5.0 étoiles sur 5 Love story with a twist... 9 avril 2014

The Poppy Fields by Author D.G. Torrens

Emily Matthews is a young woman who is very devoted to her work at a charitable organization that raises funds to help wounded soldiers as they return from the battlefield. Some are amputees...but all of the survivors who benefit from her organization have been scarred one way or the other, whether physically or emotionally. The effects of war and the negative consequences are near and dear to Emily's heart. She lost the love of her life, Robby, to the war in Afghanistan and after two long and lonely years, she still mourns his loving absence from her life. Now Emily is reluctant to ever fall in love again and is determined to close her heart to such a possibility. Every year she spends time in the much loved poppy field near her home where she relives one of her fondest memories of better times with Robby.

James Harrison, on the other hand, is in his late twenties and a former rifleman who experienced three tours of duty in Afghanistan. He returns to the UK after being injured in battle and receives new training as a physiotherapist. He is also a man whose heart has been broken. James has been in a previous serious relationship with long time girlfriend, Naomi, who decided she no longer wanted to live in Benton Cross. She subsequently leaves to pursue a career in London and James is emotionally crushed when they go their separate ways. He is determined to immerse himself in his work as he caters to the wounded survivors of war. However, in a local bookstore as he peeks up between the shelves of books, he is intrigued and captivated by the most incredible eyes looking back at him...

From then on, an enticing love story ensues between these two very reticent and awe struck individuals. Of course, they certainly meet their fair share of challenges which readily entice the reader as their relationship unfolds...

Author D.G. Torrens is fast becoming a seasoned author with several well-written novels now published. I have had the honor of reading and reviewing two others and "The Poppy Fields" is another crowd pleaser with its many unpredictable twists and turns. I truly enjoy a good love story and this one certainly fits the bill. There are plenty of historical facts and medical data included to spice up the story line and give this fictional novel the required authenticity. There is a cliff hanger at the end of this easy-to-read romantic novel, therefore, I know there is more "good stuff" to come! I can't wait to read the next installment...

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Equally good as the previous... 20 avril 2014

This is my 2nd time I have read and review DG Torrens works. Each time, I discovered new surprises, twists and perspectives. This book is no different. Although I am more of a paranormal romance cum fantasy writer, I am also into the romantic drama genre. As I read into 50% of the book, I fell for the main character, Emily. Without going further into the story, the whole kindle book is properly formatted. The layout is well spaced on my Kindle Fire HD tablet.

This novel has a modern setting with a dramatic background of the poppy fields. There are some scenes of war from the character James. I liked the way the author described how the main character, Emily suffered by the poppy fields, and how she may have fallen for James.

What I like best of this novel is the balance of between drama and romance scenes. There are scenes of how Emily is treating those wounded soldiers, how Emily lost the interest for love, and she is determined to spend her life doing her charity until she met James. I find the end is quite dramatic. I urge readers in search of pure romance with some plot-twisting to consider this novel.

If there's one thing I'd change about this book, it would be to the book cover... I would hope the author would add an image of Emily in the background as she is the main character. It will entice more people to want to read this book. Overall, the plot is well-structured with a balance of dialogues and action. I liked it as equally good as the previous...

D G Torrens. Book 1
The Poppy Fields
Follow Emily and James on there journey of life. Emily is recovering from the loss of her boyfriend in Afghanistan 2 years earlier, and James is an ex rifleman with 3tours of Afghanistan under his belt. James now works as a physiotherapist to the men who come back injured from there combats. You will love this book from start to finish, and the ending will leave you gob smacked. Once again D G Torrens has written a 5 star novel. I can't wait for the 2nd book in the series.

The Good:
I loved the general concept of this book: lovelorn woman with a broken heart and a tragic loss meets a man with a mission and a penchant for saving the broken. They're both attached in different ways to the military -- she as a charity worker for veterans, and he as a physical therapist to injured soldiers returning from war. One major problem to keep them apart: James is still active duty, and military life is unpredictable at best.

This author obviously has a great heart for the military and the soldiers affected by life at war, along with the families of the injured and the lost. She also put a lot of effort into researching the various topics and time periods covered throughout the story, which I appreciated.

The Bad:
The writing style of this author was a bit staccato for me, with lots of short blunt sentences that made me feel at times as if I were reading something more akin to a textbook than a novel. The facts were laid out, but there wasn't a lot of flowing prose. For some people this isn't an issue, as many readers seem to prefer a no-nonsense style. I, however, love good flowing prose, so I was missing that here. The dialogue was somewhat stilted at times as well, with a noticeable lack of contraction use that made the dialogue feel a little unnatural to me.

Plotwise, there wasn't just one major problem, there were several. Like, at least five. For me personally, there was A LOT of drama in this book; things were happening that, on their own, would have had great impact on me emotionally, but piled up the way they were ... I sort of became numb to it. I think that's just me though, as I tend to get overwhelmed by too much external drama and prefer the more quiet changes present in a story more focused on the changing dynamics of character development.

The Ugly:
This book could do with another round of strong editing, which is what bumped this possibly four star read down to a solid three for me. Even allowing for the differences between British and American grammar rules, there was a lot to be desired in the editing of this book. Misplaced commas, sentences that should have ended but didn't, and one's that ended that shouldn't have were pretty common ... as an author myself, it made me wonder what this author's current editor's qualifications were.

The End Result?
A review is only one person's opinion, and there are several varying opinions found here in the reviews of this book. Even after reading all of them, you'd still be left to make your own decision. Make it wisely.

When I first started to read this book, I knew it would be one of deep passion—the vision this author paints of the poppy fields was a perfect setting for what had been and what was going to transpire. Torrens style has a way of gripping at the heart and maybe even tearing it a bit too. A beautiful love story—I’m anxiously awaiting book 2 in this powerful and poignant series.
