Description du produit
Bruce Springsteen has played over a thousand shows across the last four decades, nearly all of which will live forever in the hearts and memories of the fans who attended. However, there are a handful of shows that are so well-known and legendary that they are referred to simply by one name: Agora, Passaic, and Winterland. These shows have become part of a Springsteen fans vernacular and used as a point of reference when discussing just about every aspect of Bruces career. These abbreviations of course refer to the following concerts Bruce and the E. Streeters performed in the wake of the Darkness album in 1978. Agora: The Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, OH, August 9, 1978; Passaic: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ, September 19, 1978; Winterland: The Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, December 15, 1978. In addition to all being from the same tour, they were also all broadcast live on the radio. And they were transmitted through the surrounding areas the Agora show was heard throughout the Mid West; Passiac was heard up and down the Northeast, and Winterland was broadcast in Northern California up through Seattle, Washington - indeed all areas that had supported Bruce in the first five years of his recording career, and through extended time between the Born to Run album and its 1978 follow-up, Darkness on the Edge of Town. The show presented on this 3 CD set, as performed in Passaic, New Jersey, on September 19th 1978, is perhaps the best of the bunch. Played on the first night of a 3 date run at the Capitol Theatre, it was the night before Bruces birthday on the 20th, and the party mood had begun

The complete set of five shows, in order are:
1. The Roxy: 7-7-1978, Los Angeles, CA.
2. The Agora: 8-9-1978, Cleveland, OH.
3. Capitol Theatre: 9-19-1978, Passaic, N.J.
4. Fox Theatre: 9-30-1978. Atlanta, GA.
5. Winterland: 12-15-1978, San Francisco, CA.
A correction to the track listing on “Passaic Night” (released as “Piece de Resistance” on LP and later by Crystal Cat under the PN title): This current release lists bonus tracks 8-12 on disc 3 as from The Roxy broadcast. This is not entirely correct. I recorded the Roxy show (KMET-FM) and tracks 10-12 are indeed from The Roxy but tracks 8-9 were not in that set nor do they appear in the other four 1978 broadcasts listed above. Crystal Cat lists their origin as from the show two nights later, Capitol Theatre, Passaic, N.J. on 9-21-1978.
My favorites of the five are of course Roxy, L.A. (since I live here) and Passaic. The extended intros to “Prove it All Night” and “Because the Night” make those song performances superior to others sans the intros. Also, what is listed as “Sad Eyes” added to “Backstreets” is really an early working of what later would become “Drive All Night” on The River. We all called Sad Eyes because no one knew the actual name. NOTE: This is not the same song “Sad Eyes” contained in the Tracks boxed set. Also, Winterland has a great live version of “The Fever”. As with Springsteen shows, none of these are identical sets.
Five Stars on all counts!
A month or so ago, someone told me that a lot of Springsteen's early concerts were available for download and CD. When I found the recording of the live broadcast from Passaic NJ in 1978, I bought it immediately. I listened as soon as it was delivered, and was transported back to the night I first heard this concert. I was 23 years old again, at least in my head and in my heart.
Having listened to my home recording for years, I was blown away by the sound quality on this recording. It is far superior to many of the live recordings I have collected over the years. The sound mix is excellent, with the instruments distinctly heard without drowning out the lyrics. It captures the magic of those early Springsteen concerts.
I am very pleased with this recording, and intend to pick up recordings of the other concerts in this series. Can't wait to hear them.
