urban fantasy. (By that I mean: beautiful, complex prose; protagonists who tend to be alienated or at least unhappy, situated very much in a place and time, and embedded in popular culture; descriptions which maybe go on a bit too long, to the detriment of pacing.)

As a matter of personal taste, though I admire Bull tremendously, I'd rather read Shetterley. At the same time, the stories I'll remember are the Bull stories.

The first thing I thought was "Why didn't they put Emma's stories first." I mean, Will Shetterly is good but Emma wrote _War for the Oaks_ (moment of silence)

But his stories were very good and the fact that hers were, mostly, better doesn't change that. And some of his stories were fives and not _all_ of hers were. But all of the stories and both of the poems are well worth reading. There is a fairy-tale quality to most of the stories and that might cause a problem for some of you but otherwise, you are going to love it.

Run out and read anything by Emma Bull and I can promise you that you won't be disappointed. Her command of the language is without equal and she reading her work is always like gorging on the most sumptuous of feasts. This collection is not to be missed!
