Présentation de l'éditeur

For over three years Jacqueline Doherty has been watching her rock star son's messy descent into drug addiction. Every step of the way has been charted by a hungry media. And every step of the way has been agony for a loving mum. Pete Doherty's celebrity means that his addiction has become public property. But Jacqueline is a private person and her painful account is that of any mum - or any parent - trying to help a child in trouble. This is the compelling story of Pete's childhood, his burgeoning talent, his success as a musician and his drug addiction, set against the backdrop of his loving relationship with his mother and his family. It is a moving memoir of how a happy, middle-class family is coping with a family member opting to love drugs more than he loves them, or himself. It is a memoir that will offer hope to other mothers and families in a similar situation.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 He once said "To give up drugs would be like giving up a hand" 28 août 2014

A touching story by Pete Doherty's mother about how addiction affects ALL people in the patient's direct environment, but, in particular, the parents and siblings. What is very clear is that nobody can help the addict - only the addicted person himself can do that. As outsiders we are powerless. However, support is essential. Peter didn't live at home any more - so, at least the parents didn't have to deal with that. Peter was very talented and became quickly financially independent. The parents gave up reading the gossip and untrue stories about him because they hurt so much. Pete went through many rehabs but started using again after short periods of sobriety. He once said "To give up drugs would be like giving up a hand". He is still alive at 34 and may still be at Keith Richards age, who himself never became clean and sober...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Now I know where Peter got his gift for words from! 24 juillet 2010

Wow. This book really opened my eyes to what I thought I knew from reading about and loving the music/lyrics of Peter Doherty. I wish there was a way I could tell her directly how I am affected by their story. I know how having no control over your family being changed forever feels(not by addiction - but a sudden and ongoing medical illness to my hubby). Her words, like her sons (although a lot of them come from a sad place) somehow give me an unexplained extreme sense of calm. It is crystal clear to me now where he got his talent and depth from! My wish for their family is the same as it is for mine - I hope it is never too late to live happily ever after. I hope he realizes one day soon that life is short, we are only here for a visit - and his addictions are one day nothing but a bad memory for all of them. It all boils down to your family and loved ones. Everyone and everything else needs to come second to that.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 I read by chance, gave me a new perspective on life and what mothers have to go through (i'm a son!) 8 décembre 2014

I don't usually read books like this, I only did so because it was in the office kitchen and happened to be left on table, I started to browse it when I took a break from computer..next thing I just got absorbed into it.

I'm not a fan of Peter Doherty either, never really listened to his music, though I did see him at Glastonbury in 08/09 and laughed when he turned up and hour late on stage announcing: "It's not that I didn't know what time I was supposed it be on.. I just thought I was playing tomorrow" hilarious

Well I thought it was hilarious at the time, tho after reading this story, I see another perspective..

Paraphrase of the author: "when you see a rock star up on stage throwing up or so drunk/high he can't stand, I now think 'that young man has a mother somewhere'.."

In short: fascinating insight into the world of the mum. Being a male with currently no children [that I know of :) ], I'd never before even considered a mothers point of view on Pete Doherty or other celebrities.

I did learn a lot from life from reading this by hearing first hand the damage and strain on family that an addiction + combined with fame can bring. I also have much more respect for Peter after this too. I had no idea he was a great compassionate guy underneath and apparently quiet a smart fellow too. I just assumed from the press that he was a wanker.

Negative points: I found the Christian content slightly annoying , being an exChristian myself, however I totally appreciate how a personal faith got this lady through her ordeal and I respect that.

Actually I am now going to give this book as a Christmas present to a family member who is a mother and Christian, as I think she'll find it very uplifting.

In short: it is definitely worth a read, it's true reading can broaden your mind.. I'm glad I read it for the new perspectives on relationships I have gained. Perhaps it even has given me more understanding of my own mother.

Enjoy

P.s if you find my review helpful, please let me know, as I usually don't leave reviews, just on a small percentage of books I read.. I can leave a few more but it takes time, so only want to if it is of use to someone!
