3.0 étoiles sur 5 For absolute beginners only 26 octobre 2016

This book isn't terrible, but as someone who read this between finishing AFF and actually getting my A License a few weeks later, my impression is as follows:

1) This is for absolute beginners only. If you've already passed AFF, then you won't learn much from this book. You're better off looking for books about canopy flight (Brian Germain's book is excellent) and other advanced topics.

2) Everything in this book is in the SIM, and the newest SIM (I have the 2016/17 version) is very clear and easy to use. Buy a print version of the SIM and you'll have a much easier time finding and digesting the information.

3) This book is a little outdated. I'm sure it was ground breaking when the 1st edition came out, but we're up to at least the 10th edition now...there are sources of more modern information out there and I feel your time is better spent studying those.

Good for the enthusiastic beginner. Some useful material in here to reinforce, but nothing beats experience. As you progress, check out Brian Germain's "The Parachute and It's Pilot". That has more technical details on canopy flight and will help you become a better canopy pilot and understand the dynamics of how your parachute works.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 EXCELLENT! A must-read for any new skydiver. 12 juillet 2005

One of the quotes in this book is "the difference between fear and respect is knowledge." As a newbie to skydiving I have (like many others, I'm sure) wanted to gather as much information as possible about the sport, how the equipment works, the safety features that have evolved over the years to keep skydivers safer. So I've done a lot of research, thumbed through a lot of books and paid very close attention at the dropzone where I'm training.

This book, unlike anything else I've seen, organizes the principles of skydiving and the descriptions of various seemingly every possible relevant point into a very easy-to-follow format. I'm about halfway through it now and the more I read, the more comfortable I am with everything. Poynter and Turoff seem to simply be reinforcing everything I've learned from my actual instructors (both AFF and tandem).

To the point, if you're considering skydiving, if you're new to the sport, if you're an instructor looking for resources to pass along to uneasy students, this is it... a fabulous companion to the training you'll get at your own dropzone.

Just getting into skydiving, this book is a great read. It will inform you about a lot about the sport, the equipment (past and present), the training and beyond. Being on it's 10th edition, you can see where some of the newer stuff was put in and the flow of the book becomes slightly contorted from time to time, but the information is there and most of it is very useful to a new or not-yet-skydiving person. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering or just beginning to skydive.

As someone just beginning skydiving training, this book, as an adjunct to the training materials from my dropzone and my instructors, has been very helpful to me in knowing what expect, great history of the sport, good reality of the risks, and a great reference. Thank you!
