Présentation de l'éditeur

Tony Fletcher's biography of the enigmatic quartet from Athens, Georgia, benefits not only from Tony's long association with the band but also by the co-operation of the band itself. However, R.E.M. - being R.E.M. - were disinclined to reveal this at the time the book was first published in 1989 and Tony was thus obliged to keep this under his hat. All such restrictions have since been lifted for newer editions, of which there have been several, and this latest incarnation of the book - now retitled Perfect Circle - brings the story to its natural conclusion with R.E.M.'s decision to disband in September, 2011. Discussing fame, fortune and sexuality with the same keen eye he casts on the group's astonishing musical catalogue, Perfect Circle is neither blind fan worship nor jaundiced critical cynicism, but a balanced and thorough telling of one of the most compelling rock stories of our time. Drawing on dozens of interviews with friends, associates and the band members themselves, this is not just the story of one group's rise through cult status, but the story of American rock.

Biographie de l'auteur

Tony Fletcher is the author of biographies on The Smiths, Echo & The Bunnymen, Keith Moon and more. A native of Britain who lives with his family in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, he first saw R.E.M. in concert in London in 1983; he last saw them in concert in New York in 2008 on their final tour. At R.E.M.'s request, he wrote the sleeve notes for the 1991 compilation The Best of R.E.M., and the 2008 Deluxe Edition of Reckoning. In 2007 he gave the keynote talk at 'R.E.M. In Perspective,' a symposium held in their Athens, Georgia hometown.

HASH(0x963de3a8) étoiles sur 5 Excellent R.E.M Story 9 juillet 2013

This book met and exceeded my expectations. The story of R.E.M expertly told and nicely written. Covers major milestones and discusses all sessions and resulting records. Focus is firmly on the band and its highs and lows and final graceful withdrawal. If you are a "music" fan wanting to know about these aspects of the band, this book is for you. If you are an "obsessed" fan and want to read about the private lives of the band's members, this book will not give you much.

HASH(0x963de5f4) étoiles sur 5 Excellent REM bio, comes full circle 20 août 2013

This is a very comprehensive bio of REM, who has been my favorite band for a long time. Fletcher is very detailed in his coverage of the band, but is critical when it's warranted. He also provides a lot of detail surrounding the business-side of music(record contracts, interactions with IRS and Warner Bros., etc.) which I found really interesting, though others might not. In general, Fletcher doesn't just gush as some biographers might.

This may be the only book that covers the bands ENTIRE career, from inception to retirement. I was glad that he decided to update it once more to cover the band's last few years. He also shares some great insights into the last album. The only thing he really leaves out is a detailed discussion of the band members side projects (such as Bill Berry's solo '45 in 1989). But I guess there's only so much room.

Bottom line: An absolute must-read for R.E.M. fans. I've read a few of the band's bios, and if you read only one, make it this one.

R.E.M. has always been one of my favorite bands. And while I've always kept up with the band through their albums and various magazine articles, I had a very limited view as to what was going on behind the scenes.

"Perfect Circle" gave me a look behind the curtain, examining their beginnings in a blossoming Athens music scene, chronicling their gradual rise to fame and subsequent superstardom, and going into detail about the difficulties the band had in following up on their late success. Author Tony Fletcher had unprecedented access to the band for this book, which is actually in its final iteration after multiple editions since 1989. The result, though, is a surprisingly honest look at the band and its successes and faults. It's the most balanced one can get with an authorized biography.

HASH(0x963de8ac) étoiles sur 5 Terrific book about a great band 21 juin 2013
Par Wendell Gee - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I've been a fan of R.E.M. for about thirty years, ever since my older cousin brought home a copy of the Chronic Town EP and played "Carnival of Sorts" over and over on his record player one summer. I loved the first edition of this book published in the late 1980s. This new, fully-updated 2013 edition covers the band from their earliest days in Athens, Ga., all the way up to their decision to part ways in 2011. It's a must read for anyone who loves the band and wants a greater understanding of their remarkable history. It really brings home how four young musicians in a small town created something very special, and managed to grow from a regional cult favorite into a worldwide phenomenon, while preserving their core values about music and innovation. My only complaint is that this edition is missing a lot of the wonderful photos that brought the first edition to life. In his introduction to this latest edition, the author suggests that he thought the photos made the earlier book look shallow, but I loved them. Either way, this new edition is a wonderful book about a great band, who I miss dearly, and I thank the author for returning to this story one more time, to complete the "perfect circle."

Lots of interesting stories and information. Occasionally bogs down in details about specific concerts and recording sessions. It's clear that the writer is very much a fan of R.E.M., both as a band and as people. Whether this is a good thing in terms of biography is up to the reader to decide. I would have liked a bit more perspective about R.E.M.'s legacy given the fact that popular music took a very different turn after their heyday in the late 80s/early 90s.
