A Fantastic update to the Pretty Things(Historically Disputed) Rolling Stone Magazine "Album of the Year" from 1970......taken as a "re-make" or not, the disc is one of the FINEST Modern Day Rock n' Roll Long-Plays released in years......With the return of LONG-MISSED Member Peter Tolson (the Band's 1970's era Axe Slinger Guitar God who actually joined the Band soon after the release of the Album/replacing Vic Unitt on Guitar)back in the fold that ALONE makes picking this pup up all worth your while on it's own......along w/Wally Waller's GORGEOUS production work (where he has created some Brilliant tweaks & expansions to MANY of the tracks)....this Album is AMAZING (& this from a HUGE PT's fan that cared little for NEITHER Modern Day release of "Balboa Island" nor "Rage Before Beauty")

The XPT's SOUND like they had a GREAT-TIME recording this & their playing is Veteran SPECIAL throughout.....Although Waller & Jon Povey ARE NOT Phil May ("Pretty Things" wise)for Lead Vocals, the Singing (ESPECIALLY those "special" Harmonies.....)grades out from Good to AMAZING on the Entire cycle.....& Pete Tolson.....well ALL one can say is WELCOME BACK to the Game Sir'.....If you can find us a SUPERIOR Guitar oriented Rock Album this good in the last twenty-25 years or so (Pretty Things or not!!).....then PLEASE do-tell!!
Rock n' Roll, ~EW

The Pretty Things may be the most underrated group out of the original British Invasion. They were originally a blues/R&B based group along the lines of the Stones and Yardbirds. With the addition of keyboardist Jon Povey and bassist Alan "Wally" Waller, they expanded into a more versatile group that combined Merseybeat with West Coast folk rock and surf music sounds. Think of the music of the Beatles, Byrds, and Beach Boys mixed with Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Slim Harpo, and the other blues greats of the 50s. Parachute was to the Beatles "Abbey Road" as SF Sorrow was to "Sgt. Peppers". It had a hard rock sound with manic drumming like the Who and some Hendrix like guitar riffs. Lead vocals were shared with original vocalist Phil May, Povey, and Waller. The line up of the reborn album has drummer Skip Alan (aka Alan Skipper) and guitarist Peter Tolson (he joined after Parachute replacing Victor Unitt of the Edgar Broughon Group) joining Povey and Waller. Phil May decided not to participate other than provide additional lyrics to "What's the Use". Povey and Waller each contributed an additional song. This would make a nice pairing to the Snapper reissue of Parachute. A live recording from the Olympia Theatre concert from January 1971 where Tolson does a blistering guitar solo on a live version of "Sickle Clowns" would be nice. That can be found on UTube.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A masterful revisting & reworking of a brilliant Rock album & a must have for every Pretty Things fan. 12 octobre 2015
Par stan menshic - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Parachute is 1 of the strongest rock albums from both 1970 & the Pretty Things & they have done a cracking job at reinterpreting the album. 3 of the original members who did the album are joined by ace guitarist Pete Tolsen who was their guitarist for 10 years right through the 1970's into 1980 (& who did a brilliant live version of Sickle Clowns in 1970 which can be viewed on Youtube). Is this effort worth it 100% Yes, if U Love the original album there is enough variation, experimentation & solid rocking soulful reworkings that it is an absolutely essential addition to the Pretties music catalogue.
Here is my totally subjective comparative evaluation track by track.
Scene 1: original version much stronger & longer, more punchy experimental rock (almost like Can) & a far more exciting intro for the album.
The Good Mr Square/ She was Tall: the new version is way better, twice as long & rockier.
The Rain Trilogy: original version better more subtle & cleaner harmonies & with the use of rain fx more atmospheric.
Miss Fay Regrets: original much better fluid rock & much better harmonies again.
Cries F. M. Circus: both versions are equally brilliant.
Grass: Same, the new version is 2 minutes longer with exceptional guitar & mellotron but the harmonies are not as sweet.
Sickle Clowns: both versions are equally brilliant.
She's a Lover: original version better with more liquid fluidity & harmonies.
What's the Use: the new version is ridiculously better, it is fully developed (rather than just a bridge) with added thematic lyrics from P. May & going for 8 minutes it even has Spanish acoustic guitar, & an excellent rock section with great keyboard & electric guitar work.
Parachute: loved the original but would say the new version betters it with its experimentation & harmonic interplay, a perfect coda.

So why 4 stars & not 5. Firstly it is commendable that they would so effectively revisit such a classic album & and do such a great job. However, as stated several songs are defiantly not up to the original versions namely Scene 1 which actually could have been replaced by the acoustic reworking from 2010 which has that same exciting propulsive acoustic guitar & great singing by Phil May which of course would be the perfect intro to the album as he co wrote and sang every song on the original Parachute album. Which leads me to the 2nd point it would have been stronger with more P. May involvement because when he does contribute to What's the Use the track lifts to totally new heights. Finally, Miss Fay Regrets new version is almost pedestrian blues pub rock where the original balanced between fragile fluidity & hard rock. Perhaps if J. Povey had of utilized a harpsichord to revisit the fragility it, or even bring a guest violinist it could have been up with the rest of the tracks.
This is never the less, a killer album & a masterful reworking. An awesome listen & enjoy it almost as much as the original.
